John Barrowman urges caution about 'Doctor Who' 50th role: "Stay calm"
From Digital Spy:
John Barrowman has tried to manage fans' expectations regarding his potential involvement in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary. The Captain Jack Harkness actor revealed earlier today (March 1) that he has been contacted about the show's anniversary.
Speaking on This Morning, he had said: "I haven't had any information up until just about right now - and all I can say to you is that we're discussing things... that's a total exclusive! You guys are the first to ever hear it."
He went on: "Even yesterday I was giving interviews and I was saying I have heard nothing, and now I can give you a little bit of an exclusive. I've heard something."
However, Barrowman has since seemingly tried to calm fans' excitement, tweeting: "Re 50th I didn't say in what capacity or what medium so stay calm and carry on. Jb."

Siobhan Redmond: Doctor Faustus, and interviews

The Big Interview: Siobhan Redmond
Siobhan Redmond and in Dr Faustus, below.

Even a short time spent with Siobhan Redmond makes you feel that she’d be a very good person to be with if you got lost in the jungle.
She’d somehow manage to keep you laughing as you both grappled with snakes, slapped the bugs out of your hair and pulled leeches off your ankles. Put simply, she’s terrific company, and seems to see the funny side of every situation.
A vastly versatile actress of 30 years experience across everything from regular appearances with the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre of Scotland to long-running roles in The Bill, Holby City, Taggart and as ball-breaking cop Mo Connell in Between the Lines, she says she’s the “pest in the room” at rehearsals who relentlessly asks questions.
“I often wonder where the talking is coming from, then suddenly realise it’s me,” she says, her delivery somewhere between a giggle and a groan. Barely pausing for breath, she goes on: “I like to try and be as clear as possible about what we’re heading towards.
“I never suffer in silence – although some colleagues maybe wish I would. I realise my manners are not what they should be and I should sometimes shut up.”
Despite being so chatty and inquisitive, she says it’s really when the talking about how to do the job stops and the actual doing of it begins that she feels truly at home. Recent times have seen her as Eleanor of Aquitaine in King John and Lady Macbeth in Dunsinane with the RSC. Now she’s in Leeds, rehearsing her part as Mephistopheles to Kevin Trainor’s Faustus in Dr Faustus, directed by Dominic Hill.
It’s a co-production between West Yorkshire Playhouse and Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre, and the contemporary setting comprises three acts of the 400-year-old classical text by Christopher Marlowe plus two specially commissioned acts (three and four) by Irish writer Colin Teevan. The production promises lots of smoke and mirrors, with stage illusions created by magic consultant James Freedman.
Faustus is positioned as a modern day conjurer, whose hunger for notoriety is satisfied at a price when he makes a pact with the Devil (in the guise of Mephistopheles) in order to learn the black arts that will secure his celebrity among the rich and powerful.
“There’s always been argument over whether Marlowe actually did write acts three and four and some evidence that he didn’t, “ says Redmond. “Colin’s writing has brought something new and spellbinding to the piece, casting a different light and contrasting high tragedy with low comedy.”
As for the controversial casting of a woman as Mephistopheles – thought to be a first in this country: “People are entitled to their opinions, and it may upset a some who have a certain idea about the classical play. Faustus was orphaned and brought up by foster parents. He then became an academic, and has never known about women, so making Mephistopheles a woman makes sense. Anyway, in the end he sells his soul for a pig in a poke.
“(Some people) may hate it, but I hope most will come with an open mind. For me, those creatures who are not quite of this world like Mephistopheles are very exciting to play. You need to make them recognisable, yet you also have to believe that they’re from a different place.
“In this version Mephistopheles tells a story, and she is at times mother, sister, lover. She’s Arthur and Martha, she comes in different shapes and forms – and the price I have to pay for all this intense variety is that I get to wear a series of costumes that make me acutely physically uncomfortable.
“But it’s a small price. I’m the luckiest person in the world because I get to dress up every day and play.”

