David Tennant: new TV drama, United news, TV appearances

David Tennant to star in TV drama 'The Spies Of Warsaw'

Former Doctor Who star David Tennant will play a French spy in a new two-part Second World War-era drama by Likely Lads writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.
The actor will appear with Merlin star Janet Montgomery in the BBC Four show The Spies Of Warsaw based on the best-selling novel by Alan Furst.

Tennant's character is drawn into the murky world of espionage in the story which is set in Poland, Paris, London and Berlin in the years leading up to the outbreak of war.
BBC Four controller Richard Klein described the show as "a tense, passionate and sexy love story set against the increasingly strident clang of coming war".

He said: "Spies Of Warsaw is an entertaining, thrilling and insightful drama with a very different take on the Second World War, seen through the eyes of characters who know from the start that they and their fellow countrymen will face the brunt of the horrors to come: this is top class drama, and perfect for BBC Four."

Clement and La Frenais have written some of the most popular British television shows of the last 40 years including The Likely Lads, Porridge and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
Filming will start next month in Poland.

Netflix Sign Up BBC United Drama For Streaming

Netflix are said to be one of several international buyers of the rights to BBC’s English direct-to-TV film United, a feature starring David Tennant and Dougray Scott, based on the true story of the tragic 1958 Munich air disaster that killed many of the Manchester United football team of that season.

The crash, which saw 21 people (including 8 players) lose their lives (out of a total 45 people on-board the plane), shocked the world of football (in particular in England), and tributes are still made to this day, most notably on its 50th anniversary in 2008. The 90-minute long film, written by Chris Chibnall and directed by James Strong, was first aired over three years later.
A year after it was premièred on BBC Two, the production is now being licensed abroad through Content Television, with online streaming giant Netflix snapping up the broadcasting rights in both USA and Canada.

Other multiple rights holders now include Universal Pictures Pty for Australia & New Zealand, Tele-Munchen Group for ‘German-speaking Europe’, and subscription HBO for a number of countries throughout Asia. European nation-wide broadcasters picking up rights include TV2 (Denmark), RTE (Ireland), NRK (Norway), ITI Neovision (Poland), and SVT (Sweden), and ITI Neovision (Poland). Paradiso hold all rights to United in Japan, whilst M Pictures hold a similar arrangement in Thailand, and a number of other providers such as Sundance Global Channel and Carmen Film have also signed deals, the culmination of an impressive session in Cannes (France) for Content Television.

"United": interview with David Tennant

The BBC Press Office have released an interview with David Tennant regarding his role in the upcoming movie, "United"

What attracted you to United?
I've worked with James Strong (director) and Chris Chibnall (writer) several times before and James sent me the script. I knew it would be worth reading because it came from him. I'm not a football expert but I was completely bowled over by the incredible story and journey that Manchester United went on. I thought that if it had grabbed and moved me as much as that, then clearly the story must be universal, worth telling and something I wanted to be part of.

What is United about?
The film is about all sorts of things because what happened is so extraordinary. On a very basic level it's a true story but it also looks at the arbitrary nature of fate, the capriciousness of life and the triumph of the human spirit. The film deals with how we pull ourselves together after tragedy, because people cope with grief in so many different ways. We're telling an utterly compelling and dramatic story as it happened. As I started to research this, I realised there's a fair amount of quibbling over detail but the basic facts of the story are indisputable.

The film also follows the relationship between Jimmy and Bobby Charlton. You see him finding Bobby, nurturing and bringing him through. It was a hugely important relationship for both of them. Bobby Charlton said he learnt everything from Jimmy Murphy and credits his career to him.

We try to tell the story and honour it, because it's a story that should be told. It's extraordinary that this hasn't been dramatised before. There's never been a straightforward film or TV drama about this extraordinary dramatic story and it's long overdue.

Dougray Scott interview on set of 'United'

Dougray Scott talks to Barbara Hodgson on the set of a new drama about the Munich air disaster filmed in the North East.

It was a defining moment in football history. When a plane carrying Manchester United players crashed on its third take-off attempt on a slush-covered runway in Munich in February, 1958 it brought to a tragic end the best team the great Matt Busby was ever to manage.

Most people know about the tragedy in which eight of the young, hugely talented players – nicknamed the Busby Babes – died.

But what most people are less familiar with is the story of its aftermath: the survivors’ struggle with guilt and terrible injuries and a lack of desire ever to play football again.

A young Bobby Charlton was among the survivors, as was Busby himself, and now their side of the tragedy is the focus of a new feature-length BBC drama, United, made in the region with the help of £150,000 investment from Northern Film & Media.

It stars Dougray Scott – who’s made quite a name for himself in America with roles in Mission Impossible ll and Desperate Housewives – as Busby, and former Dr Who David Tennant as trainer Jimmy Murphy, while talented young Skins actor Jack O’Connell joins the Scotsmen in a lead role as Ashington-born Charlton.

Carlisle United interview with David Tennant

Earlier this month, David Tennant gave an interview for the Carlisle United website during the shooting of United. A clip of the interview is below:

David Tennant on the set of 'United'

David Tennant has been in Tynemouth, North Tyneside shooting scenes for United:

Surprised passengers and TV fans coming out of Tynemouth station were stunned to see cameras pinpointed on David, wrapped in a 1950s style camel coat, and stood beside an old-fashioned car.

IT engineer Barry Ward, from Sunderland, was among the starstruck onlookers.

The 27-year-old said: “I asked a security man and was told they were filming the return of Bobby Charlton but I could only see David and a female actor. They got off a train, came out the station and were then getting into the car and I could hear David’s broad Scottish accent.

“I know he’s from Scotland anyway but when you heard him speak he had a very exaggerated accent.

“There were quite a lot of amused faces when people came out and saw Doctor Who was in town.” [Sunday Sun]

United will air on BBC Two sometime next year in the UK and will reportedly get a theatrical release internationally.
