Ewen Bremner: 'Snowpiercer' character passports

Character Passports Introduce the Inhabitants of Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Snowpiercer’
Snowpiercer - Ewen Bremner

Snowpiercer is Korean director Bong Joon-ho‘s first English-language outing, but he’s managed to assemble a cast even the most experienced Hollywood directors would kill for, including Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, Ed Harris, Chris Evans, and Song Kangho.
We’ve seen little of those stars so far, aside from a poster here and a still image there, but today we have much better looks at all of them thanks to a series of character “passports.”

Showtime's aptly timed drama pilot The Vatican is adding to its cast. The same day the Vatican named Jorge Mario Bergoglio its new pope, Scottish actor Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting) has joined the ranks of the Kyle Chandler starrer.
The Vatican, a contemporary thriller about spirituality, power and politics, is set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic Church. The potential series would explore the relationships and rivalries in addition to the mysteries and miracles behind the institution.

Ewen Bremner: 'Snowpiercer' poster and interview

First poster for SNOWPIERCER officially released

We originally saw part of the Snowpiercer poster months ago but it was in low-resolution and was missing a tag line. Also, listen to two actors, John Hurt ("Contact") and Ewen Bremner ("Trainspotting"), as they discuss the film.

"In Snowpiercer I play kind of a... because there is kind of a microcosm of humanity all on a train, which is going all around the globe. You know, in a small ice age. Um it all sounds a bit preposterous, but the fact is that it's based on a graphic novel, which is a French graphic novel from round about the 80's. So, it is... kind of not real in that sense. It creates it's own reality, you'll see what I mean. And I'm playing an erstwhile leader, of revolutions, that is held in great regard by the young man who is leading the revolution at the moment. Because all the rift raft is at the back of the train and all the good ones live in the front of the train. So the revolution seizes through the train. And he (Joon-ho Bong) is a remarkable director. So, that is what I do there, but it turns out he is not as admirable as he might have been considered." - John Hurt

Snow Piercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.
Snow Piercer is directed by Joon-ho Bong. The cast includes Chris Evans, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Alison Pill and Song-Kang-ho. The film will hit theaters Summer 2013.

Ewen Bremner: 'Accused' reviews

TV review: Accused

The last in Jimmy McGovern's series of one-off crime-dramas was unremittingly grim, desolate – and compelling.

The last film in the Accused (BBC1) series, Jimmy McGovern's collection of stand-alone dramas, wasn't quite stand-alone: it was connected by a narrative thread to the previous film. This one opened with prison officer Tina (Anna Maxwell Martin) escorting Stephen to his six-year stretch in a young offenders' institute for stabbing his stepmother. He explained he'd only been following orders.

"Oh right, someone told you to do it," she said. "Who?"

"Alastair Campbell."

That was the very last laugh on offer, and if you saw last week's unremittingly bleak instalment concerning the stabbing, you might not have found it all that funny. But this film was bleaker still: before you knew it, Stephen had hanged himself in his cell. The attempted resuscitation scene that followed was positively numbing. Meanwhile Stephen's father (a remarkable and straight-faced turn from comedian John Bishop) was left alone in the visiting area, unaware of what the officers already knew: his son was dead.

It got worse. The story centred on Tina's colleague Frank's failure to monitor the boy prior to his death, and Frank's insistence that Tina cover up for him. Tina is no hero; her determination to be honest was down to protecting her job – she has kids, and besides, she needed a new boiler. Frank, it was clear, would do a lot to save his own skin, and the drama was obviously not taking place in a moral sphere where people routinely got rewarded for doing the right thing.

Without wishing to give too much away in case you missed it and wish to see it, it all went steeply downhill from there, although not predictably. The disjointed structure made for a few surprises, and every unsparing detail was finely wrought, from the rote recitation of prison rules that serves as an induction ("Don't damage prison property, don't kick your door, don't shout out the window, don't push your panic button unless you're dying, don't seal your outgoing mail ..."), to the chilly atmosphere of Tina's freezing house, all seemingly designed to drive you to the depths of despair. The performances were all brilliant, but in particular Maxwell Martin managed to make Tina both vulnerable and implacable.

The film did finish on a final, optimistic note, but you had to get there first. By the end, your idea of what counted as a happy outcome had shifted pretty dramatically.

BFI announce Great Expectations as the LFF 2012 closing night film

After announcing earlier in the week that this year’s BFI London Film Festival opening night film will be Frankenweenie, they’ve now announced that the closing night film will be Mike Newell’s anticipated adaptation of Great Expectations.

Newell’s adaptation will be making its world première the Toronto International Film Festival on 11th September, and will then make its European début here in London on Sunday, 21st October, before its UK-wide release at the end of November.

Jeremy Irvine stars as the young Pip, and is joined by a stellar cast headed up by Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Holliday Grainger, Jason Flemyng, Robbie Coltrane, Sally Hawkins, David Walliams, and Ewen Bremner.

