Emun Elliott: interview

Q&A with Game of Thrones and Labyrinth star Emun Elliott, 29, who talks cruise ships, John Lennon and comfort food
The Game of Thrones actor Emun Elliott

Tell us about your role in Labyrinth...
I play a 12th-century French chevalier, a sword-wielding, horse-riding knight. It’s more enjoyable when I’m disguised in some way; stepping into someone else’s shoes is part of the reason why I became an actor.

Had you read Kate Mosse’s novel before accepting the role?
I’ve been in a few things based on books but I never read them until I’m offered the job – I think it would be torture to read it and not get the part. But when I got this part I did read Labyrinth and I really enjoyed it – it’s epic and sprawling.

Ever had a career back-up plan?
I had to wait a month to find out if I’d got into drama school, and I started to look into cruise ships. So if they had taken me I would have ended up on some enormous liner singing to bored passengers. I’m glad that acting worked out.

So you’re musical?
I’ve played the violin since I was seven but stopped because there was a stage when it became ‘uncool’. I was listening to Nirvana and wanted to play the guitar, so I ditched the violin. I play guitar to this day – and piano. If there was a way to combine music with acting for a role it would be amazing.

Actor Tony Curran reveals new sci-fi and mystical side as he plays roles in Labyrinth and film Defiance
His first taste of acting was at 14 when he was a pupil at Holyrood Secondary in Glasgow and went for auditions for STV kids’ drama Stookie.

If Tony Curran’s recent roles are the stuff of fantasy, real life isn’t far off it either.

The actor, 43, is starring alongside Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay in Labyrinth, Channel 4’s drama based on the multi-million-selling novel by Kate Mosse.

And he will next be seen as an alien gangster in sci-fi drama Defiance.

They are the latest stops on a whirlwind career which has taken in films including Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, the award-winning Red Road and The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, not to mention roles in the Underworld and Blade franchises.

His TV credits include CSI, 24, Boardwalk Empire, Pillars Of The Earth, Young Herriot and Doctor Who.

Tony, who now lives in Los Angeles with his wife Mai, said: “It’s been an amazing journey. I’ve lived in London, New York and now LA.

“I have been very fortunate to be able to work and get the opportunity to play different roles.

“It’s nice to do big studio pictures and then work in Glasgow on films like Red Road and then dress up as a vampire or an alien. I think that’s why a lot of people are actors – the versatility.

“I’ve been lucky. I don’t for a minute take for granted the good fortune I have had. You don’t like to get ideas above your station, especially a boy from the south side of Glasgow.”

‘Defiance’ Series Premiere: Watch the First 14 Minutes Now
With a widespread marketing campaign and a multi-platform tie-in video game launching just shy of simultaneously for Defiance, Syfy is working hard to get the word out about their new sci-fi/western series. Now, three weeks prior to the show’s launch, the cable network is releasing the first 14 minutes and 27 seconds of the pilot episode.

From Kevin Murphy (Caprica), the show is set in a near-future earth that has been wrecked and re-shaped by invading aliens. The show stars Grant Bowler (True Blood), Stephanie Leonidas (MirrorMask), Jamie Murray (Warehouse 13), Graham Greene (Twilight: New Moon), and Julie Benz (Dexter) as the residents of a small “border town” called Defiance, which has risen from the remnants of St. Louis.

Here’s the official synopsis for the show from Syfy:

In the year 2046, it’s a new Earth – with new rules. Over thirty years after various alien races arrived on Earth, the landscape is completely altered, terraformed nearly beyond recognition. To the town of Defiance, on what used to be St. Louis, comes the mysterious Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his charge, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas). As they settle into town – overseen by the mayor, Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz) and filled with residents like the powerful Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene), enterprising lounge owner Kenya (Mia Kirshner) and the ambitious, alien Tarrs (Tony Curran and Jaime Murray) – events begin to unfold that threaten the fragile peace this border town has fought for.

Defiance Panel with Tony Curran and Jaime Murray at MCM Birmingham Comic Con
Defiance makes for a uniquely immersive property, in that it is both a MMO video game and also an epic sci-fi drama series. Jaime Murray and Tony Curran were at the MCM Birmingham Comic Con to talk about the upcoming TV series that they both star in.

The show follows on from the aftermath of a great war between various races of aliens and humans. With the Earth unstable and a distinct lack of any government, both aliens and humans realise that they’ll have to cooperate if they wish to survive. The frontier town of Defiance is of the few with a sense of order, co-founded by Datak Tarr (Tony Curran), a Castithan who is happy to work alongside other races and wishes for a better future for his family. However, his wife Stahma Tarr (Jaime Murray) wishes to break from the traditional roles expected of her by her caste and at times goads her husband into gaining more control.

“They couldn’t agree how we should look,” said Jaime on her and Tony’s appearance in the show. “They wanted us to look human enough, be the closest to human so you can relate to us, but still alien.”

“Eventually once we got it, it takes about two hours to apply the wigs,” said Tony. “There are other characters there that have more prosthetics, more alien like as it were. We’re alien enough, we do have our own language.”

“I learnt loads of alien,” said Jaime of the new language she had to learn for her character, created by David Peterson who is also responsible for the Dothraki language in Game of Thrones. “Our language is spoken very, very fast. I listened to these tapes and I thought, ‘Oh my God!’ I mean I mess up the English language; I don’t need another language to mess up! I really learnt it, and I just said it for weeks.”

Tony also praised the show’s costume supervisor, Colleen Atwood. “She’s done mainly all of Tim Burton’s movies. She’s incredibly talented. [The costumes had] a nice look to it; it didn’t try too hard to have this alien exterior.”

“The costumes, they ended up being quite period, quite vintage,” said Jaime. “I wear a lot of corsets, I’m often laced into stuff. I need someone else to dress me in the mornings! Sometimes I have to have them come to the loo with me!”

Spoiler free review of Syfy’s Defiance – A refreshing science fiction space western

Ever since Syfy changed its name and added WWE to its lineup, its been looking hard and long for a cult classic scifi show to call its own. Over the past few years, Syfy has increased its reality TV lineup and competition shows based on public demand. We are not one of those people who enjoy reality TV, so when we first heard about the concept behind defiance we were excited but worried. Syfy is known for its goofy saturday creature features and hasn’t had a hard hitting true to the core science fiction scripted show of its own since Battlestar Galactica finished. So word of Defiance comes along and the first thing we hear “video game and tv series tie in”.

The idea of bringing in a video game to some how go along with the tv series was, what many considered, TV suicide. At a budget over over $100 million, it was a gamble that even large networks dare touch. To put this into prospective, Terra Nova on Fox cost $50mil for its first season and was cancelled and this was Fox spending the money. HBO, which is a premium pay channel, spent about $60 mil on its first season of Game Of Thrones. Now breaking down that $100 mil, $50 goes into the TV show and the rest into the game. The burden of the cost for the game is split between Trion and NBC, in which Trion takes the larger burden. The fact remains that $50 mil for Syfy and its parent company NBC Universal is a huge gamble.

So what is the bottom line on this gamble? Was it worth the money spent? ABSOLUTELY. And we will give you our spoiler free review as to why.

What is Defiance?

We were able to screen the first 3 episodes, which included a 2 hour pilot episode. The concept brings back memories of Firefly and the western style space drama it brought along with it. The story feels as though you could go on a thousand side stories with endless possibilities. Sometimes shows get lost on that and spend too much time with ‘filler’ episodes and don’t advance the main plot. Defiance makes the right choice of mixing the two. While there will be an episode or two where the main story is what you might call a ‘side plot’, it manages to still advance the main plot by tying into the side story.

Who are the citizens of Defiance?
Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler) is a former lieutenant in the Earth Military Coalition who fought in the alien conflict. Born prior to the Arks’ arrival, he saw his comfortable life turned upside down when the war between the humans and Votans began. The conflict took its toll, and in the aftermath of Arkfall, he found himself a wanderer in a dangerous new world. There he was joined by Irisa, a young Irathient he raised as his own, and who served as his lone companion in the lawless badlands.

Grant Bowler is no stranger to the Syfy family, having appeared in Chiller’s 2011 zombie opus, Remains, as well as three other major releases: Atlas Shrugged, The City of Guardians and The Killer Elite alongside Robert De Niro, Clive Owen and Jason Statham. Recent credits include playing Richard Burton to Lindsay Lohan’s Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s Liz & Dick. Bowler is no doubt beloved by genre fans for his role as Cooter, the biker werewolf, on HBO’s monster mash-up True Blood, as well as a turn on the sci-fi smash Lost as the mysterious Captain Gault.

An attractive Irathient woman, Irisa is Nolan’s tacit second in command. Smart, independent and feisty, Irisa still struggles with the weight of her unusual upbringing. A drifter since birth, she only stays in Defiance due to the loyalty she feels for Nolan. Nolan has encouraged Irisa to leave behind her traumatic past. He rescued her at a young age, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Stephanie Leonidas is known for her many television appearances, most recently in Whitechapel, Eternal Law, and the BBC’s Dracula, as well as the award winning ITV film for television Wall of Silence. Other film credits include the lead role of Helena in David McKean’s Mirrormask, Luis Llosa’s feature filmFeast of the Goat, Ben Sombogaart’s Crusade in Jeans: A March through Time,Luna and Andrew Douglas’ U Want Me To Kill Him. Stephanie has also appeared on stage in the lead role of Dani in Marianne Elliott’s The Sugar Syndrome at the Royal Court, receiving rave reviews. Most recently, she portrayed Adela in Gadi Roll’s House of Bernarda Alba.

Kenya is the beautiful spitfire who runs the NeedWant, the town’s bar and brothel. Self-assured and dauntless, she has an unwavering devotion to the town that has inexorably woven her into many of its complicated affairs. Growing up, Kenya rebelled by making trouble and embracing her sexuality. When Kenya arrived in Defiance, she took up residence at the NeedWant, eventually becoming its proprietor. She has a keen insight into the needs of others, but a blind spot when it comes to her own emotions.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Mia Kirshner studied Russian literature at McGill University in Montreal while pursuing an acting career in the early 1990s. Kirshner portrayed a young, clairvoyant dominatrix in Deny Arcand’s Love and Human Remains before her memorable turn in Atom Egoyan’s Exotica. In 1995, Kirshner had a supporting role in the Southern coming-of-age tale, The Grass Harp, starring Sissy Spacek and Walter Matthau. She then played the lead opposite Vincent Perez in The Crow: City of Angels and revealed her lighter side with a featured role in the spoof comedy Not Another Teen Movie. In 2001, she appeared as a professional assassin in the action-filled drama 24alongside Kiefer Sutherland. She’s known to many for her role as Jenny in the critically acclaimed series The L Word. She followed that with a turn in Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia.

Amanda Rosewater is the Mayor of Defiance. Every day, she uses her political wits to give this struggling town a chance for survival. Born in New York in 2011, Amanda shouldered a great responsibility at an early age, serving as a stand-in parent for her sister when their mother and father died during the Pale Wars. Adrift in a post-war world, Amanda eventually heard of a town where humans and Votans were attempting to coexist. She traveled to Defiance and accepted a job cleaning the mayor’s office. Despite these humble beginnings, she so impressed then-Mayor Nicolette Riordon that, upon her retirement, Nicky appointed Amanda to finish out her term. Now, Amanda is determined to maintain peace in the community, an ambitious task in this deadly new world.

With chameleon-like abilities to transform from a bubbly blonde to a tortured brunette, actress Julie Benz won a Golden Satellite Award for her role as beloved Rita Bennett on Showtime’s award-winning series Dexter. Benz recurred on the CBS medical drama A Gifted Man, and also starred in the TNT movie Ricochet. She also appeared on ABC’s No Ordinary Family, followed by a stint on Desperate Housewives. Throughout her career, Benz has starred in an array of cult classics including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Roswell, as well as the Steven Spielberg-produced alien abduction miniseriesTaken.

The wife of Datak Tarr, one of the most powerful men in Defiance, Stahma is beautiful and loyal, the perfect picture of a Castithan wife. Beneath the surface, however, lies a dark side that is ready to break from the traditional roles assigned her by her caste.

DatakTarr is the primary figure in Defiance’s underworld, running everything from gambling to weapons smuggling and organized crime. True to his Castithan ways, Datak is always on the lookout for opportunities that allow him to get his hooks into people so he can later manipulate them to his own ends.

Tony Curran rose to fame in the BBC series This Life. Since then, the actor has appeared in a number of major film and television roles, including The Invisible Man, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Guillermo de Toro’s Blade II. Curran is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Jaime Murray was born in London, England and named for Lindsay Wagner’s character in The Bionic Woman. She is best known for playing Stacie Monroe in the BBC series Hustle and Lila Tournay in season two of the Showtime series,Dexter. She has also had recurring roles as H.G. Wells in Syfy’sWarehouse 13, Gaia in the Starz series Spartacus: Gods in the Arena and Olivia Charles in The CW series Ringer.

