David Tennant news update: 'Rex' canned, 'Glorious 39' headed to the US + more

NBC did not pickup Rex is Not Your Lawyer for its upcoming fall season, so it's been scrapped.

In other news, David Tennant has been cast in Decoy Bride alongside Alice Eve and Kelly MacDonald. The project was announced at the Cannes Film Festival last Friday and is set to start shooting for 5 weeks this June. It will shoot on the Isle of Man and in Scotland.

The Decoy Bride tells the story of a superstar actress, Lara (Eve), who just wants to marry her cute British boyfriend James (Tennant), and believes the sleepy Scottish Island of Hegg is the one place the world’s press won’t find them. But when an ingenious paparazzo tracks them down, the diva must find a decoy bride and thinks local girl Katie (MacDonald) will be an ideal replacement. But when Katie meets James, sparks fly. Renewed hope for 'Rex Is Not Your Lawyer' + new 'Hamlet' clip

NBC delayed David Tennant's Rex is Not Your Lawyer back in January, but it looks like the show might still have a chance at being in the fall lineup. NBC needs between 5 to 7 new dramas for the upcoming season:

REX IS NOT YOUR LAWYER: This off-cycle pilot staged a comeback after being pronounced dead when the network didn’t pick it up for midseason. The legal drama’s producers did more work on the pilot they had originally rushed, including adding voiceover. The reworked pilot tested well, and the project has received an order for two back-up scripts. [Deadline via ONTD!]

MovieWeb unveiled a brand new exclusive clip from Hamlet featuring David Tennant. After it airs on PBS on April 28, the DVD and Blu-ray will debut on May 4 in the US.

NBC delays 'Rex is Not Your Lawyer'?

NBC had originally been hoping to get Rex Is Not Your Lawyer with David Tennant to air in one of its 10pm time slots in the spring to replace the Jay Leno Show. But according to one of Michael Ausiello's sources "The sets are coming down this week." The show, however will still be considered for the fall lineup. "The sets are on fold-and-hold," maintains the insider. "They will still be available if the show is picked up for the fall." This could be why David had to drop out of Burke and Hare:

Lots of David Tennant's fans believed that David missed the chance to play in the movie Burke and Hare due to Rex Is Not Your Lawyer being commissioned but it appears that it is because NBC has not yet made their decision so he is unable to commit to filming through until the end of March. David Tennant's 'Hamlet' to air in April in the US + update on 'Rex Is Not Your Lawyer'

The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2008 stage production of Hamlet will air on PBS' Great Performances series on Wednesday, April 28 2010 at 8pm EST. Hamlet originally aired in the UK on Boxing Day in 2009 with more than 900,000 viewers.

NBC so far has refused to confirm any pilot pickups but the network is expected to make announcements very soon. It seems likely that they will pick up hour-long pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer. They reportedly plan to order 10 drama pilots for next season to replace Jay Leno's 10pm talk show. Stay tuned.

David Tennant's LA Times interview + on set photos from 'Rex Is Not Your Lawyer'

David Tennant talked to Robert Lloyd about Doctor Who and NBC pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer. An excerpt to his interview is below:

And yet in some strange quantum mechanical way, he is also already not the Doctor, having filmed his last scenes some months back. And even as he is and is not the Doctor, he is (possibly) becoming someone else, the eponymous star of an NBC pilot called "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer," in which he plays an attorney who coaches clients to represent themselves after he begins suffering panic attacks.

We spoke by telephone on a recent rainy day in Los Angeles. ("I can understand it's a novelty here," he said, "but I watched the news last night and it sounded like the world was coming to an end.") Of "Rex," which also features Jane Curtin and Jeffrey Tambor, he would only say, because "I don't know how much I'm allowed to say," that "it's a great part. It's a very dramatic role, it's quite funny -- you get to do a bit of everything and that always appeals."

...Tennant will likely next be seen on American television when "Great Performances" airs the film of his "Hamlet," which he performed at Stratford in 2008 with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has performed with the company over the years, including as Romeo in 2000, but this was his first performance after becoming a pop-cultural action figure.

"On the opening night in Stratford, when outside my dressing room window the BBC News 24 truck pulled up, I realized that if I failed at this it was going to be on a fairly international level," he said. But the Times called his performance "riveting throughout," and the Guardian praised his Hamlet's "quicksilver intelligence, mimetic vigor and wild humor" -- qualities that describe his Doctor as well. David Tennant lands American TV pilot

David Tennant will make his American television debut as Rex Alexander in NBC pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer. The show focuses on Rex, a Chicago lawyer "who begins suffering panic attacks and takes up coaching clients to represent themselves in court."

The pilot was penned by Andrew Leeds and David Lampson. David Semel who directed the pilots for Heroes and Life will be directing. NBC greenlit the pilot in August after two years of development and months of searching for a lead actor "until Tennant came along and nailed the part."

The pilot reportedly began shooting in mid-October and hopefully it gets picked up by NBC.
