John Barrowman: 'All Stars' clip and 'Arrow' highlight reel

  • All Stars
From Bleeding Cool:
John Barrowman Is The New Fred Astaire – Clip And Character Posters For All Stars
I’m off to see All Stars tomorrow morning and as soon as the embargo lifts, I’ll tell you what I think of it. It’s the first film by Ben Gregor, and he has good enough of a TV and short film comedy back catalogue to make his debut feature a pretty interesting prospect.
As a taster, here’s a rather smooth clip of John Barrowman doing his best Fred Astaire in one of the film’s stylised fantasy sequences. I was on set the day this was shot and saw it in 3D on the monitors, and there’s some good stereo stuff in the scene – maybe not so much in these shots, but elsewhere during the number.

All Stars opens aceoss the UK on May 3rd.

John Barrowman: 'Arrow' details, radio interviews

  • 'Arrow' star on John Barrowman role: 'He's the biggest threat so far'
Arrow star Stephen Amell has hinted at the future of John Barrowman's villain.

Torchwood star Barrowman's enigmatic character was revealed in the show's latest episode as Malcolm Merlyn, father of Tommy (Colin Donnell).

"He's certainly the most nefarious character we've met so far," Amell told TVLine. "He's obviously the biggest threat that Oliver has, which is ironic, because they've never come together... so far."

In the original comics, the Green Arrow's nemesis is 'dark archer' Merlyn, but Amell refused to confirm if either Barrowman's character or Donnell's Tommy would evolve into the DC villain.

John Barrowman: Arrow reviews and pantomime news

"Arrow" showrunners, star discuss Huntress, Villains & John Barrowman's Mystery Character

As the recent promotional push for Arrow has been telling us, the new CW show is not your average superhero story.

In fact, Oliver Queen isn't technically a superhero at all. The series' protagonist doesn't have superpowers, his enemies don’t have supernatural abilities and his weapon is a bow and arrow. But that's exactly the type of superhero story showrunners Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti want to tell.

Comic Book Resources was invited to attend an Arrow press event at DC Comics' Los Angeles headquarters where Guggenheim, Kreisberg, leading man Stephen Amell and DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns were on hand to answer questions about the debut season of Arrow. One thing they all drove home repeatedly is that the show is grounded in reality to make it accessible to all audience members.

"We want everybody to like this show," Kreisberg explained. "If you've never picked up a comic book, if you have no idea who the Green Arrow is, you have no idea what DC Comics is, you can watch this show, come into this show and really enjoy it. And yet, if you are a huge fan of the comics and Green Arrow, you see enough of the DNA in the comic books and enough of what makes the comic book special."

John Barrowman and The Krankies launch their 'Jack and the Beanstalk' panto

The trio have teamed up three years on the trot for the annual pantomime at the SECC Clyde Auditorium – and they were in hilarious form as they suited up to promote their latest show.

John Barrowman and The Krankies will be appearing this Christmas in Jack and the Beanstalk – with Barrowman taking the leading role of Jack, and The Krankies playing Farmer Trot and Jimmy Trot.

Barrowman and The Krankies took some time out to pose for the press, with Daisy the pantomime cow in tow.

Referencing the infamous swinging “scandal” last year, as they were taking direction from photographers Ian from The Krankies joked: “Slip his chopper between your fingers – where have I heard that before?”

Special effects will feature heavily in the latest production, with brand-new surprises including a 3D Giant, and a journey through the giant’s castle.

The three stars of the show were joined by children with Down’s syndrome who receive support from Down’s Syndrome Scotland, one of John’s chosen charities.

Jack and the Beanstalk runs at SECC Clyde Auditorium from Saturday December 15 to Sunday January 6, 2013.

Tickets, priced from £12.00, can be booked on 0844 395 4000 or online at www.ticketSOUP.com.

Hotly tipped amongst the US press, Arrow was named by Entertainment Weekly as one of the new dramas to watch this autumn. With comic book adaptations being responsible for three of the summer’s biggest blockbusters, Arrow looks set to follow suit in the phenomenon.

    • John Barrowman's Torchwood book influence

John Barrowman hopes his new book will inspire the next series of 'Torchwood'The 45-year-old actor - who co-authored 'Torchwood: Exodus Code' with his sister Carole and plays Captain Jack in the series - is hopeful the BBC might take notice of the tome based on the show and use it in the next run of the 'Doctor Who' spin-off programme.

He said: ''I had the idea, but Carole is also a huge sci-fi fan, she loves 'Torchwood'. We went to BBC books and BBC worldwide and I said I'd love to do it.