Newell, whose credits include the classic Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is directing a script penned by the best-selling novelist/screenwriter David Nicholls (Starter for 10, One Day).

Great Expectations sounds like a magnificent choice for the closing night film, with one of the most promising casts of the year. Following its European début at the BFI LFF, it will then be released in the UK and Ireland on 30th November. No word yet on when it will be reaching screens across the Atlantic, but with a bit of luck, hopefully it will reach North American cinemas before the year’s end, too.

Ewan McGregor and Ewen Bremner want to try their hand at comedy

Trainspotting stars Ewan McGregor and Ewen Bremner have revealed they’d love to try their hand at comedy.

The pair shot to fame together as junkies in the gritty druggie film. But now the duo are desperate to play it for laughs.

Edinburgh-born Bremner said: “Ewan and I have worked together four times, but he says he’s had enough of doing the serious stuff.

“He has a really great sense of humour and comedy timing which you don’t really get to see on film.

“We’d love to do a comedy as usually when we’re appearing together it ends up with me playing a daft character while he’s the straight guy that’s not even allowed to smile.

“He’s desperate for us to do something stupid together.”

The pair first met when McGregor played junkie Renton opposite Bremner’s loveable wimp Spud in the 1996 cult hit.

They went on to appear in the 2001 warzone film Black Hawk Down before teaming up again for Perfect Sense last year.

And they will also appear together in the fairytale fantasy Jack The Giant Killer next year. But Bremner reveals he is also desperate to wave goodbye to his ‘goofy’ screen image.

And he’ll show off his “bad ass” side playing a sinister spin doctor in big budget BBC political drama Blackout with Christopher Eccleston. Ewen, 40, said: “This is the first ruthless part I’ve ever had. I’m too old to play the goofy kid any more — it’s good being a bad ass for a change.”

Ewen plays menacing council official Jerry Durrans who persuades Eccleston’s drunk Daniel Demoys to stand for mayor.

But his boozing leaves his marriage on the rocks and worse is to come when after one huge bender Eccleston thinks that he may have killed someone.

Ewen said: “I’m a mover and shaker who operates in the shadows.

“It was great getting to show my ruthless streak.”

Ewen has a string of all-star movies in the pipeline, including the “craziest” film of his career — the futuristic Snowpiercer.

He added: “It will show me in a very different light from usual. But I guess turning 40 means even Spud needs to grow up.”

First Look: BBC1 Drama ‘Blackout’ Trailer

Here’s a first look at new BBC One drama Blackout starring Christopher Eccleston, Dervla Kirwan (Injustice, The Silence) and Ewen Bremner (Page Eight, Perfect Sense) in this original three-part drama produced by Red Production Company (Exile, Single Father).

Also starring are Bafta winner Andrew Scott (Sherlock, The Hour), Lyndsey Marshal (Garrow’s Law, Being Human), Rebecca Callard (32 Brinkburn Street, Robin Hood), MyAnna Buring (The Twilight Saga, Any Human Heart) and Branka Katic (The Jury II, Big Love).

Blackout follows Daniel Demoys (Eccleston), a stranger in his own life. Over the years he has gone from being an idealistic young man with a burning desire to make the world a better place, to a disillusioned and corrupt council official. His alcoholism has driven a wedge between him and wife, Alex (Kirwan), and their three children. The fallout from his alcohol fuelled actions prove agonising for all around him.

When Daniel wakes up after another drunken night, he realises that he might be responsible for a murder. A dramatic act of redemption buys him public adoration, so much so that he has become a candidate in the race for Mayor, persuaded by council official Jerry Durrans (Bremner), and lawyer sister Lucy (Marshal).

The public’s opinion of Daniel as a straight talking everyday hero couldn’t be higher. They are enthralled by his no nonsense determination not to treat the electorate like fools and by his openness about his personal problems and struggle with addiction.

As his public star rises ever higher and he tries to repair the damage done to his private life, he is painfully aware that it could all come crashing down at any moment. With Detective Dalien Bevan (Scott) hot on his trail and determined to gain respect in the force, he could be just the person to do this.

With Daniel’s deepening relationships with Bevan’s ex-wife Sylvie (Buring), hospital nurse Donna (Katic), and the murdered man’s daughter Ruth (Callard), he finds himself in even more of a tangled web than he could ever have imagined.

Blackout was commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, Drama Commissioning, and Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One. The producer is Matthew Bird (Death In Paradise, The Street) and director is Tom Green (Misfits, Kid). Executive Producers are Christopher Aird for BBC, Nicola Shindler for Red Production Company, and written by Bill Gallagher (Lark Rise to Candleford, The Prisoner).

Episode one of Blackout is confirmed to air Monday 2 July on BBC One at 9pm.
