Song benefits homeless LGBT yout
Openly gay singers - including Alan Cumming - remake an old favorite

David Raleigh, Alan Cumming and Ari Gold recently recorded a remake of Dionne Warwick’s “That’s What Friends Are For” to benefit the Ali Forney Center, a New York City shelter for homeless LGBT youth. The song was originally written as a tribute to people living with AIDS in the 1980s – and performed by Warwick, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight. But as part of the Friends Project, proceeds from the new iTunes download help fund the center’s mission to reach out to gay, lesbian and transgender youth who are at risk living on the streets.

First trailer for Lincoln assassination drama "The Conspirator" online

Robert Redford helms the James McAvoy starrer The Conspirator, which follows the arrest and trial of Mary Surratt (Robin Wright) after her involvement as a co-conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September 2010, The Conspirator is scheduled to hit cinemas in the Spring.

Kevin McKidd reveals details of "Grey's Anatomy" musical episode

For those of us familiar with memorable Grey's Anatomy music selections from the past six-plus seasons, the show's musical episode is sure to bring back fond memories.

The episode will feature songs made popular by the series, like The Fray's "How to Save a Life" and Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," both featured prominently in Season 2.

Kevin McKidd reveals that he's involved in both of those numbers, as well as singing Gomez's "How We Operate," from "Deterioration of the Fight or Flight Response."

Dougray Scott interview on set of 'United'

Dougray Scott talks to Barbara Hodgson on the set of a new drama about the Munich air disaster filmed in the North East.

It was a defining moment in football history. When a plane carrying Manchester United players crashed on its third take-off attempt on a slush-covered runway in Munich in February, 1958 it brought to a tragic end the best team the great Matt Busby was ever to manage.

Most people know about the tragedy in which eight of the young, hugely talented players – nicknamed the Busby Babes – died.

But what most people are less familiar with is the story of its aftermath: the survivors’ struggle with guilt and terrible injuries and a lack of desire ever to play football again.

A young Bobby Charlton was among the survivors, as was Busby himself, and now their side of the tragedy is the focus of a new feature-length BBC drama, United, made in the region with the help of £150,000 investment from Northern Film & Media.

It stars Dougray Scott – who’s made quite a name for himself in America with roles in Mission Impossible ll and Desperate Housewives – as Busby, and former Dr Who David Tennant as trainer Jimmy Murphy, while talented young Skins actor Jack O’Connell joins the Scotsmen in a lead role as Ashington-born Charlton.

James McAvoy Says He Knows Nothing About Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Mountain Of Madness,’ Yet

Despite being rumored to be in a showdown with Tom Cruise for the lead role in Guillermo Del Toro‘s upcoming 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft‘s “At The Mountain Of Madness” and even being touted as the early studio favorite, James McAvoy has now revealed he’s heard nothing regarding the Del Toro project let alone anything about an offer to take the lead role of Dyer.

“Not at all, not at all,” said McAvoy, responding to questions of an approach by Del Toro and company. “I don’t know anything about the story, but he’s an amazing director. I would be very lucky to be able to work with someone like that one day.”

Karen Gillan, David Tennant attend Radio Times party

The annual Radio Times Cover Party took place in London on Tuesday evening (18 January). The party celebrates the array of stars to have been given the spotlight on the cover of Radio Times over the past 12 months, and Karen was there for her The Pandorica Opens issue from June 2010, while David, who also hosted the event, featured on a cover for his role in the 4-part drama Single Father back in October.

David Tennant to appear at British Comedy Awards

On Friday night (21 Jan), Jonathan Ross tweeted at about 5.15pm "Just came off the phone with the marvelous Mr David Tennant -one of the guests at the Comedy Awards tomorrow night!"

The British Comedy Awards are an annual awards ceremony which celebrate notable comedians and entertainment performances of the previous year. The Awards started in 1990 and this year are being hosted by Jonathan Ross. They are being held at O2 in Greenwich, London.

The British Comedy Awards are broadcast from 9pm until 11.05pm tomorrow evening on Channel 4 (U.K.) and are repeated from 11pm until 1.05am on Sunday evening. (Both screens are repeated an hour later on Channel 4 + 1.) There is also a programme called The British Comedy Awards: Live Lock-In from 11pm until 12.05am on E4 tomorrow (Saturday) evening.

