Well Plaid: Dressed to Kilt brings out the stars in New York

Big names such as Brian Cox, Billy Connolly, Chris Noth and Kiefer Sutherland joined in a charity celebration of Scottish fashion in New York, Dressed to Kilt, as part of Scotland Week.

Dundee actor and Hollywood star Brian Cox led a celebrity line-up from his Broadway show in a uniquely Scottish salute at the Dressed to Kilt fashion event in New York on Tuesday.

Movie legend inspires city filmmaker

A comment from film legend Sir Sean Connery inspired a Glasgow filmmaker.

Last year the former Bond star said at the Edinburgh International that filmmakers don’t make movies about friendship anymore.

And it was that comment made after the 35th anniversary screening of The Man Who Would Be King that inspired Paul Darroch to pursue his most recent project.

Having made 24 films, the new short called Making Contact is about two best friends who after one night out on the town, decide to stop at a park bench and enter a conversation about life and death.

The first official film premiere was held in the 13th Note Cafe last month.

Paul, from Newton Mearns, said: “The film is based on a dream I had around a year ago. Hopefully the story told in the film will speak for itself but since it is about friendship then it means anyone can relate to it.”

Glasgow Media Access Centre, based at Trongate 103, and a supporter of independent films, nominated the 39-year-old for the best film of the year in 2008 along with an award for film of the month in the same year.

The film and television graduate from Glasgow University also won the best film award for the world development movement film competition at the Scottish climate change march three years ago.

Making Contact was mainly filmed in Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock last September and features Simon Weir, a former Monarch of the Glen star, along with newcomer PJ Barnard.

John Barrowman will be on BBC 1 on April 16th for Your Country Needs Blue, a documentary where John joins others to mentor the pop group, Blue, as they prepare for the Eurovision song Competition.

Torchwood star John Barrowman has claimed that the upcoming fourth series will be “bigger and better” than before.

Barrowman was in Cannes, southern France, to present the 10-part series, which was filmed in Wales and Los Angeles.

“The move to America has been amazing,” said Barrowman. “There is so much more we can do with Torchwood now having made the leap to America.”
He added that the action sequences in the series, which is subtitled Miracle Day, are “unbelievable”.
“The audience is going to need a forklift truck to pick their jaws off the ground,” he said. “I used to do quite a lot of stunts but now I’m not allowed to because of the insurance policy. I’m much more valuable in America!”

Barrowman and co-star Eve Myles will be joined by Hollywood actors Bill Pullman, from Independence Day and Mekhi Phifer, who played Tom Hanks’ friend Bubba in Forrest Gump.

Barrowman also insisted that the sexual nature of his character Jack Harkness will not be toned down for US audiences.

“Jack will have his little dabblings and the audience will get exactly what they want,” he claimed.

Torchwood: Miracle Day will premiere in July on BBC One.

Tickets are now on sale for Ian Rickson’s new production of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Douglas Henshall and Ben Miles.

Betrayal, produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, will have its first preview at the Comedy Theatre on 27 May 2011 with press night on 16 June and is booking until 20 August 2011.

"United": interview with David Tennant

The BBC Press Office have released an interview with David Tennant regarding his role in the upcoming movie, "United"

What attracted you to United?
I've worked with James Strong (director) and Chris Chibnall (writer) several times before and James sent me the script. I knew it would be worth reading because it came from him. I'm not a football expert but I was completely bowled over by the incredible story and journey that Manchester United went on. I thought that if it had grabbed and moved me as much as that, then clearly the story must be universal, worth telling and something I wanted to be part of.

What is United about?
The film is about all sorts of things because what happened is so extraordinary. On a very basic level it's a true story but it also looks at the arbitrary nature of fate, the capriciousness of life and the triumph of the human spirit. The film deals with how we pull ourselves together after tragedy, because people cope with grief in so many different ways. We're telling an utterly compelling and dramatic story as it happened. As I started to research this, I realised there's a fair amount of quibbling over detail but the basic facts of the story are indisputable.

The film also follows the relationship between Jimmy and Bobby Charlton. You see him finding Bobby, nurturing and bringing him through. It was a hugely important relationship for both of them. Bobby Charlton said he learnt everything from Jimmy Murphy and credits his career to him.

We try to tell the story and honour it, because it's a story that should be told. It's extraordinary that this hasn't been dramatised before. There's never been a straightforward film or TV drama about this extraordinary dramatic story and it's long overdue.

Billy Connolly to reprise Boondock Saints role in Game

Billy Connolly is going to appear in the game of the cult movie, Boondock Saints.

According to The Daily Record, "The Glaswegian comedian will appear as assassin Il Duce in a game based on the Boondock Saints films.

"The films' director Troy Duffy confirmed he is in talks with game developers for an IOS-based game. He comments that, "The Boondock fan base wants to have a beer with the MacManus brothers and Il Duce and then pick up a weapon and fight. With a video game you can increase that kind of intimacy."

Alan Cumming set for reading of "I Want to Be Evil"

A starry cast has been assembled for a private industry reading of David Brind's new play, I Want To Be Evil, which will be held in Manhattan tomorrow (April 11).

Directed by Will Frears (Still Life, The Water's Edge), the cast will boast Tony Award winner Alan Cumming (Cabaret, CBS' "The Good Wife"), Sandra Bernhard (I'm Still Here... Damn It, Martin Scorsese's "The King of Comedy"), Golden Globe nominee Tom Cavanagh ("Yogi Bear," NBC's “Ed”), Ashlie Atkinson (Fat Pig, The Bridge Project) and Lucas Near-Verbrugghe (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, The Ritz).

David Brind wrote the acclaimed film "Dare," which premiered in Dramatic Competition at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and stars Emmy Rossum ("Shameless"), Zach Gilford (NBC's "Friday Night Lights") and Rooney Mara ("The Social Network"). "Dare" was released theatrically in 2009 and is available both digitally and on DVD/Blu-Ray. Brind's recent projects include the screenplay adaptation of the newly released book "Leverage" for Academy Award-winning producer Stanley Jaffe. He is a graduate of Yale (BA) and Columbia (MFA) Universities.

Shane Marshall Brown and Charly Seamon will produce the reading.
