Kevin McKidd: 'Justice League' casting

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox cast, photos revealed
Flashpoint Batman from the DVD movie
Justin Chambers and Kevin McKidd, both veterans of the hit ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy, will head up the cast in the upcoming DC Universe animated feature Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, based on Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s Flashpoint.
Chambers will play Barry Allen (the Flash), the superhero around whom the film centers and who is, to a certain extent, responsible for shaping the world of Flashpoint. McKidd stars as the Batman of the Flashpoint Universe, while Kevin Conroy will return as Bruce Wayne in the sections set in the main DC Universe that reportedly bookend the film.

Iain De Caestecker: 'Shell' blu-ray release

'Shell': Blu-ray release
Independent British distributors Verve Pictures will release on Blu-ray Scottish writer-director Scott Graham's first feature film Shell (2012), starring Chloe Pirrie, Tam Dean Burn, Morven Christie, and Iain De Caestecker. The release will be available for purchase online and in shops across the United Kingdom on July 8th.

Shell is a 17-year-old woman who lives and works at a petrol station in the desolate Scottish Highlands. Apart from the occasional customers who call by for fuel, and a few regulars who acknowledge and catch up with her, Shell's only company is her reserved and softly spoken father Pete (Joseph Mawle), to whom she is devoted. A young girl trying to find her place in the world, she is on the cusp of womanhood, struggling to re-imagine her role within her own family and life in general. Pete, meanwhile, is damaged goods. He still keenly feels the absence of his wife, who ran away when Shell was four, while his connection with his daughter is both difficult and disturbing.

An assured debut feature starring Joseph Mawle and newcomer Chloe Pirrie, Shell marks the arrival of Scottish writer-director Scott Graham as a distinctive new voice in British cinema.

Shell was nominated for three awards at the BFI London Film Festival, including the Best Newcomer award for lead Chloe Pirrie, who provides the film with its beating heart.

Entertainment Film Distributors has backed and will distribute Proclaimers musical, with Dexter Fletcher directing Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks.
Anticipated DNA-Black Camel feature Sunshine on Leith, adapted by Stephen Greenhorn from his hit stage musical, is now underway in Scotland.
Dexter Fletcher (Wild Bill) will direct Peter Mullan, Jane Horrocks, George McKay, Kevin Guthrie, Antonia Thomas and Freya Mavor in the “feel-good contemporary musical”, which will feature music from the iconic band The Proclaimers.
Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich produce from DNA with Arabella Page Croft and Kieran Parker from Black Camel Pictures (Outpost). The film marks Macdonald’s first feature produced in Scotland since Trainspotting.
Sunshine on Leith is financed by Entertainment Film Distributors, the BFI Film Fund and Creative Scotland, with Entertainment distributing in the UK.
Croft and Parker said: “Sunshine is a foot tapping feel good project that is blessed with terrific partners on its journey from script to screen. Stephen’s heartwarming script and The Proclaimer’s uplifting soundtrack allowed Black Camel to attract strong producing partners in DNA with the support of Entertainment, Creative Scotland and BFI. It’s a fantastic filmmaking opportunity for Black Camel and for Scotland.”
The film will shoot for six weeks in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Identical twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid of The Proclaimers have released nine albums since 1987 and are probably best known for hits I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), I’m On My Way and Letter from America.

Empire exclusive: 'The Joy Of Six' trailer
It's not often we get the chance to dwell on short films in these parts, what with so many long ones to fixate on, so it's a rare joy to be able to debut this new trailer showing newbie filmmakers at work in the shorter form. As you know, we're also partial to the odd pun around here so The Joy Of Six ticks multiple boxes. Well, two boxes.
Click below to catch a glimpse of Romola Garai and Matthew Holness' directorial debuts, and Peter Mullan, Dame Judi Dench and Luke Treadaway on the other side of the camera.

