Alan Cumming dares do all in 'Macbeth' on Broadway
The actor tackles 15 roles from the Shakespearean tragedy along with a mental patient in a story that frames the performance. He finds it 'terrifying' but relishes the chance to try something that's never been tried before.

Manhattan, NY.
(Jennifer S. Altman, For The Times / April 14, 2013)
Like world-class athletes, actors often measure their achievements by
the degree of difficulty. Does a part require an unusual amount of
range? An extraordinary number of man hours? Is it simply a matter of a
chewy set of lines to get one's lips around?
By all these standards, Alan Cumming would be an extreme-sports medalist.
In a stage turn that will last nearly two hours, Cumming is set to
play the part of Macbeth. Or, rather, the parts of Macbeth, as he
tackles 15 roles from the Shakespearean tragedy, including the title
character, Banquo, Duncan, Lady Macbeth and plenty of others (as well
as, in a story that frames the performance, a disoriented mental patient
reenacting the play).

Alan Cumming -> Quoted
The celebrated actor talks about preparing for his one-man production of Macbeth.
After sold-out engagements at the National Theatre of Scotland and
Lincoln Center Festival, Alan Cumming is bringing his dark, one-man
production of Macbeth to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre for a limited
engagement, opening April 21. Cumming says that even though he was drawn
to the idea of a new production, he still finds performing the show
somewhat daunting.
“I’m really excited to do it again. I feel like I wasn’t done with
it… It’s the most challenging and most overwhelming thing I’ve ever done
in my entire life,” says Cumming.Read more at Next Magazine

Doctor Faustus
Glasgow South & Eastwood Extra's review of Siobhan Redmond's Doctor Faustus is here.
50 Shades author in legal row over Glasgow comedy send-up
Leah MacRae stars as Maggie, who meets the man of her dreams in a Glasgow Job Centre
Robert C. Kelly is set to stage Fifty Shades of Maggie, described as
'a hysterical send-up' of EL James' story of college graduate
Anastasia's S&M affair with business magnate, Christian Grey.
The storyline switches to Glasgow, where Maggie, a young lady meets
the man of her dreams in the Job Centre office at her Back-to-Work
interview.
But rather than being erotic, Fifty Shades of Maggie, starring Gary:
Tank Commander's Leah MacRae, pokes fun at the S&M fantasy world.
And it laughs at the very notion of padlocks and chains claiming:
"Any right-minded Glasga burd that's intae being dominated by a bloke
needs locking up."

First Look at Alan Cumming in MACBETH on Broadway!
Now in previews at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre, Tony and Olivier Award winner and two-time Emmy nominee Alan Cumming's acclaimed one-man interpretation of Macbeth is set to officially open next Sunday, April 21 at 6 p.m.

The Tony-winner and Emmy-nominee's role as slick campaign manager Eli
Gold on "The Good Wife" continues to be meaty, with the series recently
picked up for a fifth season. He's set to star in a one-man "Macbeth"
that opens on Broadway later this month (more on that shortly). And now
he has several film projects in the works.
Cumming tells The Times that
he's come aboard to star in "First-Class Man," the long-developed Roger
Spottiswoode film about an Indian prodigy who makes the move from his
native country to Cambridge, England. (Cumming quipped he'll be playing
the Indian boy, though given his "Macbeth" turn—he’s playing 15
different parts, including Lady Macbeth -- we wouldn’t be so sure he’s
joking.)
Meanwhile, Cumming says he’s on board to start in the wartime Dutch
drama “Dunes of Overveen,” an indie project co-written by gay activist
David Mixner and the British expat writer Richard Grant, with the
project seeking a director.

