John Barrowman to join Desperate Housewives?

Dougray Scott was on a few seasons ago so this would be awesome:

JOHN Barrowman is in talks with Desperate Housewives producers to nab a part on the show.

The Torchwood star revealed he was about to meet up with bosses in LA to discuss the role during a chat with DJ Chris Moyles on his Radio 1 Breakfast Show today.

The 42-year-old exclaimed: "I probably shouldn't say this but I've got a meeting with the execs of Desperate Housewives.

"Can you believe it, I'm going to be a Desperate Housewife!"

The America actor didn't say what the part entailed. [The Sun]

The Men Who Stare at Goats gets a release date

There's more release date news today with the announcement that The Men Who Stare at Goats will open on November 6, 2009. The film has also been added to the Venice Film Festival line-up, but it will be out of competition.

The film, starring Ewan McGregor is based on Jon Ronson's novel of the same name and focuses on soldiers trained to fight with paranormal powers.

What I find really interesting about this news is the fact that Overture is distributing The Men Who Stare at Goats and it was Overture who announced yesterday that Law Abiding Citizen was being moved to an October 2009 release date. Moving two films into the middle of awards season in the same week seems pretty confident to me.

Sir Sean Connery to come out of retirement?

Sean Connery will narrate a film about war veteran, Ken McGinley's fight against the military. McGinley won a landmark case when he was allowed to "sue the British Ministry of Defence on behalf of thousands of servicemen who were exposed to nuclear testing on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean."

Over 1,000 soldiers claimed that they and their children were affected by cancer and other ailments, because of exposure to radiation in tests that took place over 50 years ago.

Connery even wrote a letter highlighting his interest in bringing the story, told by McGinley in his book 'No Risk Involved: The Ken McGinley Story: Survivor of a Nuclear Experiment', to the big screen.

He wrote: "It is a shocking history of events. I have already made my opinion regarding the possibility of filming the book written by Mr. McGinley.

"I am more than interested to see the end result and would be prepared to do the narration." [CelebEdge]

Law Abiding Citizen gets an ealier release date

Whoa. This might be kind of a big deal:

Update: So far as non-Universal releases go, Box Office Mojo claims that Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx's Law Abiding Citizen has just been moved up from a release next March to this October 16th. Hmmm, on the tail of Butler's own Gamer the month before and up against the teen-drawing remake of The Stepfather and the theoretically older-crowd-grabbing adaptation of The Road, eh? So many thrillers, so little time. [Cinematical]

I thought at first it had been moved to October of next year, but it really has been moved to October of 2009. If you check out director F. Gary Gray's tweets he hints at why the date has been changed. According to Gray, the movie test scores were "through the roof" and "92 in the top 2 boxes". The executives also love the movie and there was a screening for Gerard Butler and Gerry thinks it's his best film.

Typically this stuff is just hype, but if the date has been moved to a fall release date, then the film might really be good.

Dorian Gray international trailer

Today is a slow news day, but the new international trailer for the film Dorian Gray is now up. Scottish actor Douglas Henshall plays Alan Campbell in the film, but I haven't been able to spot him in the trailer. Maybe he isn't in it at all. The film is set for release on September 9, 2009 and you can watch the trailer below:

First look: John Hannah in Spartacus: Blood and Sand

There was a preview of the brand new Starz Channel original series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand at Comic-Con. The show premieres in January 2010 in the US and stars Scottish actor John Hannah and Lucy Lawless.

John is also in the behind the scenes interviews along with some of the cast and crew of the upcoming show:

Here's a synopsis of the show courtesy of Starz:

Betrayed by his country. Beaten into slavery. Reborn as a warrior. "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" is a graphic and visceral account of Rome’s most famous gladiator. When he’s separated from the love of his life, Spartacus is forced into the gruesome and bloodthirsty arena, where a grisly death is primetime entertainment. Spartacus must fight for survival, befriend his enemies and play politics in this new world of corruption, violence, sex and fame. He’ll be seduced by power and tormented by vengeance. But his passion will give him the strength to prevail over every obstacle, in this modern and uninhibited tale of death, honor and endurance.

Starring Australian actor, Andy Whitfield (McLeod's Daughters) as Spartacus, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as Lucretia, John Hannah (The Mummy, Four Weddings and A Funeral) as Batiatus and Peter Mensah (300, The Incredible Hulk) as Doctore, this unique mix of live action, graphic novel effects and brutal battle sequences is set to make "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" an epic television event.

David Tennant's Comic-Con roundup

David Tennant was at Comic-Con in San Diego to promote Doctor Who. He did tons and tons of interviews, so I will post as many as I possibly can.

