One of Kevin's most beloved charities is Save the Children, an organization devoted to — you guessed it! — helping children in need. He's supported the charity for years, and even donated the proceeds from his folk album to it.
Now, he's hosting a charity auction that his fans can take part in!
Now through Monday, February 25, you can bid on items ranging from message cards to keychains to photo frames on eBay. They're all hand crafted items from The Scrappy Tree, and each one is signed by Kevin himself. As of now, it looks like most items are in the $10-20 range.
The proceeds will go to Save the Children's international emergency response campaigns. According to Kevin's website,
the funds will help "recovery and life saving support efforts involving
USA Hurricane Sandy, Philippine flooding, South Sudan shelter aid,
African food and hunger crises, and Haiti earthquake relief, to name a
few."
Swingcats find purr-fect way to help out their canine friends
Scottish girl group enlist stars to help make video to raise money for The Dogs Trust.
A Scottish group called the Swingcats are raising cash for dogs.
All profits of the trio’s new single The One are being donated to The Dogs Trust.
And they persuaded dog-lovers John Barrowman, Lord of the Rings star
Billy Boyd and Still Game’s Paul Riley to star in the video.
The song was inspired by singer Alyson Orr’s dog Angus, who died a month ago.
Alyson said: “Angus was a second-hand dog and I wanted to give something
back. Many dogs need loving new homes – often after suffering terrible
cruelty.”
Once the Swingcats – Alyson, Laura Ellis and Nicola Auld – had finished the song they pulled in some favours to make the video.
Alyson added: “I knew John was a big supporter of the Dogs Trust so when
he was in Glasgow doing panto I asked if he’d be willing to help and he
gave up his time in between shows.
“Billy is a friend of mine and I also wanted someone to play a traffic warden and asked Paul, who said yes.”

'Merlin' star Richard Wilson in call for autism workplace support
The One Foot In The Grave actor wants people with the condition to be helped into employment after it was revealed only 15 per cent of those with autism are in full-time employment.
Richard Wilson delivered copies of the report to MSP Mark MacDonald
Actor Richard Wilson has called for people with autism to be given greater support to enter the world of work.
The star of Merlin and One Foot In The Grave made the demand as it
was revealed that only around one in six people with the condition (15%)
are in full-time employment.
Wilson is an ambassador for National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland,
which says large numbers of people on the autism spectrum have
university degrees but are given only part-time or low-paid jobs.
Campaigners want to raise awareness among employers of the benefits
people with autism can typically bring to a workplace, such as attention
to detail and an ability to cope well with routine.
Speaking outside the Scottish Parliament, Wilson said: "A lot of
people are telling me that they're not getting any support, especially
in the realm of employment. Because communication is one of the problems
for autistic people, very often the workplace doesn't understand
autism, doesn't recognise it.
"A lot of autistic people could work very happily if they were given
the right circumstances and the right job. Very often they've got
special skills. It would be a real help if employers could understand it
better."
The actor spoke as he launched a report compiled by the charity,
containing recommendations to improve the lives of the 50,000 people in
Scotland who have autism.

Alan Cumming Has Never Been Better
The story of Any Day Now may take place in the past, but the discrimination against same-sex families it depicts is unfortunately still all too real.
Cumming (right) and Dillahunt prepare for battle.
George Arthur Bloom lived in Brooklyn in the late 1970s,
back when it was a rough-and-tumble area. He was inspired by a
larger-than-life character everyone seemed to know, Rudy, who developed a
fatherly relationship with, as filmmaker Travis Fine puts it, a “kid
who was terribly handicapped, both mentally and physically” and whose
mother was a drug addict. Bloom turned Rudy’s real-life experience into a
screenplay, which almost got filmed several times during the ensuing
years (at one point Tommy Lee Jones and Sylvester Stallone were attached
to it). Then it went nowhere, Bloom gave up, and it sat in a drawer
until his son, an old high school friend of Fine’s, showed the director
the script.