''Nobody knows Jack better than myself and the team that helped to create him''.

''Together we've also written one of the comic scripts for 'Torchwood'. That could be the next series or it could be a movie. That's me talking - not anyone from the BBC - but that would be my dream''.

John is now starring in new US series 'Arrow' based on DC's 'Green Arrow' comics, which he promises will soon be screened in the UK.

In the programme John plays cryptic character 'The Well Dressed Man', and he admits he loves playing a bad guy.

He said: ''I'm not allowed to tell you any more about him except that he's well dressed. He's a pivotal bad guy character that's going to be typical in the show.''

''I got to play a baddie on 'Desperate Housewives', so this is kind of another step into it. It's really nice to play a baddie.''

    • Torchwood: Exodus Code coverage
The writing partnership of John and Carole Barrowman have been out and about this week promoting their new, Torchwood-based novel Exodus Code.

Speaking on ITV1's This Morning on Monday, John said:

I had the idea, and also Carole's a huge sci-fi fan, she loves Torchwood. We went to BBC Books and BBC Worldwide and spoke with Russell (T Davies) and sent him the draft, and I said I'd love to do it. And to be honest with you, nobody knows Jack better than myself and Russell and the rest of the team who helped create us.

A little time has passed, but we do reference the last series, Miracle Day. This is what's going on afterwards. We've written Exodus Code specifically to either be lifted from the book - if it were, that could be the next series, it could be a movie - that's me talking, not anyone from the BBC, but that would be my dream.
On missing Torchwood in general, he said:
Of course I do, Jack changed my life, the fans have changed my life, and this book is dedicated to all the fans, and I've always said, if I'm asked to play Jack again of course I would - I would do it at the drop of a hat, it's an amazing character to play!
This Morning is available to watch in the UK until next Monday on the ITV Player (38:05).

Later, he and his sister featured on BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, where he spoke a little more on his motives behind the collaboration:

It's been over a year now since Miracle Day. Again, we haven't been told "no" it's not going to happen ever again, but we haven't been told "yes", and consequently that's why I spoke to Carole and we spoke to the BBC. I wanted to keep Jack alive, and that's why we wrote the book.
Carole spoke about feedback from the show's creator, Russell T Davies:
What was really nice was we had to go through all sorts of levels of approval as you can imagine with the BBC and so on, and Russell had to read it, and one of the nice things was when I got an email off my editor saying that Russell really liked the balance between the personal and the big save the world under the world sci-fi thing, he really liked the way we had captured that balance. That meant more to me than the fact that John liked it!
The interview segment can be listened to via the Steve Wright in the Afternoon site.

The couple appeared on ITV1's Loose Women on Thursday, where John explained the writing process between the two:
The collaboration works in the way that we sit down together and we work through the outline, we work through character-building, we work through the imagination of the whole story; we record it all, Carole spends a lot of time with me, but she does the hard work, I do not write it - she goes away, she does all the writing, she's got the gift of putting the word into form on the page, and I will not take credit for because I cannot do it.
Carole talked about writing for a character that was essentially her brother:

The one thing we did do in this book we really brought back the Jack with the sense of humour and the sexy Jack who's got the swagger and he's a little roguish. For me, the hardest part about writing that was when we were writing some of the sexy scenes and it would be like eurgh!
Loose Women is available to watch in the UK until next Thursday via the ITV Player (16:00).

Red Carpet News TV caught up with the couple for the book launch at London's Forbidden Planet on the 19th September, and asked John about the potential for more Torchwood on the screen:

    • Torchwood: Exodus Code - review
    Release Date: 13 September 2012
    368 pages | £16.99 (hardback)/£16.00 (audiobook)
Authors: John Barrowman and Carole E Barrowman
    Publisher: BBC Books

John Barrowman’s ongoing quest to be a sort of Saturday night renaissance man continues. As well as his acting, presenting and singing careers, he can now add “novelist” to his CV. Exodus Code, co-written with sister Carole, is his second book this year (the first, Hollow Earth, being a standalone Young Adult novel).
It’s a Jack-centric tale, set in the aftermath of the Torchwood gang’s recent American adventure. While the rest of the world is recovering from Miracle Day, Gwen is down in the dumps. Confined to the house with baby Anwen, she flips out and attacks Rhys. She’s not the only one feeling a bit off; hundreds of women around the world are having violent breakdowns. The answer may lie in an event from Jack’s past… Yes, again.
This is clearly intended to be Torchwood‘s first “event” book, and it largely succeeds. With a globe-trotting storyline that encompasses all the surviving regulars, it’s easy to imagine this as the show’s fifth season. The writing is competent and crammed with references sure to please hardened ‘woodies.
It takes an age to get going, mind. The first part, where Jack crashes a biplane then lolls around tripping his tits off for 90 pages is a bit of a chore, and the whole book is in need of a good trim. It’s frequently daft and cheesy, and there are some inevitable Garth Marenghi-isms, with numerous characters gazing lustfully at Jack, but hey, that’s Torchwood.

