  • The Politician's Husband
Clips of  The Politician's Husband were shown last night (Saturday) in a BBC Two trailer of various forthcoming programmes. The trailer included a clip of David Tennant's character saying on the telephone (close-up facing the camera) "Rather you than me, love."
A video of the BBC Two Trailer (which includes the clips of The Politician's Husband) has been posted to YouTube.

The Telegraph lists The Politician's Husband in its 'Culture and Arts Things To See in April'. It says that it will air from Monday 22nd April. If that is correct then it means that the first episode of The Politician's Husband will broadcast on the day of the final episode of Broadchurch. If The Politician's Husband is similar to The Politician's Wife then it will have to be in a post 9pm watershed slot. Hopefully BBC Two will broadcast it at 10pm and not 9pm which is the broadcast time for Broadchurch!

James McAvoy: Macbeth reviews, and 'Neverwhere' cast photo

James McAvoy in Macbeth, Trafalgar Studios, review
Macbeth, starring James McAvoy, packs a powerful punch says Charles Spencer.
4 out of 5 stars
James McAvoy and Claire Foy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios
James McAvoy and Claire Foy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios. Photo: Johan Persson
James McAvoy, best known as a film actor, proves a commanding Macbeth, and the relationship with his wife is powerfully caught. The text makes it clear that the couple had a child who died in infancy and McAvoy and Claire Foy as Lady Macbeth suggest both an undertow of grief and the sense that their murderous ambition is some kind of sick compensation for their loss.
At the start it is Foy’s Lady Macbeth who leads the way, like a bossy schoolgirl who has set her heart on becoming head-girl. Unlike his morally blind wife, however, Macbeth knows what murder will cost, and initially at least, has a strong sense of what is right. McAvoy thrillingly suggests a man on the rack of his own guilty mind who learns that the only way to secure his position and silence his conscience is to become inured to atrocity with further killings.
He also does full justice to the haunting poetry of the last act in which Macbeth realises just what he has lost - not least himself and any sense of purpose or meaning in life. It is the reason that Macbeth is a genuinely tragic character and not just a serial killer.

    Greg Hemphill: 'Living With Mother'

Sherlock's Mark Gatiss among the cast of Living with Mother series two

Doctor Who writer joins an all-star cast including Brigit Forsyth, Tom Goodman-Hill and Alison Steadman in the returning Radio 4 comedy

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss will be among the cast of Living with Mother when the programme returns to BBC Radio 4 later this month.

The Doctor Who writer will be joined by Brigit Forsyth, Tom Goodman-Hill, Greg Hemphill, Susan Jameson, Daniel Mays, Linda Robson and Alison Steadman in the second series of Alexander Kirk’s family-based comedy.

Living with Mother, which was first broadcast in 2011, explores the dilemmas faced by men who continue living with their mothers long into adulthood. Each of the new series’ four episodes will offer listeners a 15-minute snapshot of the life of a different family.

In the first episode, Gatiss will play a no-talent wannabe pop-star called Marlon whose mother (Jameson) can’t bear the thought of her son humiliating himself by showcasing his 'singing' on a nationally-broadcast TV talent show.

Linda Robson will appear in episode two as a hypochondriac mum who babies her grown-up son (Mays), while Alison Steadman and Tom Goodman-Hill star in episode three as two characters who conspire to stay in a beach chalet over winter as a means of saving money.

Brigit Forsyth and Greg Hemphill make up the fourth episode’s partnership, respectively playing a fitness fanatic mum and her overweight, couch-potato son.

The first series of Living with Mother earned critical praise when it was broadcast, being described in Radio Times as an "astutely-observed comedy series" in which "easy laughs are replaced with a lip-trembling insight into vulnerability, lack of self-confidence and interdependency."

Living with Mother’s second series will begin on BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday 31 October at 11:15pm.

Alex Salmond's OAP recruit in his bid for Victor-y

Alex Salmon might just have found the perfect recruiting sergeant to persuade Scottish pensioners to vote for independence – grumpy Victor from the BBC sitcom, Still Game

Actor Greg Hemphill – who plays Victor McDade, one half of the iconic Craiglang double act alongside his pal Jack Jarvis, played by Ford Kiernan – has suggested he will be voting ‘Yes’ in the 2014 referendum.

The 42-year-old star has so far refused to be drawn on his views on separation, insisting that “there was a curtain on the polling booth for a reason”.

However, he said on Twitter last week: “Once Scotland votes for Independence, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle will want it too, thereby ridding themselves of the Tories forever.”
The comment was picked up by the Celebs4indy Twitter page, which retweets comments by celebrities who back independence.

Hemphill later predicted that the “great cities of the North” would leave England and join Scotland if the Union was dissolved. He added: “We will forever take the p*** out of them for being Southern Jessies.”

Despite his desire to stay impartial, the actor has made a number of comments on Twitter that appear to show his true colours. When Ultimo bra tycoon Michelle Mone threatened to move to London in the event of a ‘Yes’ vote, he said: “I was going to vote for Scottish independence but now I can’t because Michelle Mone might leave.”

The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists is setting sail for multiplexes soon, and we’ve got our hands on an exclusive clip!