The movie that came of it, Any Day Now, which hit theaters this winter and garnered awards on the festival circuit, follows The Good Wife’s Alan Cumming as Rudy, Raising Hope’s
Garret Dillahunt as Paul, the closeted attorney who becomes his
partner, and Isaac Leyva as Marco, a teen with Down syndrome who’s
abandoned by his mother and taken in by the men. They all must fight a
biased legal system so the couple can adopt Isaac, a heart-wrenching
storyline that will resonate with many of the 2 to 6 million LGBT people
who say they’d like to adopt.
“The story of Any Day Now
may take place in the past, but the discrimination against same-sex
families it depicts is unfortunately still all too real in some parts of
our country,” says GLAAD president Herndon Graddick.
It’s real too for kids like Marco. As of 2011 there were 104,236
children in foster care awaiting adoption, many of them considered
special-needs children because they are black or Latino, are older than
infants, or have some form of mental or physical disability. “What the
film’s remarkable performances and eloquent script reveal, though, is
how unjust and hurtful to same-sex couples and children that
discrimination really is,” Graddick adds.
Cumming, whose performance is riveting and one of his most inspired, talks about making the film.
I found Any Day Now
just completely absorbing and really moving. And I notice people just
seem to really have a gut reaction to the film. Why do you think it
reaches people that way?
I think that we see the story of
people who are damaged and devastated by bigotry and prejudice and
ignorance. And we understand how wrong that is because we’ve invested in
these characters and we want them to be together. And then I think in a
larger way, we know that the reason that happened is because that
bigotry and that prejudice still exist in our society. And I think we
are so moved by it because we know that we are complicit in that because
we are all members of that society.
This is a story
about many things — about family, the foster care system, and coming
out, but at the heart of it, it’s a love story between your
free-spirited Rudy and Garret’s buttoned-down, closeted Paul. How did
you develop the sort of chemistry that viewers see between you and
Garret on-screen?
We just had to fake it, because we didn’t
know each other. It was very well-written. and obviously Garret is a
really brilliant actor and we luckily felt very comfortable with each
other and got on. And I think that’s half of it. Once you feel
comfortable with someone you can just dive in. But you’d imagine we’d
have lots of time to talk and get comfortable with each other. No, we
were practically in bed on the first day.
One of the
other parts of the film that we don’t see a lot of — but is so true — is
that there’s so much difficulty over same-sex couples trying to adopt.
But the reality is there are a ton of children and teenagers, especially
with physical or mental disabilities, that will just languish in the
system.
Absolutely right. And that to me is the biggest
idea—because everyone falls in love with Isaac. Garret says at one
point, “I’m just hoping that this child doesn’t slip through the cracks
in the system,” and sadly he does.
Tell me about working with Isaac.
Oh,
it was great. I loved it. I mean people think…you’re going to make a
movie with someone who has a learning disability, what’s that going to
mean? I had no idea. But I just went into it…with an open heart. And he
was just an absolute darling and so lovely.… He’s got kind of openness
to him and…he’s not at all jaded. Everything there’s pure, and it kind
of reminded me of what acting should be like. Everything’s really on the
surface and completely authentic.
What’s the most critical thing for you to get across with this film? What do you want people to take away from it?
I want people to…have a real emotional experience and an emotional connection. But really…I want people to go away and think, Wow,
look at the effect of prejudice and ignorance and bigotry, and look at
how much our society is still engendering and encouraging that.
Speaking
of, you and your husband, Grant, got married earlier this year in New
York. What are your thoughts on the recent marriage equality successes?
I
think it’s great that we have a president who is very vocal in his
support of equality and gay rights. I think the last election is really
exciting in that it showed that the country was rejecting all that sort
of prejudice and fear-based prejudice. We’re still the second-class
citizens. And people still can be fired for being gay and people are
gay-bashed.… So, you know, I don’t mean to be ungrateful but I don’t see
why I should be so grateful for my rights. I think that’s what we
should all remember.