Samuel Goldwyn Films Acquires 'There Be Dragons'

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to Roland Joffé’s There Be Dragons, which stars Dougray Scott as a journalist investigating a 70-year-old mystery in Spain.

The ensemble cast also includes Wes Bentley, Charlie Cox, Olga Kurylenko, Derek Jacobi and Rodrigo Santoro.

Produced by Ignacio Gomez-Sancha, Joffé and Ignacio Núñez, the film will be released May 6.

James McAvoy - First look at the new X-Men film First Class

Nu Image Sets March Start For 'Playing The Field' With Gerard Butler

Nu Image/Millennium has committed to a March start date for Playing the Field, the Gabriele Muccino-directed film that will star Gerard Butler. In the Robbie Fox-scripted comedy, Butler plays a retired world famous soccer star who tries to rebuild a relationship with his son and ex-wife by coaching his kid's soccer team. While soccer is a hands-free sport, the mothers of the other kids can't keep their hands off the coach, which imperils his plan. Jonathan Mostow, Kevin Misher, Heidi Jo Markel, Butler and Alan Siegel are producing. Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Avi Lerner are executive producers. The film was developed under the title Slide, when the protagonist was a baseball coach. Butler and Muccino came aboard after the script was switched to soccer, but it languished until the Nu Image/Millennium guys stepped up.

Coriolanus is sole British production in competition at next month's Berlin film festival

The big-screen Coriolanus, which marks Ralph Fiennes's debut as a director, was today confirmed as the sole British production in competition at next month's Berlin film festival. The modern-day interpretation was shot in Belgrade by the cinematographer Barry Ackroyd, who last worked with Fiennes on the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker. Fiennes stars in the title role as the loyal soldier turned vengeful exile, while his supporting cast includes Gerard Butler, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave.

David Tennant - RSC costume sale / Australia documentary

The Royal Shakespeare Company is to sell thousands of its costumes worn by actors including David Tennant and Sir Ian McKellen.

More than 10,000 items will go on sale next month, including shirts, hats, shoes, Egyptian head-dresses and a variety of military uniforms, jewellery and other accessories.

Among the garments up for sale are the soldiers's tabards and chain-mail from the RSC's 1984 production of Henry V starring Kenneth Branagh which later featured in Mel Gibson's film Braveheart, a selection of pieces worn by Sir Ian in The Seagull and King Lear and several items worn by Tennant in the 2008 production of Love's Labour's Lost.

Alistair McArthur, the RSC's head of costume, said: "We have items for sale from every area of the wardrobe, including costumes that first made their debut on stage back in the 1970s and 80s.

"The sale will include costumes designed by top theatre designers like Deirdre Clancy and our own Olivier Award winning Tom Piper.

"With many items starting at just £3, we hope that people will take the opportunity to come along and purchase a piece of theatre history."

David Tennant is narrating a drama-documentary called The Father of Australia which has the tentative air date of Wednesday 26th January on BBC2.

It is described as:
"Lachlan Macquarie, born into poverty on a small Hebridean island, rose to become Governor - absolute ruler - of the British colony that would become Australia. He and his wife, Elizabeth - Australia's first Power Couple - set a notorious penal colony on course to become a modern nation. Macquarie was brought down by powerful enemies in the colony. Yet, two and a half centuries after his birth, he's an Australian hero."
Drama-documentary starring Clive Russell as Lachlan Macquarie, and Julie Wilson Nimmo as Elizabeth.

John Hannah won't return as Inspector Rebus

He was the first actor to bring Scotland's most famous fictional detective to life, but John Hannah has ruled himself out of the running should Inspector Rebus make a comeback to our TV screens.

The popular lawman, created by Scots writer Ian Rankin, could be in line for a return in one last novel after Rankin hinted at a possible literary revival at the end of last year.

But East Kilbride-born actor John, who played the detective before Ken Stott took over the role, reckons his falling-out with Rebus broadcasters STV last time round would kibosh any idea of his return as the character on TV screens. Well, that and the fact that most diehard fans hated him in the role...

