James McAvoy and Keira Knightley Empire Magazine outtakes

Back in April, Empire Magazine released a few photos of James McAvoy and Keira Knightley to celebrate the magazine's 20th Anniversary Edition in its June 2009 issue. There were posted a few days ago, but luckily someone over at IMDb was cool enough to point us to the outtakes of the photoshoot:

The 500 greatest movies of all time

Empire magazine brings us the 500 greatest movies of all time. Personally I think some of the choices are just either bad or very strange (Gremlins anyone?), some of Bogarts best films are not on, though thankfully the great Paul Newman's films show up quite a lot. Anyway here are the movies with Scottish actors they included:

449. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Ewan McGregor

442. Atonement - James McAvoy

432. X-Men 2 - Alan Cumming

376. Zodiac - Brian Cox

337. 300 - Gerard Butler

330. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - Ewan McGregor
320. Braveheart - Tommy Flanagan
211. Moulin Rouge! - Ewan McGregor
186. United 93 - Khalid Abdalla
151. Gladiator - Tommy Flanagan

130. The Man Who Would be King - Sean Connery

54. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Billy Boyd

34. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Billy Boyd

24. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Billy Boyd

Win an Atonement DVD

Along with a new Atonement DVD (out in the US March 18) you can also, oddly enough, win a brand new bicycle in the process. I found the Cinematical contest, by way of Awards Daily. Cinematical is asking for captions for the photo below - so go ahead, post a witty caption, and maybe one of you could win.

James McAvoy wins over Gerard Butler

James McAvoy beat fellow Scottish actor Gerard Butler at Sunday's Empire Awards in the Best Actor category for his role in Atonement. The film also won awards in the Best Actress (Keira Knightley) and in the Best British Film categories. According to Top News one million online users voted for the the epic film. For those of you who missed the show or do not live in the UK here is James McAvoy's acceptance speech from Empire Online:

"That was The Fratellis, they're from Scotland, they're from Glasgow I think and that was cool. I'm truly nervous. I really want to thank Working Title, you do good films and you make a lot of them and you make money with them sometimes, not all the time, you may not have made money with this one but you made it and that's because you believed in the film and Joe and us. Thank you very much for letting me be a part of that. Thanks to Paul Webster as well.

"Thank you Ruth, the best goddamn agent in town and I'd also like to thank Empire as well. I used to get it all the time as a kid, I still get it now if I'm being honest, not all the time, but sometimes.

"And this year's been an amazing for intelligent film, for good film, not just Transformers. What Empire has done is to tell people what to see and well done this year for getting people to see the good stuff and still saying the bad stuff is shit. And this is it, thanks very much."

I'll post more on the award ceremony soon.

James McAvoy is everywhere

It sure feels like that anyway. Penelope opens today in the UK and will open in the US at the end of the month, his Oscar nominated film Atonement will be released on HD DVD in the UK on March 10, 2008, and he was one of the winners of the 2008 Virtuosos Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. You can watch a video of James' red carpet interview at the Santa Barbara Film Festival below (his interview is second, after Casey Affleck's) :

Atonement goes for Oscar gold!

Atonement scored seven Oscar nominations this morning, and though Scottish actor, James McAvoy didn't get a nomination, one of his co-stars did. The film's seven nominations are for best supporting actress (Saoirse Ronan), art direction (Sarah Greenwood, Katie Spencer), cinematography (Seamus McGarvey), costume design (Jacqueline Durran), music (Dario Marianelli), adapted screenplay (Christopher Hampton), and best picture of the year (Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, ad Paul Webster - Focus Features).

The Kite Runner which stars Scottish actor Khalid Abdalla also scored a nomination for best music (Alberto Iglesias).

There the entire list of nominees can be found on the official Oscar website.

James McAvoy gives his first US interview right after his BAFTA nomination

What a week for James McAvoy and the makers of Atonement. The film may have been shut out of the major guild nominations (I'm looking at you SAG, WGA, DGA, and PGA), but after a Golden Globe win for best dramatic picture and a whopping 14 BAFTA nominations, the film is officially back in the Oscar race, where it belongs. James McAvoy is nominated in the best actor category for his role as Robbie Turner, and you can go here for a full list of all the nominees.

Will there be stars at the BAFTAS when the winners are announced Feb. 10? Probably, according to Hollywood Today, because there's no writer's strike to affect the British award show; but with the Oscars to follow two weeks later, many actors may not want to ignore the issues behind the writer's strike in the U.S. Nevertheless US viewers can catch the show on BBC America in February.

Here's an interview James McAvoy had today on Ryan Seacrest's radio show on 102.7 KIIS-FM. In it, James talks about his BAFTA nomination, Oscar buzz, and why he totally deserves even more love and adulation from his fans. Totally.

Atonement wins!

You probably know this already, but Atonement was announced as the Golden Globe winner for best picture (drama), and for best original score at a sadly, starless Golden Globe ceremony. James McAvoy didn't win, but I'm thrilled for the filmmakers and everyone involved with the film. Hopefully the rather dull show will force people to actually start negotiating again so that films can get made, TV can get less boring, and the Oscars can actually happen.

James and Keira grace the Oscar cover of EW

I've probably gone a little crazy with all the James McAvoy news this week, but with the Golden Globes on Sunday, and the Oscar nomination announcements in less than two weeks, it's almost impossible not to. Awards Daily posted the cover of this week's Entertainment Weekly, with James McAvoy and Keira Knightley looking very sexy. There's also a great interview with the two Atonement stars.

James McAvoy goes for the gold

According to TV Week, Golden Globe nominee James McAvoy will be featured in a one-on-one interview on Dateline NBC's special "Going for Gold." Matt Lauer hosts the special, which will air on Sun. Jan. 13 (7:00-9:00 p.m) directly before the Golden Globes. The actual ceremony has been changed to a news conference due to the ongoing writer's strike - it will be televised on NBC starting 9 p.m. ET Sunday.

For those of you who have not yet seen James in his award worthy role as Robbie Turner in Atonement, I highly recommend that you do. It's a powerful and haunting film and it's my favorite movie of 2007.

James McAvoy's Sunday Morning interview

I completely missed the fact that Atonement star James McAvoy would appear on Sunday Morning Shootout on AMC today; I've been missing the show for the past couple of months and I guess it serves me right. Luckily, there are two clips to watch below:

James McAvoy gets unscripted

I don't know how I missed this, but moviefone added James McAvoy's Unscripted interview with his Atonement co-star Keira Knightley a few days ago. Check it out here if you missed it. James is pretty funny in it. Don't forget to visit www.moviefone.com/unscripted from time to time to see stars interview each other.

New smokin' hot pics of James McAvoy in Wanted

The world may have gone a bit Atonement crazy, but there are brand new pictures of James McAvoy and other cast members from the action movie, Wanted, on imdb. You can view them in their glorious entirety here.

For those of you who are Atonement crazy, the Golden Globe nominated film opens in wider release in the US today. There are also reports that the film will open even wider on January 4 so if you live in a smaller town there may be a bit of a wait for you. Hopefully news that the film grossed $1.13 million in just six days in the US, according to http://www.boxofficemojo.com/, may ease the pain. If you are lucky enough to have seen the film you can post a review of what you think of it.

Can't wait that long to see if James McAvoy is honored for his work in Atonement? I can't either. To ease the pain you can watch the clip with Atonement's brilliant score by Dario Marianelli who will hopefully be honored with a Golden Globe nomination as well.
