James McAvoy: 'Wanted 2' update, 'Transcendence' casting

ALT
Wanted 2' Update: No Jolie, But New Female Character — EXCLUSIVE

From Hollywood:
Fans of the 2008 action movie Wanted have been waiting patiently for word on a sequel since the film hit big at the domestic box office (grossing nearly $134.5 million), but now it sounds like Wanted 2 may finally on the horizon.
Talking to Hollywood.com about his new novel spy novel, The Right Hand (set for release in November), Wanted screenwriter Derek Haas revealed that he and his writing partner Michael Brandt are readying to deliver their second draft of the script. Arriving at this point nearly half a decade later was a bumpy ride Haas was happy to take.
"After the first movie came out, we were supposed to write the sequel," says Haas. "For various reasons, we didn't connect with what Universal wanted to do creatively. A little bit of what Timur [Bekmambetov, director] wanted to do. So we just sort of bowed out gracefully."
Universal hired multiple writers to tackle the Wanted 2 script after Haas and Brandt departed the sequel. But in 2011, the studio reapproach them for the job. "We got that call that you always love as a screenwriter. 'Can you guys please come back?' We loved the world. That experience was great. We said, 'Well here's what we want to do with the sequel.' And they said, 'Okay.'"
Haas says his time away from Wanted 2 has strengthened his interest in the project, and will actually serve the story. "After four years, from a creative standpoint, it's almost better, because we can pick up the story four years later," says Haas. "It's 'Where is Wesley four years after the events of the first movie?'" Rumors surrounding the plot of Wanted 2 have come and gone with the various attached screenwriters (including possible prequel ideas that could open the door for the return of Angelina Jolie), but Haas insists the goal is not to undo anything presented in the original film. "Angelina Jolie gets shot in the head and everyone's like, 'Oh, are you going to bring back Fox?' I said, 'Did you see the bullet go into her head?' And they say, 'Oh, she can take one of those milk baths!' We never wanted to do that movie."
What Haas and Brandt are working on sounds much more interesting: "The only thing I can tell you is that Wesley [James McAvoy] is now, four years later, recruiting a young woman who is in his situation in the first movie. She's got a sh**ty life. He's sort of in the Fox role. This new girl is brought into the world."
After penning a novel and cooking up a TV show that debuted this season (Chicago Fire), Haas says he's thrilled to be back in the comic book universe of Wanted 2, where his imagination can really run wild. "The world is a blast. Timur is awesome. You get to go nuts. As writers it's really freeing to bend physics and natural laws."

James McAvoy drops out of untitled cancer comedy

James has dropped out of the formerly titled I'm With Cancer after shooting started last month in Vancouver. Summit Entertainment has confirmed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will step into the role. Shooting has been halted temporarily and will start up again in the week of March 8. Co-star Seth Rogen gave a statement to MTV:
Rogen said, "It’s incredibly unfortunate that circumstances outside of everyone’s control have taken James away from the project, but, with James’s blessing, we were able to have Joseph step in to take on the [lead] role of Adam. We all look forward to working with James in the future."

...For what it's worth, we've been hearing rumors from readers about a death in McAvoy's family, which would be a more than reasonable explanation for his departure. Since we're not in the business of gossip I'm not planning to investigate further, but I wish McAvoy all the best in whatever took him away from I'm With Cancer, and anxiously await what Gordon-Levitt will have to offer in the role. There is also a little Wanted 2 news today. Last week Angelina Jolie reportedly dropped out of Wanted 2 and Universal quickly scrapped the project. Apparently those reports hadn't been confirmed by anyone at Universal. Now comes word that Wanted co-creator Mark Millar says the film could still get made because Universal may not have come to a final decision.

You can also watch an exclusive interview (via JMMB) with James and Best Actress nominee Helen Mirren discussing The Last Station over at Making Of. I would embed it, but the video comes with autoplay.

Universal scraps 'Wanted 2'

Earlier this month Mark Millar stated that the Wanted 2 script was almost complete and shooting would soon begin. But Universal has now decided to scrap the sequel because Angelina Jolie has signed on to Gravity:
Apparently the studio was expecting for Angelina Jolie to return for "Wanted 2," but the actress has instead joined the cast of "Gravity," a space thriller to be directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men). Instead of recasting Jolie's character, Universal decided to just abandon the sequel. [WorstPreviews.com]

'Wanted 2' script almost ready. Again.

According to Mark Millar the Wanted 2 script is almost ready and shooting will soon begin. We've heard this before, but I figured I'd share in case this turned out to be the real deal:

"I can't remember exactly when it's going to start shooting — I don't even know if I can officially say — but it will be soon and the script is almost ready," said Millar during an interview with IGN. Millar also disclosed where the sequel would pick up and reiterated that it would have a "global" scope.

"['Wanted 2'] follows immediately at the end of the first movie and the fraternity is down in America. But there's an international fraternity, which we had in the [miniseries] as well. There [were] five fraternities across the world and [Wesley] is out there being hunted by the other guys."

"We've been going back and forth with some ideas, but there's a lot of people to please," explained Millar. "There's Angelina Jolie, there's [director] Timur [Bekmambetov] and there's Universal. Everybody is a perfectionist on it, so nobody wants to come in and cash the check and take off. Everybody wants it to be good. And the first movie made $340 million, so the bar is pretty high. It's not as if we started small and this could hopefully get a bit bigger. This has got to be mega now because the last one made a lot of money and people are expecting a lot from it."

So, the screenplay is almost at the stage where people are getting happy with it," added Millar. "Some people had problems with it a few months ago and some people didn't like the draft that was around [prior to that]." [MTV Splash Page]

James McAvoy joins The Conspirator

It's been a rumor for a while, but now it's official. James will be starring with Robin Wright Penn in Robert Redford's The Conspirator. The film chronicles the events after President Lincoln's assassination.

The film is set to start shooting in October. Wright Penn will play Mary Surratt, the only woman among a group charged with conspiring to kill the president. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, an idealistic young war hero who reluctantly defends Surratt and in the process comes to believe she is innocent.

So, James McAvoy might not be in 'Wanted 2' ?

Earlier this week Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov confirmed that he had started pre-production for Wanted 2 and had found a way to bring back Angelina Jolie's character, Fox. He didn't actually mention James McAvoy, but I assumed, like a few others that James was automatically doing a sequel. Mark Millar (the writer of the Wanted comic books) confirmed in September of 2008 that not only were there two sequels that were greenlit, but that James McAvoy had signed on for both sequels. But, Cinematical seems to think that McAvoy's return is even less likely than Angelina Jolie's:

Jolie might not be the only familiar face returning to the comic book flick, although it's not who you might think. Bekmabetov has already hinted that Kostya Khabenskiy could return as The Exterminator, and Terrence Stamp seems to think he'll be a part of the sequel as well. But the big question mark hanging over the film is still: "What about James McAvoy?" Well, I wouldn't hold your breath, because it looks like his return is even less likely than Jolie's. Bekmabetov doesn't even mention McAvoy in the interview, and the Scottish actor appears to be booked solid for the coming months. Although, if Bekmabetov is willing to bring people back from the dead, who knows what he might come up with to get McAvoy back in the picture.

I have no idea what to make of this, but I'll keep you posted.
