Ewen Bremner: Blackout, EIFF

BBC’s Blackout – quality drama to keep an eye on
What’s this? Quality drama coming out of the UK that doesn’t begin with the words Downton, Doctor or Sherlock? If the cast is any indication, absolutely. Starring Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, Lennon Naked, The Shadow Line), Dervla Kirwan (Injustice, The Silence), Ewen Bremner (Page Eight, Perfect Sense) and Andrew Scott (Sherlock, The Hour, Lennon Naked), the 3-part drama Blackout will première on BBC One beginning on 4 July 2012.

The series follows Daniel Demoys, played by Eccleston, a stranger in his own life. Over the years he has gone from being an idealistic young man with a burning desire to make the world a better place, to a disillusioned and corrupt council official. His alcoholism has driven a wedge between him and wife, Alex, played by Dervla Kirwan, and their three children. The fallout from his alcohol fuelled actions prove agonising for all around him.

When Daniel wakes up after another drunken night, he realises that he might be responsible for a murder. A dramatic act of redemption buys him public adoration, so much so that he has become a candidate in the race for Mayor, persuaded by council official Jerry Durrans, and lawyer sister Lucy. He is painfully aware that it could all come crashing down at any moment, especially with Detective Dalien Bevan, played by Andrew Scott, hot on his trail and determined to gain respect in the force.

  • Edinburgh International Film Festival looks to offer inspiring opportunities for young people
The Edinburgh International Film Festival, which takes place next month, has announced a series of opportunities for young people to explore film.

Building on last year’s inaugural initiative, the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) will offer 25 young people a unique opportunity to participate in the 2012 festival.

The Young Talents programme is aimed at film fans aged between 16 and 18, with selected participants given a free EIFF Student Pass allowing them access to Industry events, press and industry screenings and an exclusive Young Talents events programme, as well as selected parts of the public programme. Young Talents is supported by Creative Scotland and through the Scottish Government Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund.

EIFF is now accepting applications for Young Talents 2012 and is welcoming all applicants aged 16 to 18 years old with an interest in film and who are able to be in Edinburgh during the festival dates from 20 June to 1 July. The deadline for applications is 23 May and can be accessed at edfilmfest.org.uk/learning.

Young Talents was launched at the 2011 Festival and involved 21 young people who participated in over 30 events and screenings including private Q&A sessions with actor Ewen Bremner (Perfect Sense; Trainspotting), Martin Compston (Sweet Sixteen, The Damned United) and director Dominic Allan (Calvet).

Designed to inspire young people with an interest in film to pursue a career in the industry, Young Talents explores film analysis, performance and craft, and aims to reveal the routes young people can take into the UK film industry.

Laurence Williams, 18, who participated last year, said: “There were so many events to take advantage of and I hope that I will make use of all the information and advice given.

“It was amazing meeting, talking to, and hearing from people with experience and knowledge in the film industry.”

For those in further and higher education, EIFF has announced the Student Critics Award Jury that will offer three places for aspiring film critics to attend EIFF and view a shortlisted programme of films.

Working with two established critics as mentors, the Jury will develop their writing and critical skills during their time at EIFF. The Jury will select the winner of the inaugural Student Critics Award at EIFF’s Awards Ceremony on 30 June. Applicants for the Student Critics Award Jury will be asked to submit 400 words on a particular film or an aspect of cinema. Further details are available from education@cmi-scotland.co.uk.

EIFF 2012 also sees the return of Edinburgh Schools Film Competition in partnership with Screen Education Edinburgh and Arts & Learning, City of Edinburgh Council.

Open to all pupils in City of Edinburgh Council run nurseries, primaries, secondary and special education schools, the competition will see selected films share the festival limelight with leading filmmakers from around the world. Work is viewed and selected by a young people’s jury who also coordinate and present the Schools Film Competition Award Ceremonies during the festival.

David Barras, filmmaker and jury coordinator, said: "Having worked with groups who have submitted films and now being behind the scenes on the jury, I can honestly say that the ideas, creativity and imagination of young people in Edinburgh is always startling and the films represent an amazing breadth of inventiveness and originality.

“It's great that the competition and its eventual winners are all decided by other young people."

The chosen films will screen to the public on Saturday 23 June for primary, and Sunday 24 June for secondary schools.

For school audiences, there will be a range of screenings, including two Media Days for High Schools, containing short and feature film screenings, master-classes and the chance to meet filmmakers and industry professionals on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 June. There will also be opportunities for primary schools and students of Modern Studies to attend film screenings.

Film screenings support teachers and students in their learning and each film is carefully chosen from the main programme to support the Curriculum for Excellence. Full details of the schools programme are available at www.edfilmfest.org.uk/learning or by contacting education@cmi-scotland.co.uk.

New interview with Martin Compston

Martin Compston did an interview with the Daily Record right before the Edinburgh International Film Festival opens this Wednesday. Two of Martin's films will be screened at the festival - SoulBoy and Donkeys. SoulBoy premieres on Saturday at Cineworld and Donkeys premieres next Sunday at The Filmhouse. The full interview was published yesterday:

Edinburgh comes at a good time for Martin. He is taking a six-week break, having had minor surgery on an ear complaint and cracking a rib filming upcoming prison drama Ghost.

But he'll soon be setting his sights on cracking America.

Having enjoyed mainstream success in the UK with The Disappearance of Alice Creed, the film is about to open across the pond and he's been signed up by the same US agent who represents Avatar's Sam Worthington.

He said: "I've been lucky enough to work with some great directors and I don't want to throw that away by doing one big horrible big budget film.

"I'm just taking my time and trying to pick good projects."

He has no shortage of offers. He's already got the slasher horror Comedown in the bag. When his ear and rib mend, he is off to learn how to surf for buddy movie In Between The Waves. [Steve Hendry]

Scottish actor Robert Carlyle won the PPG Award for Best Performance in a British Film for his role in Summer, with the jury calling it "a flawless performance in a great, uncompromising film, a film that touches the heart." Here's a synopsis of the plot from the production company's website:

Scottish films at the Festival de Cannes

May is pretty much Cannes Film Festival month (this year it runs from May 14 to May 25), which is huge for the film industry. Indie films New Town Killers starring Dougray Scott and Stone of Destiny starring Billy Boyd will be represented at the festival. The production team of New Town Killers will try to sell the film and attendees can view a promotional screening at their office at the festival, while a filmmaker from Stone of Destiny will be on a panel about producing and making films in Scotland.

I'm not sure if Stone of Destiny will actually be screened at Cannes because there are reports that its world premier will be at the 62nd Edinburgh International Film Festival (June 18 to June 29) where it will be competing for the UK Film Council-sponsored Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature. Here's a synopsis of Stone of Destiny from Newsahead:

The Anglo-Canadian film is the story of Ian Hamilton, a dedicated nationalist who reignited Scottish national pride in the 1950s with his daring raid on the heart of England to bring the Stone of Scone back to Scotland. Often referred to as the Stone of Scone, it was the stone upon which all monarchs of Scotland were crowned from the very first King back in 847. After a long and colorful history, it ended up back in Edinburgh Castle 11 years ago and still resides there.

You can read a synopsis of New Town Killers in a previous post.
