New Ewan McGregor interview; project with Peter Capaldi still in the works?

Ewan has been busy promoting The Ghost in the UK and did an interview with the Birmingham Mail (via Sweet on Sigma Films). He also talked about working with his uncle Denis Lawson on The Last Word and maybe working on The Great Pretender with fellow Scottish actor Peter Capaldi.

On working with his uncle:

Since completing The Ghost, Ewan has been able to fulfil an ambition to work with his uncle Denis Lawson, whose exploits in the original Star Wars movies inspired his young nephew back in Crieff, Scotland.

“I love him to death and he is the only person I ever turn to if I need to speak about work.

“I went to start work on The Last Word with David Mackenzie, who I made Young Adam with. I play a chef and there was a nice relationship with the owner of the restaurant. I could just see me and my uncle in those parts together. I suggested it as many times as I felt was polite because it had to be David’s decision.

“It was just lovely to be on set with him and playing two Scottish characters in Scotland.” [Alison Jones]

There hasn't been much news on The Great Pretender in nearly two years, but evidently Peter Capaldi is still trying to get the project off the ground. The film is set in 1938 and back in 2008 IMDb listed the plot as being about two producers who "hire Hollywood star Leslie Grangely (McGregor) to play Bonnie Prince Charlie (also McGregor) in a movie about the 18th century Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland. Soon afterward, a drunk Grangely disappears and the producers are forced to find a replacement. They trick a lookalike extra into playing the role of Bonnie Prince Charlie, "The Great Pretender." It looks like the film is still in development:

He is also hoping to work for another fellow countryman, Peter Capaldi, on The Great Pretender, which would present him with a formidable challenge as he would be called on to play four roles.

However, the pet project written by the In The Loop star has unfortunately been caught up in a legal tangle over rights.

“It is a funny situation to be in when it is your creation, to be stuck,” says Ewan. “I told Peter ‘I may be too old for this in a minute. Hurry up’. But he has reassured me we should be all right.” [Alison Jones ]

Also as a reminder: The Men Who Stare at Goats, which also stars Ewan debuts on Blu-ray and DVD today in the UK.

Ewan McGregor with Conan O'Brien + new character poster from 'The Men Who Stare at Goats'

The two parts of Ewan's appearance are online here and here. I've tried embedding it, but that seems to make it not play at all, but it plays at The Tonight Show's website. I'm not sure if it will work everywhere outside of the US, but it's working here in Jamaica. There isn't a clip on youtube yet, but I'll keep checking. Fingers crossed someone posts it.

In the mean time check out Ewan's new character poster from The Men Who Stare at Goats. You can go here for the full set with the other characters.

New trailers for 'Amelia' and 'The Men Who Stare at Goats'

The new TV spot for Amelia features Ewan McGregor. I've seen it on TV a few times, so I thought I'd share:

Some reviews (via Awards Daily) for Amelia have started trickling in, so I've posted excerpts.

From Ray Bennett of The Hollywood Reporter:
The script has input from Gore Vidal, who is portrayed as a child in the film by William Cuddy. He became close to Earhart when she had an affair with his father, noted aviation pioneer Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor), and there is a charming scene in which she explains to the frightened boy why her bedroom has walls covered in images from the jungle.

The film is framed by Earhart's ill-fated attempt to fly around the world in 1937 with flashbacks to her introduction to flying and her burst into worldwide fame. Richard Gere plays publisher George Putnam -- who promoted her flights and became her very understanding husband -- with much charm and is matched by McGregor as Vidal.

From Pete Hammond at The Envelope:
A studio source who finally saw the finished film for the first time told me his worst fears were not realized, saying, "I didn't like it, I LOVED it." That newfound enthusiasm was shared by other staffers I ran into on the lot who had also just seen it.

The fact is "Amelia" is a beautifully crafted and very traditional epic drama that's aimed at an older, more discerning audience. That's the kind of crowd that's slow to show up at the multiplex, but if they do, they will be treated to the kind of fine adult biographical story movie studios generally just don't seem to be making anymore.

There will also be a commemorative exhibit of the movie at the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Kansas from October 23 - 24, 2009. Tickets are $10.00 and they include a special showing at the the museum of clothing worn by Hilary Swank in the film and a screening of Amelia. You can call the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum to reserve tickets: 1-913-367-4217 and check out the museum's website for details. Amelia opens this Friday, October 23.

And now for the new hilarious featurette from The Men Who Stare at Goats. You can watch the hi-res version at Apple.

Update: The Last Word, also starring Ewan McGregor has officially wrapped (via Sweet on Sigma).
