Kevin McKidd: 'Justice League' casting

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox cast, photos revealed
Flashpoint Batman from the DVD movie
Justin Chambers and Kevin McKidd, both veterans of the hit ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy, will head up the cast in the upcoming DC Universe animated feature Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, based on Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s Flashpoint.
Chambers will play Barry Allen (the Flash), the superhero around whom the film centers and who is, to a certain extent, responsible for shaping the world of Flashpoint. McKidd stars as the Batman of the Flashpoint Universe, while Kevin Conroy will return as Bruce Wayne in the sections set in the main DC Universe that reportedly bookend the film.

Brave sequel on the cards

Sequel to Disney-Pixar’s Brave on the cards
A sequel to Brave is on the cards. Picture: AP
A sequel to the blockbuster Disney-Pixar movie Brave is on the cards - once the film-makers find a good enough storyline.
The Oscar-winning director of the film set in the Scottish Highlands signalled a follow-up was likely thanks to the success and marketing campaign which came out of last year’s fantasy adventure.
And Mark Andrews said he would be keen to add a host of new characters and other Scottish actors to the line-up to join the likes of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson and Kevin McKidd.
However he admitted that much of the humour in the film had been lost on American audiences, who only understand around half of the jokes.
Andrews was speaking during a visit to Glasgow to kick off a two-week mentoring project for students from across Scotland.

A remote corner of the Highlands is hoping for an economic and tourism boost after being chosen as the atmospheric location for a new feature film.
Scots-born Hollywood stars Ashley Jensen and Kevin McKidd will be shooting love triangle drama Indian Summer on the Eriboll estate in Sutherland over the next few months.
The estate looks on to the vast ten-mile long sea loch, near Cape Wrath, where 33 German submarines surrendered in 1945.
The film, set during the “summer of love” in 1967, revolves around a new arrival in the close-knit community who is both a US Marine and a Native American and is described as being a “bittersweet romance”.
Grey’s Anatomy star McKidd and Jensen, who shot to fame in Extras and Ugly Betty, play the God-fearing husband and lonely wife whose lives are transformed by the “exotic stranger”.
The two Scots actors will be joined by Chaske Spencer, who is best known for his role as a werewolf in the Twilight vampire movies.

Kevin McKidd: ebay auction in support of Save The Children

From WetPaint:

One of Kevin's most beloved charities is Save the Children, an organization devoted to — you guessed it! — helping children in need. He's supported the charity for years, and even donated the proceeds from his folk album to it.

Now, he's hosting a charity auction that his fans can take part in!

Now through Monday, February 25, you can bid on items ranging from message cards to keychains to photo frames on eBay. They're all hand crafted items from The Scrappy Tree, and each one is signed by Kevin himself. As of now, it looks like most items are in the $10-20 range.

The proceeds will go to Save the Children's international emergency response campaigns. According to Kevin's website, the funds will help "recovery and life saving support efforts involving USA Hurricane Sandy, Philippine flooding, South Sudan shelter aid, African food and hunger crises, and Haiti earthquake relief, to name a few."

Anna Karenina - earlier adaptations

A feast of Annas

I know I am coming late to this, but tonight I am off to the Clapham Picturehouse to see Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina with Keira Knightley. Despite the so-so reviews, I am intrigued to see how the film-set-in-a-theatre idea comes off. Tolstoy’s great novel is also probably the novel that would run Middlemarch the closest if I was allowed only a single book on a desert island (assuming I had a complete Shakespeare, of course). Which led me to muse on earlier screen manifestations of this tale of love, loss and redemption – and across the jump I have assembled seven YouTube clips of trailers and extracts, as well as the links that will take you to the two parts of a complete (legal) adaptation from Mosfilm with spectacular visuals made in the Soviet Union in 1967. For more about these and other adaptations, see this Wikipedia list. Enjoy.

1. Love, 1927, MGM, directed by Edmund Goulding and (uncredited) John Gilbert
A scene from the comparatively little-known silent adaptation starring Greta Gardo and John Gilbert – Vronsky speaks with Anna on Easter Night in St Petersburg’s cathedral. The astonishing art direction is by Cedric Gibbons and Alexander Toubuloff; the luminous cinematography is courtesy of William Daniels.

2. Anna Karenina, 1935, MGM, directed by Clarence Brown
Eight years later, Greta Gabo reprised the role, this time with Fredric March as Vronsky and Clarence Brown as director. Daniels and Gibbons both contributed to this production as well, although the gowns this time were by Adrian. This is the trailer from the time.

