Sundance Film Festival video
Kenneth Cole creates Sundance video starring Alan Cumming, Rachel Dratch, and Ed Burns
While celebrities and movie insiders are attending the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, AWEARNESS, The Kenneth Cole Foundation, is reminding event-goers to thank the festival's volunteers via this short starring Alan Cumming, Rachel Dratch, and Ed Burns. The funny flick, Heroes Don't Wear Capes, debuts today on Volunteer Appreciation Day and will be screened at Sundance theaters or through a QR code that can be accessed via mobile devices.

The vignette is a follow-up to last year's film, which featured Derek Waters, the leader of a volunteer crew that helps Cumming, Dratch, and Burns solve their individual Sundance dilemmas. "I need something that says 'casual cool,' but still says, 'I'm famous bitches,'" Dratch hilariously delivers of her outfit choice crisis.

"The Sundance Film Festival is not possible without the hard work and support of the dedicated volunteers," said Kenneth Cole. "Our vignette is intended to be a small tribute that aims to celebrate all they do to make the festival a success."

Peter Mullan: 'The Fear' reviews & interviews, 'Top of the Lake' premiere

Top of the Lake
Jane Campion’s alternative TV miniseries heads to Sundance
The main event at January’s Sundance Film Festival may turn out not to be a movie at all, but Jane Campion’s six-part miniseries, “Top of the Lake.” Starring Elisabeth Moss and the Scottish actor Peter Mullan, the layered drama will screen just once in Park City, on Sunday, January 20, prior to airing on the Sundance Channel, which co-produced it with the BBC.
Working on separate episodes, Campion shared the directing duties with Garth Davis. The series, co-written by Campion and Gerard Lee, has been blurbed as follows: “’Top of the Lake’ is a powerful and haunting mystery about the search for happiness in a paradise where honest work is hard to find. Set in the remote mountains of New Zealand, the story follows the disappearance of a twelve-year-old, five-months pregnant, who was last seen standing chest deep in a frozen lake.
“Robin Griffin [Moss] is a gutsy but inexperienced detective called in to investigate [the girl’s] case. During the investigation, she collides with Matt Mitcham [Mullan], the missing girl’s father and local drug lord. Robin will find this the case that tests her limits and sends her on a journey of self-discovery.”
Holly Hunter (Campion’s “The Piano”), David Wenham (“The Lord of the Rings”) co-star. Lucy Lawless (“Xena,” “Spartacus”) appears in the first episode. It was photographed by Adam Arkapaw (the upcoming “Lore”).
What sounds on the surface a less perverse “Twin Peaks,” or a mystical “CSI,” is likely to require trenchant feminist analysis given the involvement of Campion, director of “An Angel at My Table,” “The Portrait of a Lady,” and “In the Cut,” as well as “The Piano.”
During an onstage interview at the Cannes TV market Mipcom in October, the Australian auteur noted that the series is thematically interested in “post-menopausal” over-40 women. As the Hollywood Reporter recorded it, “they are a ‘fascinating’ subset that no one is typically interested in dwelling on, she explained. The women are a self-contained counterpoint to the patriarchal structure surrounding them, and Holly Hunter is the central figure in their encampment.”
“We’re trying to go against the police procedural aesthetic,” co-writer Lee added. Campion said she was inspired to choose the long-form TV format after watching “Deadwood,” “Mad Men” (in which Moss plays Peggy Olson), and “The Killing.” She and Lee “determined there was ‘more freedom’ and ‘fewer restraints’ imposed upon creators nowadays in TV than in film.” The chorus agreeing with her on this — and television drama’s current supremacy over film drama — has grown exponentially in 2012.

'California Solo' to première at Sundance

In Marshall Lewy's film California Solo, Scottish actor Robert Carlyle, known for his roles in Trainspotting and the James Bond action flick The World Is Not Enough, let's his hair grow out and plays an ageing Britpop musician who lives in the U.S.

When he is arrested for drunk driving and faces deportation, Carlyle's character must face his past and come to terms with his inner demons.

The idea of using a Scottish character, instead of an illegal alien to examine the immigration and deportation topic was a different twist that really stemmed from Lewy's love for Britpop music that hit its stride in the mid- to late- 1990s.

"Britpop was a movement that I loved in college," Lewy said to The Park Record during a telephone interview from Los Angeles, Calif. "I went to visit some friends in Ireland and I returned with a lot of music that hadn't made it to the U.S., at that time."

Bands such as Oasis, Blur, Supergrass, Echobelly and Shed Seven are a few examples of the genre, which was influenced by the music that emerged from Manchester, England, in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

"When it came time to write the script, I thought about how old Robert Carlyle's character would have been during the movement's heyday in the early to mid 1990s," Lewy said. "That took me back to the music that I loved and I just started listening to it again while I wrote the script."

Lewy was again drawn to the emotional and anthemic quality Britpop.

"I felt the character was like the music, which has this epic and intimate quality going on at the same time," he said. "In fact, that's how the character sees himself."

Although Lewy had never met Carlyle before, he had him in mind when crafting the characteristics.

"I didn't know him and I didn't know I could get him, so I had a back-up plan because there are so many great actors from Scotland or Ireland that I could get, but he was the one I wanted," Lewy said. "So, even though the character was not like me, I was able to write in a voice that was able to capture him because I knew the characters he plays in his films."

In California Solo, Carlyle plays Lachlan MacAldonich, a man who can become his own worst enemy.

"I know many people who have trouble getting out of their own way," Lewy said. "They have settled into this comfortably numb state over the years and aren't able to just sit tight in that space. The events of the film rock Lachlan out of that and force him to deal with his demons."

When Carlyle did sign on, he was able to bring a lot of that quality and a history of Britpop culture to the character, because he hung out with a lot of those musicians at that time, Lewy said.

"Robert arrived in Los Angeles for the shoot and had a lot of the clothes he used to wear to the Hacienda, which is like the Studio 54 of Manchester," he said. "He wore those in the film and buttoned the top button up to the neck, which was the image back then."

Furthermore, Carlyle has appeared in an Oasis music video and is good friends with the now-defunct band's founders Noel and Liam Gallagher.

"He also knows Paul Weller, who is known as the "Modfather" and the leader of the band the Jam," Lewy explained. "In fact, Robert wears a bracelet throughout the film that was given to him by Paul."

Those little details made brought MacAldonich to life for the shoot, which, when stripped down, could have become just another film about the United States immigration dilemma.

"Obviously, a lot of the stories we hear about immigration are focused on Latin-American families or Arab families," Lewy said. "In fact, there is a line in the film where Robert's boss, who is of Mexican descent says, 'I have all these Mexicans working on my farm and it's the Scottish guy that gets into trouble with immigration.'

Although Lewy found irony in basis of the film, he talked to an immigration lawyer as part of his research.

"The lawyer walked me through what can happen to someone even if they have a Green Card and is a permanent legal resident of the U.S. who has lived here for years," he said. "They can still be deported, or as they say, now, removed, for something like a DUI, even if they have grandchildren here.

"The more I learned, the more I realized it would be a good basis for the spine of the film," he said.

Lewy shot California Solo last summer in 20 days.

"We filmed around the areas where I live in Los Angeles," he said. "It was fun, and the reason I had such a good experience with his film is that I saw what I have learned from the past. I found collaborators and when I worked with them, I knew we were making the same movie."

Lewy was able to set a tone to the movie and then let his collaborators loose to do their work.

"Directors come in all types," he said. "There are the Clint Eastwoods who are very hands off and there are the David Finchers and Stanley Kubricks who are known to be extreme micro managers.

"I try to do it with a loose hand to allow for improv and be open to other people's ideas, while still getting the movie that I want," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how people react to the film, starting with Sundance. I haven't watched it with an audience, yet. So it will be interesting to hear what they will have to say."

California Solo is one of the premières at the Sundance Film Festival. It will screen on
Wednesday, Jan. 25, 9:45 p.m., Eccles Theatre, PC
Thursday, Jan. 26, 8:30 a.m., the MARC, PC

Ewan McGregor update: talk show cancellations + 2011 Sundance lineup

Ewan McGregor had been rescheduled to be on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson this Friday (December 3) to promote I Love You Phillip Morris after his original appearance was canceled. Unfortunately it looks like this rescheduled appearance has been canceled too. He wasn't on today's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show either. Ewan was reportedly trapped in Thailand last week because of monsoons, so that could be the reason for the cancellations. I hope everyone in the region stays safe.

The Sundance Film Festival announced more of its 2011 lineup earlier today and revealed the Premieres, Documentary Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections. David Mackenzie's Perfect Sense (formerly titled The Last Word) will make its world premiere at the festival. Sundance begins on January 20 and closes on January 30 in Park City Utah. A couple of new photos from Perfect Sense have also been released, including one featuring Ewan and fellow Scottish actor Ewen Bremner.

Finally, The Ghost Writer was named one of the Top Ten Independent Films of 2010 by the National Board Of Review.

Bad news for 'I Love You Phillip Morris'

We might not get to watch it in North America. It has only been a few weeks since it premiered to good reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, but I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Ewan McGregor still not been sold. The producer of the dark comedy says it has been taken off the market.

He added: "If it's a film that has somebody with marketing value, but it's a more difficult film, the price may not be large. Whoever's handling the sale of the film may take a while to come to terms with that."

The film was one of the most anticipated films of Sundance, but the complexity of the movie left distributors not knowing how the film could find an audience. Even those who loved the film were unsure of how to market it.

Producer Andrew Lazar says the film starring Ewan McGregor, is no longer on the market and the production company plans to announce a theatrical deal "very soon." However, during the festival, the filmmakers said they were going to continue editing the film -- turning its debut at Sundance into a work-in-progress screening -- so it remains unclear how the newer version will play.

I know how to market this and here's the premise: Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey make out in this movie. See distributors?

Ewan's Sundance press conference

This is why I love the internet: someone has posted the I Love You Phillip Morris press conference on youtube, so you can see Ewan McGregor and the rest of the cast and crew. Keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't get removed, but if it does you can tell me in the comment section and I'll do my best to find another version. There are five parts, and here is the first part for you:

Update: Found another video from Sundance. It is an interview from the red carpet premier of I Love You Phillip Morris.

Ewan McGregor a 'visionary' at Sundance

Here are a few red carpet highlights from Sundance for you:

McGregor said, in a really lovely Scottish accent, it was "really nice" to be getting the award and that it's "really lovely" to be here. For fans on the lookout for him, he'll be here till Tuesday.

Plain White T's (that's a rock band) singer Tom Higgenson had this to say about the award during his appearance at a red carpet event prior to McGregor's arrival.

"You know what … what is the award for?" Higgenson said. "I don't even know."

That's OK. Next question. How about that Ewan McGregor?

"He's an amazing actor," Higgenson rebounded. "Ever since 'Trainspotting' I've loved the guy."

"I love Ewan," said fellow Scottish actor Alan Cumming. "I think he's a real darling."

Ewan McGregor will be at Sundance

I've never been able to find official confirmation that Ewan McGregor will make an appearance even though he's supposed to be receiving an award, but Best of Ewan points us to an article that confirms he will be there. There will be a press conference with Ewan, Jim Carrey, Rodrigo Santoro at the premier of I Love you Phillip Morris on Sun. Jan. 18. I'm sure there will be photos of the premier and hopefully some kind soul puts some footage of the press conference up on youtube.

There is some pretty good early buzz for the film, and Damon Wise over at Empire has put the film at number 6 on his list of favorites from this year's festival lineup.

Here is the list of I love you Phillip Morris screenings:
