Down and dirty: watch the first trailer for Irvine Welsh's Filth
A talking tapeworm is the least of James McAvoy's problems in Filth, the new adaptation of Irvine "Trainspotting" Welsh's novel. In this definitely 18-certificate trailer, we see booze flow, punches thrown, sex had – but that's hardly a surprise, this is Irvine Welsh after all

James McAvoy: interviews

James McAvoy: 'Esquire UK' Feature April 2013

James McAvoy: 'Esquire UK' Feature April 2013
James McAvoy shows off his piercing blue eyes in this brand new feature from Esquire UK‘s April 2013 issue, featuring cover girl Rachel Weisz.
Here is what the 33-year-old Welcome To The Punch actor had to share with the mag:
On being a geek at heart: “I am a nerd but I don’t dive head-first into any fiefdom of nerdiness, except for maybe Star Trek.”
On his new film Welcome to the Punch: “Don’t get me wrong. I love British cinema, but there’s also a place for ostentatious, balls-out entertainment.”
On the skill of playing audiences: “Big year, really, for me, in terms of getting to play somebody that challenges the audience more than I have done in the past. As an actor, you’ve got to try and make the audience like you, even if you’re doing bad things. I quite like that dynamic.”
The full interview appears in the April issue of Esquire UK, on newsstands now, and is also available as a digital edition!

His new life role as a dad took James McAvoy off our screens for a while but now he’s back, busy and doing as much ‘growing up’ as his two-year-old son.
Stroking a dagger-shaped (and faintly ginger) beard, James McAvoy is ruminating on the odder, insider-y aspects of his career – the foibles of friends, the strange relations with your family, the quirky casting choices, the methods of collaborators.

James McAvoy: casting rumours and 'Trance' poster

Rumour: James McAvoy contender to play the new Crow
From Bleeding Cool:
Though their rumour comes with an in-built disclaimer, Bloody Disgusting say that James McAvoy is considering the star role in a reboot of The Crow. This makes him the third high-profile name associated with this do-over after Bradley Cooper and Mark Wahlberg.
None of those guys really seems to click into the role for me, though I like all of them just fine in other places, other roles. Perhaps I’m just not seeing it yet. Perhaps I’m just too wed to a Crow I have in my head, from the James O’Barr comics and original Alex Proyas movie.
The logistical catch with this casting is McAvoy’s commitment to filming X-Men: Days of Future Past. This might prevent him from taking up another big project this year, or at least before the winter. If The Crow will have to roll this spring or summer, then there’s not even a small chance of whiteface for McAvoy.

James McAvoy: Macbeth reviews, and 'Neverwhere' cast photo

James McAvoy in Macbeth, Trafalgar Studios, review
Macbeth, starring James McAvoy, packs a powerful punch says Charles Spencer.
4 out of 5 stars
James McAvoy and Claire Foy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios
James McAvoy and Claire Foy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios. Photo: Johan Persson
James McAvoy, best known as a film actor, proves a commanding Macbeth, and the relationship with his wife is powerfully caught. The text makes it clear that the couple had a child who died in infancy and McAvoy and Claire Foy as Lady Macbeth suggest both an undertow of grief and the sense that their murderous ambition is some kind of sick compensation for their loss.
At the start it is Foy’s Lady Macbeth who leads the way, like a bossy schoolgirl who has set her heart on becoming head-girl. Unlike his morally blind wife, however, Macbeth knows what murder will cost, and initially at least, has a strong sense of what is right. McAvoy thrillingly suggests a man on the rack of his own guilty mind who learns that the only way to secure his position and silence his conscience is to become inured to atrocity with further killings.
He also does full justice to the haunting poetry of the last act in which Macbeth realises just what he has lost - not least himself and any sense of purpose or meaning in life. It is the reason that Macbeth is a genuinely tragic character and not just a serial killer.

Danny Boyle's 'Trance': James McAvoy Blows Minds, Literally...and Gorily — NSFW Trailer
James McAvoy in Trailer for Danny Boyle's 'Trance'
From Hollywood.com:
And now for something completely crazy: the trailer for Danny Boyle’s upcoming hypnotism/art-world thriller, Trance (in limited release April 5). The Slumdog Millionaire director seems to be creating a psychotic hybrid of Inception and The Thomas Crown Affair in which James McAvoy plays a sap who undergoes hypnosis by a scheming Rosario Dawson.
He’s either hypnotized into unwittingly helping Dawson and her fellow baddies steal a painting or he’s undergoing a second round of hypnosis to unpack and recover memories from a heist he’s already had purged from his consciousness. If you ask us, McAvoy’s cryptic response to whether he’s ever submitted to hypnosis before—“Uh, no, at least not that I can remember”—favors the latter interpretation. Either way, Boyle is abandoning his Slumdog and 127 Hours Oscar-bat schmaltz and heading back into nasty, gnarly Shallow Grave and Trainspotting territory. Blood spurts. Fingernails are ripped out. Nubile bodies are on display. And people can still talk even after having half their noggin blown off. (Be forewarned, that list image, occurring at the 1:12 is really grisly.)
Thought that Boyle couldn’t get any crazier than when he had a Mary Poppins army battle a giant, inflatable Voldemort at the Olympics Opening Ceremony last summer? Looks like he’s topped himself.