Garai's 21-minute directorial debut Scrubber gives her the chance to step away from the trials and tribulations of Atonement, Glorious 39, King Lear and the like and let someone else (her Crimson Petal And The White co-star Amanda Hale) take the strain as a young mum with a strange obsession.
Holness's A Gun For George, meanwhile, should delight fans of his Marenghian alter egos. It sees Terry Finch, the creatively stymied author of The Reprisalizer and all-round loner, "looking for brutal revenge on the mean streets of East Kent".
There are also contributions from Douglas Hart (Long Distance Information), Will Jewell (Man In Fear), Dan Sully (The Ellington Kid) and Chris Foggin (Friend Request Pending) in this year's New British Cinema Quarterly short film initiative.
Aimed at "showcasing the best of British screen and directing talent", The Joy Of Six is distributed by Soda Pictures from Friday.

Trainspotting 15th Year Anniversary Blu-Ray Release

Greys Gabble gives a McKidd-centric commentary on the Blu-ray release of Trainspotting, due out on 29 November

Trainspotting takes place in Scotland and follows Marc Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his gaggle of misfit friends; Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle), Tommy (Kevin McKidd) and Spud (Ewen Bremner). Each one of them is a far cry from what one would consider a respectable human being and nearly all of them, save for Begbie, is addicted to heroin.

WIN: Billy Connolly’s "Route 66" on Blu-ray

Billy Connolly’s Route 66 drives onto Blu-ray and DVD on the 10th October 2011 from Universal Pictures (UK) Ltd. Also available to buy and download from iTunes.

From the all-new ITV1 series, produced by Maverick Television, Billy Connolly’s Route 66 sees Billy turn Easy Rider as he follows a lifelong dream and makes the iconic 2488 mile journey from Chicago to Santa Monica.

Route 66
is the embodiment of the American Dream. Millions have travelled its epic trail from the skyscrapers of Chicago and St Louis, through the Wild West badlands of Oklahoma and Texas, the Grand Canyon and deserts of New Mexico and Arizona, to the beaches of the Pacific and the excesses of LA.

Set to a soundtrack of some of the best American music of the 20th century, Billy also brings his banjo along for the ride. With his unrivalled ability to tell a great story, he brings to life both the big and small moments of American history: the world changing events and the comic asides.

Billy says:

“Travelling Route 66 has always been a lifelong ambition – It brings together some of my favourite things -my trike, my banjo and America. The ultimate road trip”

On his way, Billy meets disciples of Route 66, from seasoned “roadies” to first-timers living the dream. And he isn’t just passing through: anything could happen on the way… from swapping his Boom trike for a horse saddle in Texas, to soaring above LA in a helicopter with the city’s traffic patrol.

Includes over 40mins of exclusive, never been seen before, DVD extras – featuring Billy’s hilarious video diary from his road trip.

Billy Connolly’s Route 66 is the definitive DVD and Blu-ray, also available to buy and download from iTunes this Autumn.

All you need to do for your chance of winning a copy of the Blu-ray is email contest@obsessedwithfilm.com with the e-mail header Billy Connolly’s Route 66. Make sure you leave your full name and address and please only enter if you are 12 or over. Winners will be notified in November.

'Pimp' trailer with Billy Boyd

The official Pimp trailer has been out for a couple of weeks, so I've been a little slow in posting it. There have been reports that Gerard Butler helped to fund the film, which reminded me about it. My apologies for being slow. Anyway, the film stars Robert Cavanah, Billy Boyd, and Martin Compston and opens in the UK on May 21. It debuts on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 24.

Synopsis: Working for Stanley (Danny Dyer), Woody (Robert Cavanah) is a pimp, hustler and fixer in Soho's sex industry who agrees to be followed and filmed by a documentary camera crew for one week. However, it soon turns out to be no ordinary week; one of his porn directors is behind schedule, he’s kicked out of his apartment for not paying his rent and he’s beaten up by his landlord and by Chinese thugs who are encroaching onto Stanley’s territory.

These are the least of his problems, though, as he finds out when one of his girls, Petra, goes missing. During his frantic search for her throughout the seductive Soho underworld, Woody soon finds himself starting to question his whole life – a life he now finds is spiralling brutally out of control…

Featuring an explosive cast (including Billy Boyd, Scarlett Alice Johnson, Martin Compston and Barbara Nedeljakova), Pimp is a sexy, exciting and action-packed look at the darker side of London’s glamorous and dangerous nightlife.

