Joanna Vanderham: Motilo magazine article

Fresh Faces: Joanna Vanderham (Motilo Magazine)
The latest addition to our pretty impressive Fresh Face line-up is the daintily beautiful Joanna Vanderham. This actress may have a Dutch name, but she is actually from Perth, Scotland, and her acting career is about to make the move from national to international sphere.

After attending and graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with a distinguished back-catalogue of stage performances and TV bit-parts, she landed herself a life changing role in Sky’s TV adaptation of Martina Cole’s gritty crime drama, The Runaway. In it, Vanderham played Cathy, the central female character who murders one of her prostitute mother’s friends in order to try and escape her miserable life. Her love interest was the steamy Skins actor Jack O’Connell, and a key friend was played by Alan Cumming as a transvestite, Desrae. It was a surprisingly dark debut, an East End epic filled with violence and graphic sex.

Vanderham followed her stellar reviews with slightly lighter projects, such as Young James Herriot, a study of the Scottish vet, and Dancing on the Edge, about an all-black jazz band trying to make it in the world of 1930′s aristocracy.
The two projects that have gained her recognition throughout the UK have been her role in the fourth series of Above Suspicion, named Silent Scream. Vanderham plays the victim of brutal murder: a world-famous actress and centre of tabloid gossip, Amanda Delaney. Following this, she was the focus of The Paradise, a gorgeous BBC costume drama telling the tale of an eponymous 1870′s Department store, its sexy owner, and new girl Denise (Vanderham) who has a penchant for retail.

She also appeared in her first feature length film this year, with an all-star cast of Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan and Alexander Skarsgård, What Maisie Knew. It retells Henry James’ novel in modern New York settings, with Coogan and Moore playing a bitterly divorcing couple using their young daughter as a means of manipulation. Skarsgård and Vanderham play the couple’s new partners.

When it comes to style, we’ve seen Vanderham in pretty much everything during the last 12 months. As a mere 20 year old actress, she is still somewhat of a blank canvas. Last August she appeared at a screening of The Debt wearing a tiny micro-dress and shoe-boot combination that not many people could get away with. In The Paradise she swans around in 19th century dresses looking picture perfect, and in What Maisie Knew she channels that New York mix-and-match look of urban ease and effortless style. The question is, which look suits her best?

Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, David Tennant among Glamour.com's most stylish Brits

Glamour UK polled 25,000 people and Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, and David Tennant were included on the list of Best Dressed British Men.

No 24: David Tennant

His Style: David Tennant’s presence on this list needs little explanation – he has already bagged the title of Scotland’s Most Stylist Man thanks to the scruffy Converse/English Tweed combo that he works so well.

No 10: Ewan McGregor

His Style: A generation of teenagers tried to emulate Ewan’s Trainspotting street grunge in the 90s. Thank god those days are over! Now you’re more likely to find the star in riding leather, designer jeans and, occasionally, a kilt.

No 2: Gerard Butler

His Style: This cheeky Scot boasts a “devil-may-care” attitude when it comes to fashion. "It's amazing how much time and effort it takes for me to look rumpled," he says. Yes but, boy, does he look good.

People's Most Beautiful includes Kevin McKidd

People Magazine has revealed a sneak peak at its Most Beautiful 2010 issue - which should be on newsstands now. Lovely photo with Kevin McKidd via ONTD!

"On Grey's Anatomy, you have to have make-out scenes – and it's probably best that you don't have a beer gut," says McKidd, 36, of keeping up with the McDreamys of the ER. "So I'm definitely conscious of exercise. But I like to have a Scotch at night. I'm Scottish so I'm not quite as strict."

Gerard Butler graces the cover of Architectural Digest

Gerry is on the May 2010 issue of Architectural Digest and you can find the entire cover story in the issue which is on newsstands now.
Thirteen-foot-tall mahogany doors with a knocker that could summon the dead. A ceiling fresco depicting the rape of Ganymede. Plaster walls chipped and mottled with age, massive columns supporting limestone lions, crystal chandeliers casting spidery shadows…. Medieval castle? Ancestral manor house? Try a two-story loft in the heart of New York’s ultratrendy Chelsea district. The doors alone are remarkable enough to stop the most jaded Manhattanite in his tracks: Who in the world lives here?

Why, King Leonidas of Sparta, who else? The place starts to make a little more sense when one considers that its owner is the actor Gerard Butler, and Gerard Butler is known for channeling such larger-than-life figures as the Spartan king, Attila the Hun, Dracula, the Phantom of the Opera and Beowulf. “I wanted something elegant and gorgeous and at the same time rather masculine and raw,” the actor declares, his Glasgow burr somehow enhancing the description. “I guess I would describe the apartment as bohemian old-world rustic château with a taste of baroque.” [Peter Haldeman]

James McAvoy nominated for Olivier award & on the cover of Nylon Magazine

James has been nominated for a Laurence Olivier theatre award in the best actor category for Three Days of Rain at the Apollo theatre. James is nominated with James Earl Jones, Mark Rylance, Ken Stott, Jude Law, and Samuel West. Winners will be announced in London on March 21.

James is featured in the March 2010 issue of Nylon Guys.

Here's an excerpt from the interview:
GREAT SCOT!
James McAvoy: A very different kind of movie star.

Though he’s shared the screen with Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley, and Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy is in no rush to be the next big name.

Stephanie Trong found out firsthand while spending a chilly evening in New York City with the Scottish actor. Here, a few of his secrets.

Why you never hear about him in the tabloids:
“I’ve only had somebody try and take pictures of me outside my house once in my entire life. And they stopped after about half an hour.”

How his resume is impeccable:
“Every now and again, [my agents] thought that I should do something, and I’ve been, ‘What the fuck are you thinking?’ But that’s only happened once or twice in my entire career.”

The co-star that left the biggest impression on him:
“I was intimidated by the humongity—this is a good made-up word—the humongity of Keira’s sort of world presence.”

Why it’s only a matter of time until he wins an Oscar:
“I was very sensitive. Cried easy. Enjoyed crying from an early age. Ehm, not in public. On my own. I think I recognized its therapeutic qualities early on. And then as I came into my teenage years it became very handy ‘cause I could wallow about my lack of girlfriend or general cool or mystique.” [Nylon Magazine]

You can get a look at the rest of the photos and the entire interview over at ONTD!

Outtakes from the Nylon photo shoot are posted below:
