Lovely new trailer for Perfect Sense with Ewan McGregor and Eva Green

Director David Mackenzie (Young Adam, Spread) has two very different love story films coming out in the next month, the festival-set You Instead and the pandemic-apocalyptic Perfect Sense.

A brilliant new trailer for the latter has now arrived, courtesy of Empire, and it gives us a lovely look at the budding romance between Ewan McGregor’s Michael, a chef, and Eva Green’s Susan, a scientist.

“The story of two people who begin to fall in love as the world begins to fall apart.

Susan is a scientist. Michael is a chef. He takes a break from the kitchen heat in the alleyway below her apartment; she smokes a cigarette at the window above. He calls up for a light – the first spark in their passionate affair.

But the world is about to change dramatically. As love turns Susan and Michael’s lives upside down, people across the globe begin to experience
strange symptoms, which first affect the emotions then the senses, one by one.

Everything changes. But people laugh, they cry, they eat and drink, they go about their daily business. They adapt, they change, they cope, they live and they love – because life must go on. And so it does.”

Parts of the synopsis admittedly read a little like Steven Soderbergh’s next film, Contagion, and some of the scenes in this new trailer even feel quite like it. But when you have two films that have a globally-spreading virus at their centre, at least some of the scenes are bound to look similar, and we shouldn’t hold that against either of them. Both are set to be excellent projects, and both should be very much worth watching.

Perfect Sense unites McGregor and Mackenzie after working together on Young Adam back in 2003, and McGregor is also united with fellow Trainspotting co-star Ewen Bremner, seen alongside him in the kitchen in the trailer.

Jack the Giant Killer reunites Scottish Trainspotting stars and adds Avatar effects team

Scottish actor Ewen Bremner is linking back up with fellow Trainspotting star Ewan McGregor for a blockbuster movie next summer based on fairytale story Jack and the Beanstalk

Ewen was speaking to STV at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where he was appearing to promote Perfect Sense, the new David Mackenzie movie in which he stars alongside Ewan McGregor and Eva Green.

He said of the highly anticipated new movie: “It’s quite an extravaganza, a very special effects-heavy movie with these characters, these giants that are relating to humans. Technically it’s very difficult to make it convincing, but I think we’ve broken the back of that technology with things like Avatar. I think some of the same team that made that work are working on our film, and that technology’s advancing so fast. It’s a fantastical fairytale story about Jack and the Beanstalk, which Ewan McGregor is also working on, and Bill Nighy from Page Eight [a film also starring Ewen on at EIFF] is also working on as well, it’s quite exciting. Bryan Singer’s directing it, who’s made some really strong stuff, and it’s a big Hollywood blockbuster.”

The film is billed as “a modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess”.

Perfect Sense screens at Edinburgh International Film Festival

The latest kitchen film to be creating a stir stars Ewan McGregor as a high-end chef in a movie that marries seemingly incongruous genres and topics into one: food, love, horror, science fiction and the Apocalypse.

Or, as Bon Appetit magazine calls it, a "Foodpocalyptic romance drama."

Perfect Sense centers around the sensuous love affair between Michael (McGregor), a talented chef at a fine dining restaurant, and Susan, an epidemiologist played by Eva Green frantically searching for answers as a worldwide epidemic is poised to break out.

One by one, people around the world fall victim to a strange phenomenon which strips them of their senses - smell, taste - and induces intense, uncontrollable emotional breakdowns.

Ewan McGregor coming to Edinburgh Film Festival for Perfect Sense premiere

Ewan McGregor will be attending the Edinburgh International Film Festival next month to attend the European Premiere of Perfect Sense, his new movie with Scottish director David Mackenzie.

The pair previously teamed up for 2003’s critically acclaimed Young Adam, and the Glasgow-set sci-fi drama tells the tale of a chef, Michael (McGregor) and a scientist, Susan (Eva Green) who fall in love just as the world begins to fall apart.

McGregor film ticket sell-out forces move

The Edinburgh Evening News reports that the European premiere of Ewan McGregor's new movie has been forced to move to a 1500-seat venue after tickets sold out.

The premiere of Perfect Sense was due to take place at the Cameo, which holds around 400, during the Edinburgh International Film Festival but has now moved to the Festival Theatre due to a sell-out of advanced tickets.

McGregor will be in attendance at the premiere on June 18 which now will fill the Festival Theatre.

He said: "I'm delighted to be able to come to Edinburgh to support the film festival and the European premiere of Perfect Sense and look forward to seeing the film in such an amazing venue."

Ewan McGregor update: talk show cancellations + 2011 Sundance lineup

Ewan McGregor had been rescheduled to be on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson this Friday (December 3) to promote I Love You Phillip Morris after his original appearance was canceled. Unfortunately it looks like this rescheduled appearance has been canceled too. He wasn't on today's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show either. Ewan was reportedly trapped in Thailand last week because of monsoons, so that could be the reason for the cancellations. I hope everyone in the region stays safe.

The Sundance Film Festival announced more of its 2011 lineup earlier today and revealed the Premieres, Documentary Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections. David Mackenzie's Perfect Sense (formerly titled The Last Word) will make its world premiere at the festival. Sundance begins on January 20 and closes on January 30 in Park City Utah. A couple of new photos from Perfect Sense have also been released, including one featuring Ewan and fellow Scottish actor Ewen Bremner.




Finally, The Ghost Writer was named one of the Top Ten Independent Films of 2010 by the National Board Of Review.

Ewan McGregor's 'The Last Word' retitled?

There hasn't been too much news on The Last Word lately, but a brief article over at Deadline suggests that the film might have been renamed Perfect Sense. Director, David Mackenzie is reportedly still editing the film which stars Ewan McGregor as a chef. It's also listed under its new name over at IMDb, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the information is accurate. The project is a love story set in a city where people are slowly losing their sensory perception. No official release date has been announced.
