Ewan McGregor briefly discusses 'I Love You Phillip Morris'

After an extended delay, I Love You Phillip Morris finally opened in limited release in the US last Friday; Ewan McGregor recently talked about the film's release with the Chicago Sun-Times:

“I don’t pay attention to these matters,” McGregor says with a sigh. “I’m not in control of release dates. All I know is that I had a lovely time working with Jim Carrey and I want everyone to actually see what we did together. I think the ultimate judge is the audience.”

McGregor calls the film “a wonderful romance between two men stuck in prison. I play a guy who forgot to return a car and finds himself in jail. That’s where he meets Jim.”

Along the way, he shows some skin. “There’s a brief moment — please focus on the word brief — when I shuck off my robe and climb into bed,” McGregor says. “I have to laugh when I read about my big nude scene. Don’t people have better things to discuss than the idea that you see my naked arse for about 10 seconds? Of course, the Internet turned that into this rumor that I’m naked throughout half of the movie. Absolutely not true! ” [Cindy Pearlman]

'I Love You Phillip Morris' to finally open in December

After months of delays, it looks like I Love You Phillip Morris will open on December 3 in North America. In the film, Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey play two inmates who fall in love in prison. U.S. indie distributor Roadside Attractions picked up the film after recently acquiring Alejandro González Iñárritu's Biutiful. The trailer is below.

'Phillip Morris' may never see the light of day

At least not in the U.S. anyway. Back in April I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Ewan McGregor lost its North American distributor after months of its release date being rescheduled. Now a "California District judge has issued a preliminary injunction preventing the U.S. release." The film's official website is down and The Hollywood Reporter says that the new release date is sometime in October "just in time for Oscar season." You can get more of the legal details over at The Hollywood Reporter, but it doesn't look like that October release date is realistic.

'I Love You Phillip Morris' loses North American distributor

There seems to be no end to the drama with this film. Last week, Consolidated Pictures Group pulled I Love You Phillip Morris with Ewan McGregor from its already rescheduled April 30 release date, and then moved its release to July 30. Now the financiers of the film, EuropaCorp, have taken the North American rights from Consolidated Pictures Group for breach of contract:
The deal struck when the film was picked up at Sundance was a $3 million guarantee to EuropaCorp for the film a promise of an $8 million marketing campaign by CPG. Apparently, the $3 million guarantee was to be paid upon delivery of the film. Well, apparently EuropaCorp handed over the film 90 days ago, but didn't receive their minimum payment putting the wheels in motion for CPG to lose the film, but they aren't going down without a fight.

“We’re the distributors right now, we have a contract and we’re asking Europa to deliver certain things. We’ve hired legal counsel, and if we need to go to arbitration, we will. We plan to distribute this film,” CPG's Timothy Patrick Cavanaugh.

Further complicating matters is the fact that CPG has already struck deals with Canadian distributor Alliance Atlantis for the film to play north of the border, as well as a DVD deal with Fox to distribute the picture on home video. There's no word yet if those deals with remain intact or if they will have to be renegotiated.

Quietly coming in to score the film in the wake of this mess is another small, but more firmly established distributor, Newmarket Films. According to sources if EuropaCorp gets the film back in their hands, they hand off the North American rights to Newmarket Films who would release the film this fall.

But all this is a big "if." Should CPG fight to hang onto the film, "I Love You Phillip Morris" could end up tied up courts for the immediately forseeable future. Our guess is that they will try and get some kind of arbitration deal worked out though if they failed to meet the obligations of their contract, we what EuropaCorp would have to gain out of such a scenario. So basically, until this is sorted out, no I Love You Phillip Morris in North America.

'I Love You Phillip Morris' gets another release date

Last week, Consolidated Pictures Group pulled I Love You Phillip Morris with Ewan McGregor from its already rescheduled April 30 release date without announcing a new release date. The film now has a new limited July 30 release and an expansion on August 6, though according to one of Jim Carrey's tweets the film is set to open in the fall. With this being probably the fourth reschedule it's likely that these dates could be changed yet again. Stay tuned.

'I Love You Phillip Morris' delayed

This is really disappointing news. Consolidated Pictures Group, the company distributing I Love You Phillip Morris has postponed the film's US release again. The film, starring Ewan McGregor, had been scheduled for a Valentine's Day release, then a March 26 release, and was then rescheduled for April 30 for a limited release before being expanded in the weeks after. A spokesperson announced that the film has once again been delayed and will not be released on April 30. No release date has been scheduled.

New interview with Ewan McGregor, 'Knockout' shooting in New Mexico

Ewan did an interview with The Scotsman to promote I Love You Phillip Morris which opens in the UK this Wednesday. It was first published on Saturday, March 13 and and you can read an excerpt below and go to The Scotsman for the full interview.
"I'd like to be Philip Seymour Hoffman's boyfriend. I think we'd make a good couple."
If the rule in Hollywood is that the closet doors must stay resolutely closed, then Ewan McGregor has just thrown them open to the soundtrack of I Am What I Am with a rustle of pink taffeta and a whiff of Dolce & Gabbana. He's not coming out, though. Of course he's not. McGregor's not gay; he's been married – to French production designer Eve Mavrakis – for nearly 15 years and they have three daughters (Clara, 14, Esther, eight, and Jamiyan, seven, who the couple adopted from Mongolia). But that's not what we're interested in here. Today, it's all about the boys. And, as it happens, if McGregor had to choose a "bf", Mr Hoffman would be the lucky fella.

"We'd look good, we'd look slightly odd and we'd go to interesting parties and people would be interested in us," says McGregor, clearly warming to his theme. "I don't know him, but I'd like to be his boyfriend."

If the subject matter seems a little unusual, the reason is McGregor's new film, I Love You Phillip Morris. A funny, tragic, quirky movie, written and directed by Bad Santa creators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, ILYPM is an astonishing, absurdist, gay romance. [Claire Black]

Shooting on Knockout is expected to go on through Thursday in Los Alamos, New Mexico. There is no word on whether Ewan McGregor will be in New Mexico for the shoot, but here's the filming schedule:

Monday through Tuesday

Location – Based camp at West Road between the Ice rink and Camp May Road. Filming at State Road 4 near American Springs Road/Dome Road. West Road open to traffic. Intermittent traffic control at SR 4.

Wednesday through Thursday

Location – Empty lot in Ponderosa Estates. Base camp at the Golf Course parking lot. Intermittent traffic control in the vicinity of Aspen Drive near Parker Construction in Ponderosa Estates.