With Some Friends to Help, a Songwriter Reveals His World


The theatre songs of the up-and-coming composer Lance Horne, were recently performed in concert by a cast of his friends, including Alan Cumming.

Alan, who wrote the lyrics to “Next to You,” a naked, shamed-faced confession about returning home from a night of carousing to the comforting arms of an uncomplaining lover, sang it as though he were reliving the previous night’s follies.

David Tennant: Shakespeare and Tolkien

David Tennant and Catherine Tate confirmed on 'BBC Breakfast' on 8th January that they will be starring as Benedick and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing at the Wyndhams Theatre from 16th May to 3rd September 2011.

David Tennant is once again rumoured to be involved in The Hobbit. This time, a fansite 'reports' on Twitter that he has joined the cast in the role of King Thranduil, King of the Sindarin Elves. IMDB still shows his casting as 'rumoured' and there has been no official confirmation.

John Barrowman returns to Torchwood

Following his success in the lead role of the panto 'Aladdin' in Glasgow, John Barrowman has started filming in the US on the new series of "Torchwood" (Torchwood: Miracle Day).

There is no news on the filming from his official website, but @BBC_Torchwood, the Twitter account for the official production office of the show, has recently posted several updates from the set.

No UK broadcast date yet for South Riding

The BBC has still to announce a broadcast date for "South Riding", starring Anna Maxwell Martin, David Morrissey and Douglas Henshall. In their "Coming Soon" section they state that it will be broadcast 'later this year'.

However, PBS has announced that the drama will be shown on Masterpiece Classics on May 1st, May 8th and May 15th 2011 at 9pm.

Hello post

Given the current demands on my ever-dwindling free time, I hadn’t planned on taking on another project this year, but when I read Saba’s farewell post, I was prompted to volunteer. This blog has been a wonderful source of information over the last three years, and I felt that it would be a great shame to see it discontinue. I have therefore offered to take over, and I only hope that I can do so in a manner that will uphold this blog’s excellent reputation.

To begin with, though, I will need to make some small changes in order to manage the blog, the Facebook page, and the Twitter account.

First of all, the most noticeable change will be the posting of updates that include several items of news rather than one, although I will maintain the tradition of posting about each actor individually.

Secondly, I will need to pare down the number of accounts followed on Twitter, purely for time-management purposes. I hope that no-one will be offended if they suddenly find themselves unfollowed by @ScottishActors; it’s nothing personal, but simply that I don’t have time to read through the timefeed of over 960 fellow tweeters!

Thirdly, I will need your help, dear reader, in finding new sites and blogs etc that are dedicated to our wonderful Scottish Actors. If you find any that are not already listed in the ‘Links’ on the right hand side of this page, please let me know.

Finally, I would like to thank Saba for creating and maintaining this excellent blog, and for helping me take these first tentative steps in her shoes. She’s a tough act to follow, but I hope I can make her proud.

Farewell post

I'm very sad that I have to write this, but this is going to be my final post on the blog. I hadn't planned on doing this so early in the year, but I realize that I can no longer post updates because of work. It's oddly painful to write this since this blog has been around for three years and I have enjoyed working on it.

I want to thank everyone who has stopped by to read or leave a comment. Thanks for all your tips and your support. I will miss interacting with people most of all. That's the thing about blogging. Eventually it becomes more about the community than the content. Which is why this is so hard to do.

Ewan McGregor has reportedly been cast as Captain Paul Wilson, Greenpeace activist and founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The real-life Wilson revealed that Ewan will likely be the star of Ocean Warrior which begins shooting later this year in Australia:

The making of this movie has been a project in Hollywood since 1981 when Tony Bill first bought the rights from me for Warner Brothers. The option rights have been purchased every year but now finally it looks promising, with a written script and serious pre-production work. Over the years a number of actors have requested to play my part including Sean Penn, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aiden Quinn, Rutger Hauer, Clive Owens etc. As of now it looks like Ewan McGregor. I think he will do a good job, although I would love to see long time Sea Shepherd supporter Christian Bale take the part. As for a leading lady my favourite actress has always been Sophie Marceau, but the choice is not mine unfortunately. [Bleeding Cool]
