James McAvoy - the next big thing?

The world economy crashing and burning aside, today is a slower than usual news day. But RopeofSilicon really wants to know who the next big movie star is. They write this about James McAvoy:

James McAvoy doesn't come off as a major movie star. I have always thought of him as that guy in the smaller film I liked. However, he has recently proved to be something of a powerhouse in a pair of smaller flicks as well as a 2008 blockbuster. McAvoy, I felt, was robbed when it came to The Last King of Scotland as all the attention went to Forest Whitaker even though McAvoy carried the entire film. He was also fantastic opposite Keira Knightley in Atonement. The boy can act, no denying. However, you also have to be able to carry the blockbusters as well. With Wanted in 2008 the majority of the attention was obviously on Angelina Jolie, but McAvoy held his own and with the promise of a Wanted 2 those that already saw the film know McAvoy will be at the heart of it. Can he carry it to box-office glory?

Personally I think some of the choices are just either bad or very strange (Gremlins anyone?), some of Bogarts best films are not on, though thankfully the great Paul Newman's films show up quite a lot. Made of Honor still making money

Made of Honor starring Kevin McKidd was at the top of both the sales and rental DVD charts when it was released last week. Add that to the Grey's Anatomy season premier tonight on ABC in the US, and Kevin McKidd will probably have the best week ever.

Ewan McGregor to shoot in New Mexico

If there are any Ewan fans who live in Albuquerque, New Mexico this news might interest you:

Film stars George Clooney and Ewan McGregor are heading to New Mexico to shoot their new movie Men Who Stare at Goats, the movie's publicist says.

The film, which reportedly will co-star Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges, is based on British journalist Jon Ronson's non-fiction book by the same name.

Rob Harris, the movie's publicist, told the Albuquerque Journal the film is expected to start shooting in northern New Mexico this November.

Ronson's book is about the U.S. Army's alleged experimentation with psychological warfare techniques, including its attempts to use brain waves to kill goats and rock music to torture suspects, the newspaper noted.

Lovely Last Station stills

The awesome folks at Awards Daily point us to tons of photos from ONTD! of James McAvoy and the rest of the cast (including James' lovely wife Anne-Marie Duff) of The Last Station. They also dug up a Last Station press conference from earlier this year. The film is set to be released for early 2009 which considering the awards worthiness of the cast seems like a bad idea. Hopefully the distributers have enough sense to release this later, during awards season of 2009. Anyway, enjoy people!
