Kurt Sutter's brilliant FX series Sons of Anarchy is set to return in a few weeks and today we have a round up of promos and a behind-the-scenes look at the fifth season.  The outlaw motorcycle club action/drama series follows a Hamlet-esque tale about family, murder, betrayal, and revenge, which often leads to tragedy, making for one of the most anxious and engrossing shows on cable.  Creator and showrunner Kurt Sutter has steered the ship for the series with passion and heart, creating a cast of characters that can be equally loved and despised at the same time.

The show stars Charlie Hunnam (PACIFIC RIM), Ron Perlman, Katie Segal, Maggie Siff, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Ryan Hurst, Theo Rossi, and Dayton Callie, with season 5 guest stars Danny Trejo, Harold Perrineau (LOST), Jimmy Smits, Ashley Tisdale, and Joel McHale.

Tom Urie: interview

River City star Tom Urie opens his heart about conquering weight demons

Big Bob says he has beaten booze and cigarette addiction and is now determined to lose weight.

River City star Tom Urie has decided it’s time to address the elephant in the room. And the Oyster Cafe. And The Tall Ship. And the ticket booth at the Shieldinch subway stop.

That elephant, by his own admission, is him.

Tom has conquered alcoholism and his addiction to nicotine but now faces an even bigger challenge – losing weight.

The 43-year-old actor and musician has become one of Shieldinch’s most popular residents since he joined the BBC Scotland soap two years ago as Big Bob O’Hara.

He’s stopped by fans in the street to talk about storylines such as Bob’s marriage, his relationship with his battle-axe mother and the pain of being the dad of a still-born child.

The most obvious talking point, though, is never addressed.

But Tom believes all that’s about to change now the River City writers are putting Big Bob’s life in jeopardy with a cardiac arrest.

By doing so, they might just be saving Tom’s.

Paisley-born Tom has opened his heart to the Daily Record in his most candid interview ever, revealing his alcoholism for the first time.

He hasn’t touched a drop in over a decade and admits he “was mental with it”.

He said: “One day I had one of those hangovers where I said, ‘Never again’. And I didn’t, ever again.

“Beer was my drink, but I don’t miss it. I do miss a cigarette, though. If there was a nuclear bomb on the way, I’d have a cigarette.

“The smoking was a battle, the drinking was a battle.

“Those things got out of control and now this issue (his weight) has as well. So I’m treating this the same way.”

Tom admits he has always been overweight.

He said: “People have been on at me about my weight since I was a wee boy. My brother was a football referee and is still a very keen golfer. My sister is a football coach and was a PE teacher.

“But I wouldn’t go out and play sports. I’d prefer to sit in and watch Grease.”

Ewan McGregor: 'The Impossible' trailer and stills

Full Trailer and New Stills from 'The Impossible'
Summit Entertainment have released the first trailer for their new movie The Impossible which stars Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland. It’s directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.

The trailer (embedded below) is hard-hitting stuff but is an amazing true-life story about a family who got caught in the Asian tsunami on December 26th 2004. It probably gives a bit too much away but I’m really intrigued to see the movie in full. The film also stars Geraldine Chaplin, Marta Etura, Oaklee Pendergast and Samuel Joslin.

Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her. Based on a true story, THE IMPOSSIBLE is the unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, THE IMPOSSIBLE is a journey to the core of the human heart.

The Impossible is released in the US December 21st on limited release and in the UK 4th January.

James McAvoy impresses Irvine Welsh in 'Filth'

James McAvoy 'absolutely amazing' in 'Filth'
Author Irvine Welsh has described James McAvoy's performance in his latest film as "absolutely amazing."

The film, which is adapted from Irvine's best-selling novel of the same name, sees the Scottish star play a drug-addicted and misogynistic detective sergeant named Bruce Robertson.

Irvine, who also penned Trainspotting, added that: "It's just one of the greatest acting performances I have ever seen, I think he's better than Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. He is absolutely electric and is right into the character. It's a fantastic emotional performance."

Filth, directed by Jon S Baird, also stars Jamie Bell, Alan Cumming, Jim Broadbent, Imogen Poots and Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt.

Whilst Irvine is currently promoting the DVD release of Ecstacy, Filth is set to be released in 2013.

Denis Lawson in 'New Tricks'

BBC One sets première sate for ‘New Tricks’ season 9
The ninth season of BBC One’s long running crime drama series New Tricks will première on Monday August 27th at 9pm, it has been announced.

New Tricks was created by Nigel McCrery & Roy Mitchelland and follows a group of retired police officers, who are brought back into the fold as part of UCOS (Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad), a unit dedicated to solving cold cases.

The drama series stars Alun Armstrong, Denis Lawson, Dennis Waterman, James Bolam and Amanda Redman. The show’s upcoming ninth season, which runs 10 episodes, is poised to be one of change with Bolam leaving the series in the opening episodes and Denis Lawson joining the main cast as Steve McAllister.

In the opening episode of season 9, titled A Death In The Family, Jack Halford deals a devastating blow to the UCOS team by announcing that he’s quitting. But before the team – Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman, Brian Lane and Gerry Standing – can question the reasons behind his decision and persuade him to stay, shadowy Whitehall Intelligence figure Stephen Fisher arrives with one of his secret cases, the unsolved murder of a woman dating back 100 years, giving them just 24 hours to solve it. Will the team run out of time on the case and in changing Jack’s mind?