Siobhan Redmond plays devil's advocate with Doctor Faustus
Herald Scotland interview

The lady’s for burning
You'd never confuse her with Clara Bow or Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, but this afternoon Siobhan Redmond can only be described as an It Girl. She’s telling me about the part she’s playing in Doctor Faustus, Christopher Marlowe’s soul-selling tragedy, and she just can’t settle on a gender. “I get to be both Arthur and Martha, which is delightful,” she says. Delightful but hard to pin down.
Breaking with convention, director Dominic Hill has cast the Glasgow-born star of Between The Lines and Holby City as Mephistopheles, the fallen angel tasked with luring the scholarly Doctor Faustus off the straight and narrow. It’s a part normally played by a man and, as she gets to grips with the role, Redmond isn’t able to say whether she’s a boy or whether he’s a girl or – more likely – whether it’s a matter of “yes to all of the above”.
“Demons are not gender specific,” she says at the end of a day’s rehearsal in Glasgow. “But they’re generally known as a boy and, yes, I’m generally known as a girl. That was one of the things that intrigued me. I had been thinking of Mephistopheles as ‘him’ but he ruthlessly exploits his femininity, so I’ve arrived at ‘it’ by default, just to remind myself that it isn’t human and you can’t expect it to conform to a set of gender stereotypes.”
So “it” it is – although she drifts in and out of “he”, “she” and “they” during our conversation. And that’s an ambiguity that suits this charismatic actor just fine. Having played the garrulous Barbs Marshall in Liz Lochhead’s Perfect Days, the manipulative Elizabeth I in Schiller’s Mary Stuart and the obstinate Gruach, aka Lady Macbeth, in David Greig’s Dunsinane (back for another Scottish outing later this year), she is more than up for the challenge of throwing an extra layer of mystique over one of the great roles of English-language theatre.
“The demon would come to you in a way that you would find most palatable,” says Redmond, who studied English language and literature at the University of St Andrews. “This demon doesn’t quite give you what you want, but close enough for you to find it interesting enough to become engaged with.” In the case of the orphaned Faustus, the vision of Mephistopheles as a potential mother figure could be very alluring indeed.
Breaking with convention one step further, this co-production between Glasgow’s Citizens and the West Yorkshire Playhouse is not exclusively the work of Marlowe. Acts one, two and five are as he wrote them in 1592, but three and four are modern-day rewrites. There are stylistic inconsistencies that suggest Marlowe may never have written those two acts in the first place and, as they are also full of satirical references long past their sell-by date, Hill felt justified to bring in playwright Colin Teevan as a 21st-century collaborator.

Kevin McKidd: ebay auction in support of Save The Children

From WetPaint:

One of Kevin's most beloved charities is Save the Children, an organization devoted to — you guessed it! — helping children in need. He's supported the charity for years, and even donated the proceeds from his folk album to it.

Now, he's hosting a charity auction that his fans can take part in!

Now through Monday, February 25, you can bid on items ranging from message cards to keychains to photo frames on eBay. They're all hand crafted items from The Scrappy Tree, and each one is signed by Kevin himself. As of now, it looks like most items are in the $10-20 range.

The proceeds will go to Save the Children's international emergency response campaigns. According to Kevin's website, the funds will help "recovery and life saving support efforts involving USA Hurricane Sandy, Philippine flooding, South Sudan shelter aid, African food and hunger crises, and Haiti earthquake relief, to name a few."

James McAvoy: Macbeth reviews, and 'Neverwhere' cast photo

James McAvoy in Macbeth, Trafalgar Studios, review
Macbeth, starring James McAvoy, packs a powerful punch says Charles Spencer.
4 out of 5 stars

James McAvoy, best known as a film actor, proves a commanding Macbeth, and the relationship with his wife is powerfully caught. The text makes it clear that the couple had a child who died in infancy and McAvoy and Claire Foy as Lady Macbeth suggest both an undertow of grief and the sense that their murderous ambition is some kind of sick compensation for their loss.
At the start it is Foy’s Lady Macbeth who leads the way, like a bossy schoolgirl who has set her heart on becoming head-girl. Unlike his morally blind wife, however, Macbeth knows what murder will cost, and initially at least, has a strong sense of what is right. McAvoy thrillingly suggests a man on the rack of his own guilty mind who learns that the only way to secure his position and silence his conscience is to become inured to atrocity with further killings.
He also does full justice to the haunting poetry of the last act in which Macbeth realises just what he has lost - not least himself and any sense of purpose or meaning in life. It is the reason that Macbeth is a genuinely tragic character and not just a serial killer.