3. Anna Karenina, 1961, BBC, directed by Rudolph Cartier
This is the trailer for a remarkable small-screen version with Claire Bloom and Sean Connery, about which I blogged here (there are some nice screen-grabs too).

4. Anna Karenina, 1967, directed by Aleksandr Zarkhi, part one

5. Anna Karenina, 1967, directed by Aleksandr Zarkhi, part two
A truly spectacular – and very watchable – adaptation which was supposed to compete in the 1968 Cannes Film Festival – before, that is, the event was cancelled because of les evenements of May that year. Both parts are officially posted on YouTube in full by Mosfilm (there are over two hundred other Russian movies to choose from as well) and you can use the “captions” control to access English subtitles.

6. Anna Karenina, 1977, BBC, directed by Basil Coleman
This is the episode one (of ten) opening of a classic serial from the BBC, with Nicola Pagett and Eric Porter. It’s certainly studio bound, but it is far from negligible,

7. Anna Karenina, 1997,  Icon Entertainment, directed by Bernard Rose
Sean Bean was not everyone’s idea of Vronsky in a comparatively low-budget Hollywood version, but this extract from the ball scene is fun – Sophie Marceau plays Anna.

8. Anna Karenina, 2000, Company Pictures for Channel 4, directed by David Blair
I recall rather liking this comparatively conservative small screen version, which stars Helen McCrory and Kevin McKidd. Here is the opening – but all of it is currently available (presumably illegally) on YouTube. so you have the chance to make up your own mind.

9. … plus the official trailer for Boris Eifman’s full-length ballet to music by (who else?) Tchaikovsky, which was premiered in St Petersburg in 2005.

Interview: Robbie Coltrane and Kevin McKidd discuss Brave

Disney-Pixar’s Brave finally opens on “home” turf this week, as the year’s most Scottish film lands in cinemas from Orkney to Galashiels.

For Scottish audiences, used to hearing the accent getting mangled on screen (Brigadoon anyone?), Disney-Pixars’ decision to use Scottish actors, including Robbie Coltrane and Kevin McKidd as Lords Dingwall and MacGuffin respectively, is a welcome one.

The Lords and their sons are seen to arrive at DunBroch Castle, home of Merida (Kelly Macdonald) and her parents, King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), just before things start to go very wrong in the Kingdom.

One thing immediately noticeable in Brave is that the actors haven’t been forced to tone down their accents, at least not too much.

“They were very tolerant of us putting in Scots words people won’t have heard before, but in the context of the settings you’d understand them,” says Coltrane. “Everybody instinctively knows what ‘jings, crivvens, help ma boab’ means, even if they’ve never heard it before.”

Unlike live action roles, the actors don’t resemble their characters in Brave. Was it odd for Coltrane to voice such a small character?

“The size of the body, throat and chest size have to be right or the public won’t accept it. The guys at Pixar know exactly how to do that. It was great fun to do, we’d try different things. All the production costs go into the animation so when you’re in the studio you have all the time in the world.”

“They make you do things in many permutations,” adds McKidd. “That gives them the option to use what they want.”

Kevin McKidd: 'Comes A Bright Day' DVD release

Craig Roberts (Submarine) and Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) star in the electric new British romantic thriller Comes A Bright Day, debuting on DVD on August 6 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

In writer director Simon Aboud’s coming of age love story a chance encounter becomes a chance for love when Sam (Craig Roberts) meets Mary (Imogen Poots) and the two find themselves the hostage of a high stakes armed robbery at one of London’s most exclusive jewellers.

Comes A Bright Day also stars Timothy Spall (The King’s Speech), Kevin McKidd (Trainspotting) and Josef Atlin (Eastern Promises).

The DVD is packed with bonus materials, including a photo gallery and featurettes providing insights from cast and crew on the making of the film.

Love blossoms in the most unusual circumstances when young bellboy Sam (Craig Roberts, Submarine) and beautiful shop assistant Mary (Imogen Poots, 28 Weeks Later) are kidnapped by brutal armed robbers (Kevin McKidd, Trainspotting; Josef Altin, Eastern Promises) intent on stealing a £1 million brooch.

Taken hostage along with belligerent shop owner Charlie (Timothy Spall, The King’s Speech), the young couple find themselves falling for each other on this terrifying ‘first date’.

This tense and stylish British thriller proves that sometimes extreme pressure can reveal a hidden gem.