Ewan McGregor backs disabled schoolboy’s Christmas song
A disabled schoolboy has won the admiration of Hollywood actor Ewan
McGregor – after blinking the words to a charity Christmas single.
Adam Bojelian has cerebral palsy, is blind, and suffers from a severe seizure disorder.
But the 12-year-old is able to communicate with friends and family by
blinking and used his amazing skill to pen the song which will now help
the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).
McGregor, a supporter of the charity, was bowled over when he heard
Christmas Gibbons, saying: “It’s quite incredible to think that Adam
shares his vivid imagination with is through poetry written by blinking.
“I love the idea that Santa is assisted at Christmas by gibbons! I
hope lots of people will download this track and help raise money for
CHAS.”
The actor added: “Adam has already won the 2010 Brit Writers
Outstanding Achievement Award, a gold Blue Peter badge, the 2011 Young
Scotland Rising Star Award and the 2012 Young Scots Arts Award for his
poetry.”
Adam, from Edinburgh, wrote the words to the song two years ago. It
reveals how Santa is able to deliver so many present in one night,
concluding with the lines: “You thought the reindeers did this job/
Now you know it is the gibbons.”
Thanks to a chance meeting it has now been set to music, recorded, and is ready for downloading from iTunes.
His mother, Zoe, said: “Adam was asked by staff at Rachel House,
which is run by CHAS, if there was a particular dream he would like to
have come true and he said he would love to see Christmas Gibbons set to
music.”
The 52-year-old added: “Unfortunately, not long after that he became
very ill again and had to go back into hospital, so the project stalled.
“Then one day my husband and I ran into Gary and Kim Harrison, who we
had become friendly with after meeting while out walking our dogs.”
Zoe mentioned the project and Gary said he knew somebody that could help Adam with his dream.
Mr Harrison said: “My son, Tom, who lives in LA, is a composer and often does work on films and TV shows like CSI.
“I knew he would be only too happy to help out. Adam is such an
amazing boy and it’s fantastic that he’s so determined to give something
back to the charity that’s helped his family.”
Mr Harrison also asked for help from Jess Connell and Nicky Godley to create a video.
In 2011, Nicky was awarded the Intercom Gold Plaque at the Chicago Film Festival for her piece, Mikey and Jools Keep Safe.
Roslyn Neely, director of fundraising and communications at CHAS,
said: “It’s a super song and we are really proud of Adam’s great
achievement and the fact that his family want to raise money for CHAS.”
Fifty pence from each download of the single is going to charity.

Star James McAvoy's supporting role for Manchester charity helping street children Actor James McAvoy is supporting a charity appeal to raise funds to improve the lives of African street children James McAvoy was so shocked when he witnessed the real-life
drama faced by street children in Africa that he is now supporting a
Manchester-charity fighting to improve the lives of youngsters.
The star first became aware of the heartbreaking struggle of
thousands of children, who wake up in plastic bags, drains or rubbish
dumps every day with little chance of finding food, when he starred in
Last King of Scotland which was filmed in Uganda in 2006.
McAvoy was so touched by his experience that he became a
passionate supporter of Retrak, which helps to provide homes for street
children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.
McAvoy shot to fame when he appeared in the TV series Shameless.
He fell in love with his co-star Anne-Marie Duff and the couple have
since married and had a son. The actor took time out from shooting his
next film Trance, a drama thriller directed by Radcliffe’s Danny Boyle,
to urge support for Retrak’s ZERO Appeal which runs until December 5. He
said: "No human being, never mind a child, should wake up in the
morning not knowing how they’ll get through the day.
"The street restricts these children’s access to food, water,
shelter and denies them love and instead offers neglect, exploitation
and abuse in abundance.
"That’s why I support Retrak’s call for a world where no child is forced to live on the streets."