Check out this slightly NSFW (courtesy of the bloody mayhem) clip:

James McAvoy: 'Macbeth' rehearsals, new 'Trance' poster

Macbeth Rehearsals (pics)

More at James McAvoy Central

Let James McAvoy hypnotize you with a new poster for Danny Boyle's 'Trance'

Star James McAvoy is central to the eye-straining U.K. one-sheet, which boasts the ominous words "Don't Be A Hero" in plain white text across the middle. So what does it all mean? Guess you'll have to wait and see when the film hits U.S. shores sometime later this year.
"Trance" synopsis:

'Trance,' directed by Oscar®-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle ('Slumdog Millionaire,' '127 Hours') and co-written by Oscar®-nominated long term collaborator John Hodge ('Shallow Grave,' 'Trainspotting') is a seductive and enigmatic thriller starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson.

Fine art auctioneer Simon (McAvoy), in league with a gang led by underworld boss Franck (Cassel), plots the audacious theft of a masterpiece by Goya from a major public auction. When Simon double-crosses the gang during the robbery, Franck retaliates violently and knocks him unconscious.

In the aftermath of the heist, Simon sticks stubbornly – and perhaps shrewdly – to his claim that the violent trauma has left him with no memory of where he stashed the artwork.

Unable to coerce the painting’s location from Simon, Franck and his associates reluctantly join forces with a charismatic hypnotherapist (Dawson) in a bid to get him to talk. But as they journey deeper into Simon’s jumbled psyche the boundaries between reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur and the stakes rise faster and far more dangerously than any of the players could have anticipated.

James McAvoy: 'Trance' images and 'X-Men' hints

James McAvoy spies, Rosario Dawson sprints in first images from Danny Boyle's 'Trance'
We've been waiting a good long while for Danny Boyle's Trance. While the British filmmakers last movie, 127 Hours, only came out in 2010, he began talking about it all the way back in May of 2011, before he started his work on the opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games. But with the film close to completion and confirmed for a March 2013 release date in the UK, we should soon start seeing a lot more from the movie - and that starts with the first official images.

USA Today has published the first pictures from the heist thriller, including three stills and one behind-the-scenes look at Boyle making the movie. The shots give us our first look at Rosario Dawson, James McAvoy and Vincent Cassell in their respective roles, and you can check out all of them at the source to see them in their highest resolution.

Partially based on a 2001 British TV movie with the same title, the story follows a fine-art auctioneer (McAvoy) who is working with a group of professional theives (led by Vincent Cassell) to steal a valuable work of art. When he is struck with a case of amnesia, however, and the painting is lost, he turns to a hypnotherapist (Dawson) to try and rediscover the lost treasure. While the film will be out early next year over in Europe, Fox Searchlight Pictures has not yet said where they will be putting the thriller on the release calendar. Given the amount of success Boyle has had during award season, don't be too surprised if we have to wait a little while for Trance.

Will bald Prof. X battle Sentinels in 'Days of Future Past'?
Will bald Prof. X battle Sentinels in Days of Future Past?
X-Men: Days of Future Past is bringing out the big guns. Actor James McAvoy, who plays a young Charles Xavier, recently discussed some changes in the upcoming sequel. The landscape is totally different, and so are the characters. The X-Men could encounter their biggest foes yet.
McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, will be joined by their older counterparts, Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. Since the film deals with time travel, their appearances could be easily explained. Now that we've seen the team's origin in First Class, it's time to get down to the good stuff.
First off, will we ever see those overbearing robots called Sentinels? Even though Mark Millar (Marvel's Property Creative Consultant) has hinted at their inclusion, McAvoy is staying vague. He told Total Film, "As a fan of the X-Men world and lexicon, I share lots of other fans' hopes and dreams and I'd like to see Sentinels ..."
In X-Men 3: The Last Stand, there was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo of a Sentinel's severed head. Unfortunately, it wasn't from a legitimate battle. It was part of a Danger Room training exercise. Giant robots may be a nebulous subject, but Professor Xavier's hair isn't.
Prior to the release of First Class a lot of us wondered about two things: Professor X's walking and his luscious locks. McAvoy revealed that his character's hair loss is a topic of discussion for Days.
"[Screenwriter] Simon Kinberg and I had a chat about it and we came up with a whole bunch of idea about how, why and where he might go bald. It's got to be linked to the plot though," McAvoy explained. "In the comics, he lost his hair as soon as his powers awakened, and we clearly didn't follow the source material. It can't just be that he looks in the mirror at the end of the film and goes 'Oh [frick], I'm losing my hair'.
Are you ready for Prof. X to embrace his baldness?
X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in theaters July 18, 2014.

Lewinsky's single-minded attempt to make the most of this opportunity to capture his foe slowly gives way as he realises there is more to the case than meets the eye.

Welcome to the Punch will arrive in cinemas on March 15.

Kelly MacDonald & James McAvoy: new film project?