Rafe McCawley is Defiance’s richest and most powerful human – a mine owner whose family has been in this territory for generations. Raised by a tough-as-nails father, Rafe disobeyed his father’s wishes and enlisted. After the Pale Wars, he took his wife and burgeoning family back to his home of St. Louis, now barely recognizable due to terraforming. He longs for the world as it was before the Votans arrived.

Graham Greene’s screen debut was in 1983’s Running Brave, but it was his Academy Award-nominated role as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film Dances With Wolves that brought him stardom. This role was followed by appearances in such films as Thunderheart, Benefit of the Doubt, and Maverick, as well as the TV series Northern Exposure. Green also acted alongside Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson in the 1995 film Die Hard With a Vengeance and played a Death Row inmate in the Oscar-nominated The Green Mile.

The Alien Races of Defiance

Indogene

The indogenes are a technically-minded race who augment their bodies with cybernetic implants. They value science above all else and make excellent scientists and doctors. Since most Indogenes stayed on the Arks in orbit, they are among the fewest in number of the Votan races on earth.

Irathient

They are among the most common race Votan race on earth. They are a tribal race who pride themselves on their low tech hand-to hand combat skills and are a deeply spiritual race.

Castithan

Catithans are an aristocratic and ethereal race. They perceive themselves as the most important species on Earth and have made use of their cunning intelligence and ambition to excel in social situations. It is rumored that they dominate the leadership in the Votanis Collective. Castithans belong to a rigid caste system that determines tehir social status from birth.

Bottom line is, Defiance is a must see series that could create a whole new generation of cult following for Syfy. Checkout another preview below and dont miss Defiance when it airs April 15th only on Syfy.

Together, these tomes hold the secret of the true Grail, which dates back to the Ancient Egyptian era many years before Christ. Alaïs and those closest to her must battle to protect the secret. Miniseries Review: Labryinth (2012)
Whether or not you believe in a religion, let alone the grail stories, this two part story will hold you spellbound.

Based on the book by Kate Mosse (who has a small cameo and acts as consultant), the story switches between the town of Carcassone in 1209, when the crusaders have arrived, and present day, 2012.

Jessica Brown Findlay, is at the centre in the 13th century story as Alais Pelletier, who let into the grail secret by her father, and is in even more danger as a result. The lord of the town, Viscount Trencavel, portrayed by an almost unrecogniseable Tom Felton, is a close ally to the family.

In present time, Alice Tanner, portrayed by Vanessa Kirby, is a PhD graduate working on an archeological dig. All hell breaks loose when she wanders into a nearby cave and finds a ring and a skeleton.

John Hurt and Tony Curran have a small role each in the present and past parts, respectively. Both are excellent as always.

This is a really well made production, the switching between past and present is seamless, which helps keep the story coherent.

In 1209, newly married Alais is living in Carcassonne, a stronghold of Cathars who have been declared heretical by the Church. Alais and her father are protecting three sacred books that reveal the secret of the Holy Grail from the Crusaders.

Tony Curran: Labyrinth update, Young James Herriot DVD release, In The Dark Half review

  • Labyrinth
Kate Mosse's worldwide bestseller "Labyrinth" is adapted into a miniseries of the same title by writer Adrian Hodges and it has been previewed in a trailer. The story begins as modern-day archeologist Alice Tanner (Vanessa Kirby) finds skeletal remains and a labyrinth-engraved ring in a cave, AceShowbiz said.

She then sees events from 13th century Carcassonne, during which 17-year-old Alais Pelletier (Jessica Brown Findlay) is given a task to protect three hidden books - The Book of Words, The Book of Potions and The Book of Numbers. Together, these tomes hold the secret of the true Grail, which dates back to the Ancient Egyptian era many years before Christ.

As Alais and those closest to her must battle to protect the secret from others, including her cruelly manipulative sister Oriane, Alice faces a race against time to put together the curiously familiar pieces of a jigsaw puzzle representing her long-buried history.

Supporting the epic thriller are the likes of John Hurt, Sebastian Stan, Tom Felton, Katie McGrath, John Lynch and Tony Curran. Ridley Scott and his late brother Tony Scott are among the executive producers of the show, which is directed by Christopher Smith.
There is still no word on which U.S. network that will air the miniseries.

