Joanna Vanderham: stage debut and Emmy nomination

Joanna Vanderham to star in Donmar Trafalgar’s 'The Promise'
Penelope Skinner’s adaptation of The Promise will kick off Donmar Warehouse’s final season of RAD at Trafalgar Studios. Based on the Russian play by Aleksei Arbuzov, The Promise will star Max Bennett as Marat, Gwilym Lee as Leonidik and Joanna Vanderham as Lika. Directed by Alex Simms, the play will run November 15 and through December 8, with an opening night set for November 19.

The Promise takes place in 1943 in war-ravaged Leningrad, and follows three teenagers thrown together by history. In the years following the siege, allegiances shift, love falters and their vow of solidarity is stretched to its limits.

Bennett has appeared on stage in Luise Miller, Relatively Speaking, Posh, Danton’s Death and Mrs. Warren’s Profession. Lee’s stage credits include King Lear, Hamlet, Othello and Oedipus. Vanderham is making her stage début in The Promise and is best known for her TV work in The Paradise, Dancing on the Edge, Young James, Above Suspicion and The Runaway.

Emmy nominations

British television productions received a leading seven International Emmy nominations on Monday, including best actor and actress nods for Jason Isaacs in "Case Histories" and newcomer Joanna Vanderham in "The Runaway."

Isaacs, best known for playing the villainous Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, was nominated for his role in the series based on Kate Atkinson's crime mystery novels in which he portrays Jackson Brodie, an Edinburgh-based, tough-but-empathetic private detective with a tragic past.

Vanderham, who was plucked out of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to make her professional debut in "The Runaway," plays a young girl who grows up on the streets of London's sleazy Soho district in the '60s and '70s and has a doomed romance with a childhood sweetheart.

Alan Cumming, Henry Ian Cusick, David Tennant, and Kevin McKidd all attended last night's 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

Alan Cumming had been nominated for outstanding guest actor in a drama for his role in The Good Wife; the Emmy went to John Lithgow for his role in Dexter. Alan's Good Wife co-star, Archie Panjabi won best supporting actress in a drama, so congratulations to her. If you've missed the first season of The Good Wife, the DVD debuts September 14 in the US. Photos and video of Alan Cumming at various Emmy events (including the AMC after-party and the Entertainment Tonight Emmy after-party) are below.

Henry Ian Cusick and his wife Annie were also at the ceremony. Thanks to Kathy for sharing some of these photos.

Alan Cumming nominated for an Emmy

Alan Cumming was nominated earlier today in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category for his role in The Good Wife. Alan had been cast as a series regular earlier this year. The award ceremony will take place on August 29 live on ABC. Alan talked to USA Today about his Emmy nomination:
"I didn't believe it was going to happen. My jet lag is why I didn't pay more attention. The show is such a nice group of people and other actors have already emailed me. The creators of the show have emailed me and my husband. You get a big outpouring of warm fuzziness all around you," says Cumming.

Better yet, Cumming starts off the second season of the show as a series regular. And he knows "absolutely nothing" about what's coming up on Wife. "We start shooting next week and we don't have the scripts yet. I would probably spill the beans very easily," he says. [Donna Freydkin]

Craig Ferguson or Neil Patrick Harris to host the Emmys?

Last week, there was speculation that Emmy producer Dan Mischer was considering Craig Ferguson to host the Emmys in September. Now there's word that because Neil Patrick Harris did such a great job hosting the Tonys (he really did, he was adorable), he might also be considered to host the show on September 13. Since they both work for CBS, it's really hard to guess who Mischer will choose.

Could Craig Ferguson host the Emmys?

Emmy producer Dan Mischer might be considering Craig Ferguson to host the show this year:

All the talk has been about Conan O'Brien taking over The Tonight Show and Jimmy Fallon taking over Late Night, but let's not forget Craig Ferguson over at CBS' Late Late Show. He might host the Emmys this year.

That's one of the changes being discussed by producer Dan Mischer. And let's be honest here: anything would be better than last year's horrifying hosting job done by the team of Ryan Seacrest, Jeff Probst, Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel. It was a train wreck from start to finish, with only one moment that was kinda funny (when they gave the award for Best Reality Host and dramatically went to a commercial before announcing the winner.

I like Ferguson (though I'm not a fan of his talk show) and he'd probably make for a good host. Of course, people like Stephen Colbert, David Letterman, and the casts of 30 Rock and The Office would be good too. CBS could go with someone from their network but they don't have to (and the network that hosts the award show usually doesn't). [TV Squad]