Business has been slow since a nuclear naval base opened in
the Scottish seaside town where Helen (Blythe Duff) manages a small
hotel, and so she is surprised when a stranger (Andrew Scott-Ramsay)
wants to rent a room. She’s even more surprised, though, when the young
man turns out to be one of the four navy brats who brutalized her son at
a rally protesting nuclear weapons years before. David Harrower’s
fifty-five-minute drama, directed by George Perrin (part of “Brits Off
Broadway”), is a study in how two people with reason to hate each other
might, after years apart, not only see each other anew but develop a
particularly strong bond. But the short piece, though polished, feels
more like a sketch than a fleshed-out play.
Previews begin March 27, opens April 3, closes April 21

Siobhan Redmond reveals the Faustian pact that saw her delay getting her MBE from the Queen in order to star on stage
Scots star prepares to head home for a Citizens production of Doctor Faustus – once she finally collects her gong from Buckingham Palace.
Siobhan is excited to be on Citizens stage
Actress Siobhan Redmond has told how her trip to Buck House has been postponed because she’s having a devil of a time on stage.
Starring
in Doctor Faustus forced the actress to delay her royal appointment to
get her MBE – awarded in the New Year’s Honours list.
It is
somehow fitting. The last time Christopher Marlowe’s 16th century
classic played at Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre, in 1965, it caused a
headline-grabbing rumpus over its depiction of the Queen.
Siobhan,
53, said: “I have not actually been to the Palace yet because the
scheduled date was the morning after the press night of Doctor Faustus
in Leeds and I knew I wouldn’t be able to do that. I have been pencilled
in for May.
“Fortunately, they have been very helpful and
accommodating. I think they realise the rogues and vagabonds who work
freelance may not be able to come on the first date so they gave me a
choice of subsequent dates.
“I was talking to my sister about this
as we went through, yet again, what on earth we are going to wear, hats
not featuring largely in her wardrobe and formal wear not featuring
largely in mine.
“The thought that somebody other than myself
might have enjoyed my work is completely delightful. I am not going to
pretend to be cool about it.
"I am genuinely touched but, of course, it doesn’t make any difference as to whether or not I am ever likely to work again.”
But worrying where her next job will come from is not an immediate concern.
In
the first place, there is her imminent return to her home town of
Glasgow with the Citizens production of Doctor Faustus. And later this
year, she will be reprising the role of Lady Macbeth in the National
Theatre of Scotland’s production of Dunsinane, David Greig’s acclaimed
sequel to Shakespeare’s Scottish play.
She is particularly
excited about bringing Christopher Marlowe’s mythic tale about the
dangers of making bargains with the Devil to the Citz. Partly because
she is playing the role of Mephistopheles, which is highly unusual for
an actress, but also because it has finally brought her into the fold at
the Citizens Theatre.

Series 14 - 213. Tea for Three
From Radio Times:
Siobhan Redmond guest-stars as a slightly scatty woman who gets stuck
in the hospital lift with Jimmi. After Carrie’s young son — also called
Jimmi — died during an operation, she marks the precise anniversary
with a picnic at the hospital. But while she’s used rituals and signs to
help her cope with the grief, she says her husband, a once calm and
quiet cellist, became a live-for-today “wild child”. But her colleague
Reggie (Adrian Hood) later reveals something about her that alarms
Jimmi.
Meanwhile, Emma presents her version of Sam’s last
moments to the police but her colleagues at the Mill — and specifically
Howard — doubt her story.
About this programme
213/221. Jimmi becomes trapped in a lift with a woman who has relied
on a strong belief in fate to cope with the death of her son, but which
has also prevented her moving on from her grief. Meanwhile, Emma relays
her version of Sam's final moments to colleagues and DI Collier, while
Daniel tries to win back Zara.
Stephen McCole as Lord Elgin, one of three roles he plays in Black Watch
Debates over the Iraq war have raged now for 10 years, and don't looking like stopping any time soon.
The award-winning Black Watch, returning to Glasgow's SECC, moves
beyond the politics, to look at the true story of the Scottish boys on
the frontline and the history of their now disbanded regiment.
The latest production of the award-winning drama opens next Thursday,
and Glasgow actor Stephen McCole, who plays three parts, including
First Minister Alex Salmond, said the cast were looking forward to
bringing the show home to Scotland.
He said: "It is definitely more nervous performing at home.
"A lot of the boys have done it in the SECC before and they are like,
'it is crazy, the Scottish audiences really get behind it, they are
there with you every second of the way'. It also means the boys get to
do it in a really strong Scottish accent.
"I don't get to do a strong Scottish accent at any point, unless you count Alex Salmond, which is not really that strong.
"I'm looking forward to doing it at home, it is nerve-racking but it should be great, it should be fun."
