Cilla Black’s award-winning comedy plays of the 1970s will soon be released for the first
time on DVD.
Britain’s
chart-topping pop singer made her transition into television in 1968 with her
very own BBC TV variety show “Cilla”. By the mid-1970s and after seven record
breaking seasons at the Beeb, Cilla Black signed a new deal with production
company ATV (Associated Television/ITV). The deal offered Cilla the chance to
dip her toe into the world of situation comedy and her husband Bobby the
position of Executive Producer.
Two series of
comedy plays followed, Cilla’s Comedy Six (1975) and Cilla’s World Of
Comedy (1976) in which Cilla portrayed a range of female roles from Mrs.
Average Housewife (mid-’70s style) to a temp fending off the amorous advances
of her latest boss, from a woman caring for her widowed father to a biology
teacher who’s forced to take stock of her own life. The plays were notably
directed by Les Chatfield (Coronation Street, Juliet Bravo, Duty Free) and
co-starred many stars of the ’70s sitcom elite such as Keith Barron, Richard
Wilson, Leslie Sands and Helen Frazer.