Renewed hope for 'Rex Is Not Your Lawyer' + new 'Hamlet' clip

NBC delayed David Tennant's Rex is Not Your Lawyer back in January, but it looks like the show might still have a chance at being in the fall lineup. NBC needs between 5 to 7 new dramas for the upcoming season:
REX IS NOT YOUR LAWYER: This off-cycle pilot staged a comeback after being pronounced dead when the network didn’t pick it up for midseason. The legal drama’s producers did more work on the pilot they had originally rushed, including adding voiceover. The reworked pilot tested well, and the project has received an order for two back-up scripts. [Deadline via ONTD!]

MovieWeb unveiled a brand new exclusive clip from Hamlet featuring David Tennant. After it airs on PBS on April 28, the DVD and Blu-ray will debut on May 4 in the US.

New Ewan McGregor interview; project with Peter Capaldi still in the works?

Ewan has been busy promoting The Ghost in the UK and did an interview with the Birmingham Mail (via Sweet on Sigma Films). He also talked about working with his uncle Denis Lawson on The Last Word and maybe working on The Great Pretender with fellow Scottish actor Peter Capaldi.

On working with his uncle:

Since completing The Ghost, Ewan has been able to fulfil an ambition to work with his uncle Denis Lawson, whose exploits in the original Star Wars movies inspired his young nephew back in Crieff, Scotland.

“I love him to death and he is the only person I ever turn to if I need to speak about work.

“I went to start work on The Last Word with David Mackenzie, who I made Young Adam with. I play a chef and there was a nice relationship with the owner of the restaurant. I could just see me and my uncle in those parts together. I suggested it as many times as I felt was polite because it had to be David’s decision.

“It was just lovely to be on set with him and playing two Scottish characters in Scotland.” [Alison Jones]

There hasn't been much news on The Great Pretender in nearly two years, but evidently Peter Capaldi is still trying to get the project off the ground. The film is set in 1938 and back in 2008 IMDb listed the plot as being about two producers who "hire Hollywood star Leslie Grangely (McGregor) to play Bonnie Prince Charlie (also McGregor) in a movie about the 18th century Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland. Soon afterward, a drunk Grangely disappears and the producers are forced to find a replacement. They trick a lookalike extra into playing the role of Bonnie Prince Charlie, "The Great Pretender." It looks like the film is still in development:

He is also hoping to work for another fellow countryman, Peter Capaldi, on The Great Pretender, which would present him with a formidable challenge as he would be called on to play four roles.

However, the pet project written by the In The Loop star has unfortunately been caught up in a legal tangle over rights.

“It is a funny situation to be in when it is your creation, to be stuck,” says Ewan. “I told Peter ‘I may be too old for this in a minute. Hurry up’. But he has reassured me we should be all right.” [Alison Jones ]

Also as a reminder: The Men Who Stare at Goats, which also stars Ewan debuts on Blu-ray and DVD today in the UK.

Gerard Butler talks new Evil Twins project

Gerard did an interview over at Film School Rejects as part of the Law Abiding Citizen press tour. The highlight of the interview was Gerry's revelation that his production company, Evil Twins is working an a new project:

And what is Evil Twins working on now?

There’s a few different projects that we’ve been working on, but there’s one in particular – it’s a movie called Slide about a former baseball player who goes back to try and patch things up with his child and estranged wife and ends up coaching the kid’s baseball team. He becomes the subject of fascination and longer by every bored house wife in the town. And it’s him trying to survive that while trying to patch things up with his kid. I think we’re going to have GM direct the movie. Hopefully. We’re in talks with him, and he’s very much up for directing it so we’ll what happens there.

In other movie news, Gamer will debut on DVD and Blu-ray in the US on January 19, 2010.

Gerard is one of the winners in the Hollywood Film Festival. He had the highest percentage of votes at 25%.