The scene in question features Hugh Grant’s Pirate Captain being welcomed into the home of Charles Darwin (voiced by David Tennant).
The real star of the scene, though, is the ‘manpanzee’ himself. Apes have form when it comes to stealing scenes in movies, and Darwin’s well-trained butler is no exception.
The footage also serves as a good example of the atmospheric sets and insane attention-to-detail conjured up (in miniature) by the hardworking animators.

Tree Fu Tom: Sophie Aldred and David Tennant voice new CBeebies series
Interview with David Tennant about his role as Twigs
Twigs is Tom’s best friend and sidekick – he goes everywhere with him and is the comic heart of the show. This tiny acorn sprite is like the wide-eyed, fun-loving, free-spirited and seriously silly child in each of us.
Could you tell us who you play?

I play Twigs, who is Tom’s best friend. Twigs lives in Treetopolis and he’s a tree sprite. He’s very small, he’s sort of based on an acorn and he can retract himself into an acorn whenever he’s frightened. But he’s a little anarchic, he’s a little crazy and he’s quite loud.
Could you sum up TFT and why parents should encourage their children to watch it?

I think TFT is imaginative, inventive, exciting, really good fun and it looks beautiful. It looks like no expense has been spared and I can’t wait to see all the finished episodes as everything I have seen so far has been a visual feast. It’s an incredible wonderful thing that we have channels like CBeebies that devote so much time and effort and skill to telling wonderful stories.
Why did you decide to take the role?

Animation is a fascinating area from an acting point of view because it’s not really like anything else because you are only providing a portion of the performance. That’s very inspiring and it forces you to do things in a different way – to tell stories through your voice. As an acting challenge it was very appealing.
I think you always want to tell good stories and when you are doing something for children you are always so aware of how formative those stories will be. I was hugely formed by stories I was told as a child whether that was in a book, the cinema, theatre or television and probably television more than any medium is what influenced me as a child and formed my response to literature, story-telling and, therefore, the world around me.
Can you tell us about Tree Fu and Big World Magic?

There are points in every story where Big World Magic is required and Tom gets the viewers to go through moves with him and that sends the magic through to him. The idea being that the real world can influence the Treetopolis world through the Tree Fu moves.
Tree Fu Tom encourages movements designed to help all children particularly including those with Dyspraxia – can you tell us more about that?

I would never have imagined that a programme like this could be used in this way to help combat Dyspraxia. It will be fascinating to see if it does have a positive effect. The children will certainly have a good time trying!
How did you arrive at Twigs’ voice?

It’s sort of my voice but up an octave really. He’s smaller and lighter so the voice had to be higher. Also there’s a thought that for pre-school audiences you want to use higher registers in your voices. I believe that the young audience hears higher voices better.
How do you gauge your performance for the audience?

I feel very un-practiced in performing to an audience this young so I am very happy to be led by other people working on the show. Like getting the level of jeopardy right, what is enough to be exciting but not too much to be alarming. When you’re older you want to be scared because you understand more where the boundaries between fantasy and reality are and I suppose they are more blurred the younger you are. It’s fascinating to work with people who completely understand that audience. I’ve really enjoyed trying to understand that world.
I don’t think I have ever done anything for this age of children before, a pre-school audience. Generally speaking we don’t have vivid memories of that age and what influenced us yet clearly they are hugely formative years and it’s really important that we can create television of a high quality for that audience. I think the shows you remember are from when you were a bit older. But I think the programmes you watch when you are that young, when you are still learning about how the world works are really important. It’s very exciting to be involved in something that speaks to that audience.
Sophie Aldred (who plays Tom) has previously played Doctor Who’s assistant and you have played The Doctor but in this the roles are reversed, how does that feel?

Sophie and I had never met before so we didn’t have any previous dynamic but I suppose that you can infer a dynamic from previous roles that we have played. As an actor you just fit in with whatever the dynamics of the characters are so she plays the hero and I’m the annoying sidekick.
You, Tim, Samantha and Sophie all recorded Tree Fu Tom in a booth together – how was that?

What’s great about the four of us being in a booth together is that you can work off each other and you can be inspired by something that someone else does and you can collectively move something in a different direction.
Who’s the most animated in the booth?

Probably me! I do find it hard not to dance around a bit! Twigs is quite active so it’s hard to contain that. It’s not very helpful in the final edit if you knock a script off but sometimes you just have to go for it!

David Tennant to star in radio drama Love Virtually
The former Doctor Who star will feature opposite Emilia Fox in a tale of email romance.
A wayward email sparks a case of “online adultery” in a new Radio 4 Afternoon Drama starring David Tennant and Emilia Fox.
When Emmi (Fox) mistakenly sends an email to Leo (Tennant), romance quickly blossoms, and the two begin a shared secret life far removed from their day-to-day existences.
The problem is, Emmi is married – but does a virtual affair count as cheating? To what extent does the relationship rely on fantasy? And is it even possible to fall in love with someone you’ve never met?
Tennant fans will no doubt be answering "yes" to that last question as they make a date with David...