First, there's the video of David and John Barrowman introducing Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead and Torchwood: Children of Earth to the panel. I believe this was either on Friday or Saturday. John got a kiss from David. Lucky:

Next is David and Russell T Davies's appearance on San Diego television station CW6 on Sunday morning:

You can also watch video of the Doctor Who panel at Comic-Con. I've uploaded the first part for you and you can watch all 4 parts of the panel here.

Okay, this is the final David Tennant video from Comic-Con (well, at least for this post anyway). He talked to MTV News about those Hobbit rumors:

Campaign to save The Ramshorn Theatre

Mi x, the Webmaster of The Henry Ian Cusick Group sent this tip for us. Many Scottish actors including Henry Ian Cusick and David Tennant got their start at the Ramshorn Theatre, but sadly it might be closed down and displace the Strathclyde Theatre Group:

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to save a Glasgow theatre which gave stars including Dr Who's David Tennant their first break.

Strathclyde Theatre Group believes the Ramshorn Theatre is at risk following a £300million shake-up plan for Strathclyde University's city centre campus.

University chiefs could decide to sell the 1824 landmark in Ingram Street as part of a controversial 10-year plan to create a centre of technical excellence.

The plans for Campus Vision 2020 will now go out to consultation before being submitted to the university's ruling court later this year.

But STG fears its future is at risk and has launched a Save The Ramshorn campaign on Facebook.

The experimental company has helped kick-start the careers of actors including David Tennant, Holby City and EastEnders actor Siobhan Redmond and Lost star Henry Ian Cusick.

It has also been home to directors David Mark Thomson and Leslie Finlay and gave writer Stephen Greenhorn - who created River City - vital early experience.

An STG spokesman said: "The Ramshorn is an integral part of many people's lives, both performing artists and audience members.

"Without it, Glasgow will have lost a great part of its soul."

A university spokeswoman insisted they were looking at every building and analysing their use in the consultation process.

She said: "There is no specific timescale for relinquishing the Ramshorn, and the university appreciates that full consultation would be essential in any such process.

"There has been no discussion surrounding Strathclyde Theatre Group or ending theatre activity." [Evening Times]

You can join the campaign's Facebook page to help save the Ramshorn Theatre from closure. You can also check out the Ramshorn Theatre's webpage and the Strathclyde Theatre Group's webpage to learn more about the theatre's history.

Thanks so much to Mi x for sharing this information with us.

John Barrowman answers some questions

There's a John Barrowman Q&A over at Pop Candy to check out. John answered some reader questions which you can read here.

Torchwood: Children of Earth kicks off its five-night run tonight. And I know people use over-the-top phrases like this all the time, but I swear it's true: This miniseries is the TV event of the summer.

There's an alien invasion, possessed children, a lot of sprinting and shooting and even a little nudity (yay). To further enhance our viewing experience, BBC America launches its brand new HD channel today. Is there anything better than Captain Jack in high definition?

I wrote a preview of Children of Earth for today's paper; check out what creator Russell T. Davies and John Barrowman told me about the show.

You also sent me several questions for Barrowman, and he was kind enough to answer them. Check them out below, and I can't wait to discuss the show tomorrow: [Pop Candy]

Gerard Butler talks Gamer

Gerry will be on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien tonight and will also appear at the world premiere of The Ugly Truth. I'll update you guys on all that as soon as I can. Until then, Gerard did an interview with SciFi Wire to promote Gamer:

"It's what you'd expect if you lived in that world," Butler said in an exclusive telephone interview a few weeks ago while promoting his latest film, The Ugly Truth. "It doesn't stop. It really doesn't let up for a second, even in terms of the drama. I saw it for myself a few weeks ago, and I was blown away. I was so happy with how it turned out."

Butler said the film also delivers on other fronts. "It's a riot," he said. "It's very funny as well. That's what's cool about it. It has the ability to send itself up and not take itself too seriously. But at the same time it gives us a poignant message about the dangers of where entertainment and technology can take us." [SciFi Wire via GB.net]

Craig Ferguson eulogizes Michael Jackson

This was posted over on ONTD! and I really wanted to share it. Craig starts talking about Michael Jackson at 2:15 until the end. It's a very honest, classy, and quite funny monologue. It's from July 7, so check it out if you missed it:

"I am not going to pretend like everyone else in the media that I never made jokes about Michael Jackson on this show. I did. I did make jokes about Michael Jackson on this show that's because he was an icon and I am an iconoclast. It is my job. When I make fun of a celebrity it is nothing personal and I would like to say tonight to the millions of people all over the world...who don't watch this show, to the fans and to the friends and of course to the family of Michael Jackson, our sympathies are with you tonight."

Guess who was invited to join the Academy?

James McAvoy was among the 134 artists invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Those who were invited to join the Academy “have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy’s roster of voting members.”

The Academy usually invites 166 members a year, and last year just 105 artists were invited to join. Those who accept will be added to the 2009 roster at an invitation-only September reception at the Academy’s Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills.
