James McAvoy Discusses a Possible "X-Men: First Class" Sequel

Now that director Matthew Vaughn's X-Men prequel X-Men: First Class is in theaters, speculation over a sequel can only increase while this weekend's box office is tallied. Vaughn has already expressed interest in helming a sequel, explaining an idea for a sequel that would include the X-Men in the JFK assassination. All it would take for a sequel is for the movie to be a success.

James McAvoy, who plays Professor X in First Class, told The LA Times that while he hopes a First Class sequel is made "because they found a story they like," the actor admits that he has ideas about what should happen in a sequel.

While the exact plot of X-Men: First Class remains secret, the film centres on how friends Professor Charles Xavier (Scottish actor James McAvoy stepping into Patrick Stewart's shoes) and Erik Lehnsherr (German actor Michael Fassbender filling the role played by Ian McKellen in the earlier films) fall out and become arch enemies.

Updates on 'X-Men: First Class'

Producer Bryan Singer talked to Harry Knowles over at Ain't It Cool News and gave a few updates on James McAvoy's role in X-Men: First Class. He also confirmed a few things about production, namely that the first look at costumes and production design will be unveiled in "about a month" and he also re-confirmed the August 31 shooting start date in the UK.

...the film takes place in the 1960's. John F Kennedy is the President of the
United States. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are on TV doing marches. There
is a spirit of a hopeful future that was prevalent in that time. We will see how
Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr met - and how they dreamt of a future with Mutant
& Human kind. They're going to be in their late twenties. Xavier -
as played by James McAvoy will not be in his wheelchair to begin the film - but
we will see how he wound up in a wheelchair. I asked if McAvoy would have a nice
shiny chrome dome - and folks. We're going to see Professor X when he still had
hair. We'll see McAvoy and Fassbender's Magneto formulate what it is they are
attempting by creating the X-MEN.

Now Bryan wanted us to know
this is not the conventional FIRST CLASS comic - but rather a new beginning for
X-MEN. Set in the 60s - Vaughn is technologically inspired by JAMES BOND's tech
of the time. The costumes will be far more comic bookish than we've seen
before...

...Looks like filming will begin with Xavier at Oxford
University in the 60s. And Bryan is excited that the film is going to have a
much more international feel than the prior X-MEN movies. [Harry Knowles]

'X-Men: First Class' updates

X-Men: First Class, starring James McAvoy is scheduled for a June 2011 theatrical release, and some scenes will reportedly be shot in Michigan. The West Michigan Film Office posted a bulletin stating that 20th Century Fox is scouting locations in Michigan.

"A location scout is seeking out areas with a 1960's, South-American or Central American island feel for the next X-Men movie, 'X-Men: First Class.' In particular, he needs to find café and bar locations, evoking the Argentinian feel of Bariloche, and an Art Deco Cafe or restaurant overlooking a body of water. Additionally, the movie calls for a Miami styled harbor for yachts. If you know of any locations that seem to match a description, please contact our office."

Michigan Live says that "if you know of any such spots where mutants might fit in, contact Rick Hert at the WMFO: rick@wmta.org." Location scouting is also apparently in preliminary stages and probably in a "limited capacity." Most of the filming though, will likely be in London this September.

There are also a few casting rumours - Michael Fassbender is being considered for the role of Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto and Rosamund Pike might be up for Emma Frost.

James McAvoy to play Professor X in 'X-Men: First Class'

James McAvoy has been cast as a young Professor X/Charles Xavier in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. 20th Century Fox has set a June 3, 2011 release. Shooting is scheduled to begin this summer in London.
According to Fox, “First Class” will “chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.” [Heat Vision]