Billy Connolly and Brian Cox to star in radio drama

Two of Scotland's top actors, Billy Connolly and Brian Cox, will star in a Christmas Day radio drama.

The pair will play brothers who join forces in a journey across Scotland to trace a childhood sweetheart.

The drama, The Quest of Donal Q by Scots writer David Ashton, is loosely based on the classic Cervantes tale Don Quixote.

It will be broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland on 25 December and repeated on BBC Radio 4 in the new year.

Connolly will play Donal while Cox will star as Sandy, brothers who were separated as children in an orphanage.

Donal is adopted by a rich couple and brought up in California; Sandy remains in Dundee.

Ten years after falling out in a fierce row, Donal returns to ask his brother for help tracing Jeanette, a fellow orphan they both loved, now said to be in dire straits and in need of a "knight in shining armour".

Head of BBC Radio Scotland Jeff Zycinski said it was "fantastic news" to have two of the biggest stars in Scotland coming together.

"This is a lovely Christmas gift for our BBC Radio Scotland audience to enjoy as one of the highlights of this year's fantastic festive line-up of programmes," he said.

Next year BBC Scotland's drama department will deliver about 65 hours of commissions to Radio 4, Radio 3 and Radio 4 Extra as well as BBC Radio Scotland.

Highlights include a Victorian detective drama, McLevy, starring Brian Cox and Siobhan Redmond.

Also planned are productions of two classic American novels, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.

David Tennant to play Robert Louis Stevenson for Radio 4
David Tennant is to star as Robert Louis Stevenson in a BBC drama based on the author’s travel writings and personal letters. The two-part Radio 4 drama, called Stevenson In Love, portrays “significant journeys” the writer made, and how his feelings for a woman who later became his wife affected him on his travels.
In the first part, called 'Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes', the drama follows Stevenson in France. Here he kept a journal that was to become his travelogue from which the drama takes its name. In the second part, 'The Amateur Emigrant', Stevenson catches a steamer to New York and then undertakes a train journey across America, ending in California.
The drama has been written by Mike Harris. Part one will be broadcast on Radio 4 on October 26, with part two on October 27.
The cast also features Lizzy McInnerny.

Just in time for the holidays, BBC is compiling one massive collection in honor of the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, with the release of Doctor Who: The Complete David Tennant Years.
David Tennant first appeared as The Doctor in 2005, and went on to star in three seasons and eight specials as the tenth incarnation of the Time Lord. BAFTA-winner Russell T Davies (Torchwood, Queer as Folk) is lead writer and executive producer and BAFTA-winner Julie Gardner (Torchwood, Life on Mars) is executive producer.

This collection celebrates Tennant’s tenure by bringing together The Complete Second Series co-starring Billie Piper (Secret Diary of a Call Girl) as Rose Tyler, The Complete Third Series co-starring Freema Agyeman (Law & Order: UK) as Martha Jones and The Complete Fourth Series co-starring Catherine Tate (The Office, The Catherine Tate Show) as Donna Noble, all eight specials and two spin-off animated adventures, in a collectible package. Prior to ending his run as the Doctor, Tennant commented: “I’ve had the most brilliant, bewildering and life-changing time working on Doctor Who.”

DreamWorks Pictures’ Fright Night, starring Colin Farrell, arrives onDecember 13, 2011 just in time to take a bite out of the holidays on Blu-ray 3D™, Blu-ray™, DVD, Digital and On-Demand. Inspired by the 1985 gothic horror cult classic and directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl,Mr. Woodcock), all hell breaks loose when High School Senior Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) discovers his charming new neighbor Jerry (Farrell) is a Vampire preying on his neighborhood.
Packed with un-rated bonus features, the Blu-ray release includes a fang-in-cheek mockumentary “Peter Vincent: Swim Inside My Mind,” a hilarious satirical look at David Tennant’s egocentric “rock star” anti-hero character, Peter Vincent; “The Official How to Make a Funny Vampire Movie Guide;” “Squid Man: Extended and Uncut;” “Frightful Facts & Terrifying Trivia;” “Deleted Scenes;” and a “Gag Reel.” Also included is the uncensored “No One Believes Me” music video directed by Fright Night’s director Craig Gillespie and performed by hip hop recording artist Kid Cudi.
Proclaimed, “A Bloody Good Time” by Trey Alexander (Fandango.com), Fright Night features an all-star cast including: Colin Farrell (Horrible Bosses, Crazy Heart), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation), Toni Collette (Academy Award® nominee for The Sixth Sense, and Golden Globe® winner for United States of Tara), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick Ass, Superbad), David Tennant (Dr. Who, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and Imogen Poots (Jane Eyre, 28 Weeks Later).
Charley (Anton Yelchin) is a high school senior who’s on top of the world—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating Amy (Imogen Poots), the most coveted girl in school. But trouble arrives when Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a nice guy––at first. But there’s something not quite right, and no one else, including Charley’s mom (Toni Collette) seems to notice. After his classmates start to mysteriously disappear without a trace, Charlie discovers that there is more to his new neighbor than meets the eye. Now he must do all he can to protect his mom and girlfriend Amy from meeting the same fate as his best friend Ed Thompson (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).