  • In The Dark Half - movie review
"This is a rather over-serious film that never relieves the pressure with real-life comedy or off-handed interaction. Everything is played for full emotional impact, which leaves the actors stuck in one-note performances.
Still, each one is terrific as a wounded, needy person who simply can't reach out to someone nearby. Barden captures Marie's overpowering need to understand life and death long before we begin to understand why. And Curran is terrific as the town pariah whose sad, quiet existence unravels so tragically."

Emun Elliott: filming 'Prometheus' felt like being on another planet

Scots TV hunk Emun Elliott was obsessed with the Alien films — now he’s living the dream in Ridley Scott’s blockbuster Prometheus.

The 28-year-old — best known as gay Ritchie in Comedy Central hit Threesome — is starring alongside Hollywood babe Charlize Theron in the prequel to sci-fi classic Alien.

It also features telly hardman Idris Elba and Inglourious Basterds actor Michael Fassbender. And the big-screen epic — expected to be a massive hit for legendary director Scott — is one of 2012’s most eagerly-anticipated releases.

Alien fanatic Emun, from Edinburgh, plays spaceship pilot Chance — and he was in dreamland the minute he stepped onto the £65million movie’s spectacular set.

Emun admitted: “That was the highlight. I’d seen the Alien movies and it felt like we had these landmark shoes to fill.

“There was a real feeling of anxiousness and trepidation at first, but I remember Charlize saying she was nervous too.

“Once the cameras started rolling though, you realise that it’s just like any other job.

“But yeah, just wandering about in a space suit with a big globe over your head was cool.

“You’d get so far onto these massive sets that you felt like you were actually on another planet or a spaceship.”

Last year, Emun raved about Oscar winner Charlize, 36, in an interview with The Scottish Sun.

He said: “Charlize was lovely, just a proper movie star. She was gorgeous, brilliant and knows exactly what she’s doing.”

But he also struck up a friendship with co-star Idris — famed for his roles in BBC series Luther and US drama The Wire.

Emun revealed: “Idris is not only one of the sexiest men I’ve ever encountered but also one of the coolest. I learned an awful lot working with him.

“I worked primarily with Idris, Michael and Benedict Wong.

“Benedict and I play the pilots Idris plays the captain, so it was a sort of threesome.

“It was straight forward — the director gave us free reign to do whatever we wanted to do and gave us nudges here and there.”

Prometheus hits cinemas in June.

Emun has become a well-known face on telly starring in Threesome, Comedy Central’s first British sitcom. He has also appeared in Sky Atlantic’s fantasy series Game Of Thrones and BBC3 lesbian drama Lip Service.

He played bad-boy architect and womaniser Jay in the raunchy Scots show and viewers saw him exit last month when his character got a new job in London.

Emun joked: “I was hoping I’d leave the show in a more epic and exciting way. I was hoping to fall out of a window mid-orgy, but instead he just says ‘I’m off to London’. Hey-ho.”

In Game Of Thrones his on-screen alter ago had his tongue sliced off. Emun said: “I’d love to return one day but my character lost his tongue so I wouldn’t have any lines. It would be an incredible performance or a ridiculous one!”

A 2005 graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Emun is getting plenty of screen time later this year. Threesome returns for a second series and he will also appear in BBC drama The Ladies’ Paradise.

Next year, the actor returns to the big screen in Filth, the movie based on Irvine Welsh’s novel.

It stars X-Men actor James McAvoy, Braveheart’s Ron Donachie, Harry Potter veteran Jim Broadbent and Billy Elliot’s Jamie Bell.

Emun added: “I’d wanted to work with James since I was at drama school.”

Emun has been snapped up by Ridley Scott again — this time for the film legend’s forthcoming TV sex-fest Labyrinth.

The hunk stars in the historical mini-series alongside Harry Potter baddie Tom Felton, and fellow Scot Tony Curran.

He said: “My character basically goes around sleeping with beautiful women and killing Catholic crusaders on the back of the horse. The director Chris Smith likes to take things to extremes so there’s loads of gore and lots of sex — it was a bit of a dream!”

The show, which airs on Channel 4 later this year, is based on the novel by English author Kate Mosse and boasts Scott as executive producer.

Emun told CultBox Online: “It’s a bestseller, so it’s already got a huge following. I’ve seen a rough cut and it’s massively exciting.”
