Ewan McGregor joins Benedict Cumberbatch in new Meryl Streep movie
Ewan McGregor has signed up for the Hollywood adaptation of award-winning stage play August: Osage County. The high-profile movie has a cast that already includes Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin, Margo Martindale and Dermot Mulroney. Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch was linked to the film last month (August) and has now officially joined the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, McGregor will play the estranged husband of Roberts' character, with Streep appearing as his formidable mother-in-law. The film, based on a 2008 play by Tracy Letts, follows a dysfunctional family who are brought back to their childhood home by a crisis. August: Osage County, already mooted as a future Oscar contender, will begin shooting in Oklahoma later this month (September). The film is being directed by John Wells, best known for his work on ER and the US remake of Shameless, and counts George Clooney among its producers. Letts has written the screenplay from his own original Broadway script.
McGregor, 41, will next be seen in The Impossible, an action thriller based on one family's experiences during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which is scheduled for release later this year (2012). He recently completed work on fantasy blockbuster Jack The Giant Killer, due next March (2013).