    People Roundup: John Barrowman
John Barrowman has popped up in the news a bit, recently, covering both his career and personal ambitions.

Talking about other shows he'd like to do in America, the actor said: "I would love to be on one of those wonderfully edgy cable TV series like True Blood or The Walking Dead.". And "I’d like to do a North American version of this British TV series of mine (Tonight's The Night), where people’s performance dreams come true." [Toronto Star, 10 Aug 2012]

Speaking of which, the actor will join the cast of a new comic book-based action drama series Arrow, which kicks off in the Autumn. His character is under wraps at present, described only as a "well-dressed man who is as mysterious as he is wealthy". [Entertainment Weekly, 15 Aug 2012]

One show he might well consider would be the revival of hit American soap Dallas: "My motto is that I only ever do programmes that interest me rather than doing them for money. It always comes across better if your heart and soul are in it. Since I was a kid, Dallas was part of my growing up and I even wrote about it in my first autobiography. On a Friday night, as a family, everything would stop at 9pm and we would sit and watch Dallas." The actor will be presenting a behind-the-scenes show, John Barrowman's Dallas on Wednesday evenings on Channel 5. [Express, 26 Aug 2012]

Another appearance next week for the actor, this time as a guest on G4's Attack of the Show!, whose host Candace Bailey he worked alongside during G4's Comic-Con earlier this year. [BroadwayWorld, 20 Aug 2012]

John Barrowman to be replaced by younger Captain Jack in Doctor Who anniversary episode?
Looks like naughty Captain Jack could be Doctor Who’s new version of River Song. Whispers from a well placed source tell us that 2013 will see the appearance of a young Jack Harkness. Writers are setting up the possibility of the characters involvement in the 50th anniversary without it becoming burdened by difficult current Torchwood continuity brought on by it’s last series and the question of John Barrowman actually being available now he is working in the USA more and more.

It would also make sense where the Doctor/Jack timeline is concerned. With Jack’s memory loss in later life he wouldn’t remember the Doctor the ‘first’ time they met (when he was the Ninth Doctor,) and he wouldn’t remember the ‘real’ first time they met because it would not happen until he was the Eleventh. It would make for a reverse River story with the Doctor now in River’s situation. Confusing, yes, but Moffat loves to cause confusion.
Just one problem: who would be capable to pull of a new version of a part made so legendary by John Barrowman?

John Barrowman joins cast of Arrow
John Barrowman has joined the cast of Arrow. The Torchwood star will take on a leading role in the CW's new show about superheroes, which will concentrate on the exploits of billionaire Oliver Queen - aka 'The Green Arrow' - who fights crime with his archery skills.

According to Entertainment Weekly, John will play a ''well-dressed man who is as mysterious as he is wealthy ... he is an acquaintance of the queen family and a prominent figure in Starling City''. His character has not been named and insiders claim the 45-year-old star could be set to take on the role of deranged Stanley Dover, who is obsessed with black magic.

John's casting comes after he shot the pilot for another US TV series, Gilded Lilys - which is being billed as America's answer to Downton Abbey. He plays Julius Ashford Lily in in the period drama, which has been commissioned by ABC. It tells the story of the first luxury hotel built in New York in 1895 and John's character is described as the ''favourite son and golden boy'' of the Lily family, whose financial and social fortunes are undermined by a scandal. Gwyneth Paltrow's actress mother Blythe Danner has also been cast in the show, as has 'Mildred Pierce' actor Brian O'Byrne.

John Barrowman interviews ‘Game of Thrones’ author George R.R. Martin
Fandoms collide: Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin spoke to Torchwood star John Barrowman at Comic-Con, and the video interview is online now!
The interview was done at Comic-Con and released a few weeks ago, but Martin thought it was noteworthy enough to write about recently on his blog to share it with his fans.

In the video, Martin talks about his first Comic-Con and his favourite comics, and they discuss being fans while being unable to walk around the convention without being mobbed. They also go over some of the things we’ve heard before, like how Martin was originally inspired by turtles and why Tyrion is his favourite character. On season 3, Martin won’t give anything away but does warn book fans that there are changes coming: “I kill a lot of characters, [the showrunners] kill even more.” Well, that’s just terrifying, right guys?! The interview was done with G4.