James Cosmo: interview at the Glasgow Film Festival

James Cosmo talks Citadel, Game of Thrones, his career and Scottish film
From STV:
James Cosmo has appeared in some of the country’s best known films including Braveheart, Trainspotting and Highlander, and received considerable acclaim throughout his career including a recent Scottish Bafta for Donkeys.

Speaking at the Glasgow Film Festival, where he had appeared to talk about his career, the 64-year-old Scottish actor revealed to STV about what he thinks set those films apart.
He said that Highlander director Russell Mulcahy had “brought something new to the business”, while having worked with Trainspotting director Danny Boyle on TV before he knew “the quality that Danny would bring to the game”.

Meanwhile Cosmo explained how Braveheart had come at exactly the right time for him, while he was going through a rough patch getting enough work to look after his wife and baby.

Of new film Citadel, an Irish/Scottish co-production by Bl!nder Films and Scotland’s Sigma Films, he spoke effusively about writer-director Ciaran Foy.
After revealing that he chose to work on Citadel because of its “terrific script”, of its claustrophobic nature he added: “It was great fun to do, really good – and by goodness it makes you jump.”

He has also appeared in two of the most acclaimed US TV shows of recent years – Sons of Anarchy and most recently in Game of Thrones, and explained to us how it was to work on those much loved series.

Billy Boyd and John Barrowman in a Dogs Trust advertisement

From Boyd-oh-Boyd:
Swingcats find purr-fect way to help out their canine friends
Scottish girl group enlist stars to help make video to raise money for The Dogs Trust.
A Scottish group called the Swingcats are raising cash for dogs.
All profits of the trio’s new single The One are being donated to The Dogs Trust.
And they persuaded dog-lovers John Barrowman, Lord of the Rings star Billy Boyd and Still Game’s Paul Riley to star in the video.
The song was inspired by singer Alyson Orr’s dog Angus, who died a month ago.
Alyson said: “Angus was a second-hand dog and I wanted to give something back. Many dogs need loving new homes – often after suffering terrible cruelty.”
Once the Swingcats – Alyson, Laura Ellis and Nicola Auld – had finished the song they pulled in some favours to make the video.
Alyson added: “I knew John was a big supporter of the Dogs Trust so when he was in Glasgow doing panto I asked if he’d be willing to help and he gave up his time in between shows.
“Billy is a friend of mine and I also wanted someone to play a traffic warden and asked Paul, who said yes.”

Ewan McGregor: Broadway aspirations, and 'Star Wars' ideas

Ewan McGregor eyeing Broadway debut

Scottish star Ewan McGregor is seriously considering a stint on the Broadway stage - and he'd love the project to be a musical.

The Star Wars actor showed off his singing skills in the movies Moulin Rouge! and Down With Love and he also hit the stage for a 2005 West End revival of hit show Guys and Dolls, in which he played Sky Masterson, and now he's got his sights set on making his New York debut.
McGregor was quizzed about his theatre aspirations during a question and answer session with fans via Twitter.com, during which he replied, "I'm considering options on Broadway... I'd love to do another musical. There's nothing quite like it on stage or in film."

'Star Wars' Spin-Offs: Ewan McGregor totally 'Up For' Obi-Wan movie
Prequel actor rolled with the 'good idea' by adding suggestions of his own.
Last week, when the possibility of "Star Wars" spin-offs and standalone films became a reality instead of nerdy conjecture, minds began racing to figure out which characters from the galaxy far, far away might get the call. There were rumors of a Boba Fett film and the adventures of young Han Solo, but Harrison Ford doesn't exactly fit into that black vest anymore.
Many of the actors from the prequel films, however, are thankfully still close enough in age to their characters to allow a standalone movie. And if we're comparing that list with yet uncovered portions the "Star Wars" mythos, Ewan McGregor certainly springs to mind, and, guess what, he's totally up for it.

MTV News sat down with McGregor and his "Jack the Giant Slayer" co-star Stanley Tucci during a press event for the new film, and the former Obi-Wan Kenobi shared his thoughts on a possible spin-off movie.
"I think it's a good idea," McGregor said of getting his own film. "The only bit that I could get away with doing is after the last one I made, 'Episode III,' before Alec Guinness, there's that period where he's in the desert."