Inbetweeners producer to put Scots classic on film

The Silver Darlings – the Neil M Gunn book about Scottish herring fisherfolk – is set for the silver screen. And it is the producer of bawdy smash-hit comedy The Inbetweeners, which made
£45 million at the British box office, who is turning his attention from English teenagers to invest in a movie adaptation of the classic Scottish novel.

Christopher Young, the Skye-based producer, whose company Young Films made millions last year from the movie based on the Channel 4 television sitcom, has bought the screen rights to the 1941 novel, which is set in the 19th-century fishing industry.
He hopes to turn Gunn’s novel into a multi-million film starring actors such as Kelly Macdonald, Daniel Day-Lewis and James McAvoy.

Young said: “I have recently acquired the rights to the book and I suppose for me things have changed considerably since The Inbetweeners movie. It has allowed me to think again about dream projects and we are looking at screenwriters at the moment. The context of the adaptation of The Silver Darlings is to make it a very successful, popular mainstream film. The book is a masterpiece, not known outside Scotland but known and loved in Scotland.”

The 600-page book is regarded as a masterpiece of Scottish literature. Published in 1941, it tells the story of Gaelic crofters who, having been driven off their land during the Clearances, seek their fortune at sea fishing for herring, or “Silver Darlings”.

The story centres around Catrine, a woman who loses her husband in a fishing accident and is determined that her son, Finn, will not suffer the same fate. However, when she falls in love with Robbie, captain of the most successful fishing boat in the harbour, Finn becomes dangerously drawn to the sea.
For many years playwright John McGrath, who wrote The Cheviot, The Stag And The Black, Black Oil, owned the film rights; he hoped to make a movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer as Catrine. In 1989, after making his first film, Venus Peter, Young had hoped to work with McGrath on the film adaptation of The Silver Darlings but it did not work out. However, the huge success of The Inbetweeners has allowed Young to secure the film rights and he hopes to attract top Scots and Irish actors in the lead roles with a budget under £10 million.

“I would make a point of developing the epic scale,” he said. “I think of it like a Western. In a way it could be similar to There Will Be Blood, which was very strong in evoking another world where there is human greed and where life is cheap.”

While fans of the juvenile adventures of Will, Simon, Jay and Neil in The Inbetweeners, may scratch their head at what would attract the producer to such an old-fashioned tale, the news has been greeted warmly by fans of the novel.

Willy Maley, professor of literature at Glasgow University, said: “That’s brilliant news, especially in the run-up to the independence referendum, as we need to celebrate the extraordinary and unique literary art that Scotland has produced, especially in a time of cuts and closures. The Silver Darlings is a beautiful and moving book, a modern Scottish classic.

“This magnificent novel remains one of the most memorable evocations of the lasting importance of community, the inexorable pull of the sea, and the healing power of love. There are richly rendered scenes of immense tenderness in it that still make me cry.”

John Archer, who runs Hopscotch Films and is a former Scottish Screen chief executive, said: “It’s great to see someone who has had huge popular success go back to doing something much more risky. There has been a film of Silver Darlings before, in 1947, with notoriously dodgy Scottish accents – one of the actors just gives up part way through. I look forward to seeing the new one.”

James McAvoy to play West End Macbeth

From Last King of Scotland to another Scottish king: James McAvoy to play Macbeth
Last King of Scotland and Atonement actor James McAvoy is to make an appearance at London's West End playing the title role in Jamie Lloyd's Macbeth.
He will appear in the inaugural production of a season of work at the Trafalgar Studios, Whitehall called Trafalgar Transformed.
McAvoy was last on stage in 2009 in the Olivier-nominated production Three Days of Rain at the Apollo Theatre.
His upcoming film appearances include Danny Boyle’s Trance, Welcome to the Punch, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Filth (2013), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).
The actor recently dropped out of the as yet unnamed Wikileaks film after work commitments conflicted.
Lloyd’s production of the Shakespeare play will be set in a dystopian Scotland brutalised by war as Macbeth begins his tormented struggle for power fuelled by ambition and paranoia under a toxic fog.
Lloyd said "We hope to welcome new and diverse audiences to the West End and I am very excited to engage with schools and other groups via a series of bespoke workshops and masterclasses.”
All tickets will be £15 on Mondays, half of which will be made available through an outreach scheme targeted towards schools and first-time theatregoers.
The other half will be released monthly to the public on the first day of each month, starting on 1 February 2013, and will be available online or at Trafalgar Studios box office. Additionally, day seats will be available at £10 for all performances, Tuesday through Saturday.
The production will run from 9 February to 27 April.

Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere headed to BBC Radio with X-Men’s James McAvoy
James McAvoy, Anthony Head, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Bernard Cribbins will star in a BBC Radio production of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, set to air in the first part of 2013.
There’s a lot more details below, and lots to be excited about, including the fact that Gaiman is presently working on the American Gods pilot.

Neil Gaiman posted the photo above to his Tumblr, along with the following message (excerpted from a longer, more general post):
Right now, also due to being in the wrong country — like this minute — I’m missing this, which arrived a few hours ago: [photo]
That’s left to right, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Harewood,  Natalie Dormer, Dirk Maggs, James McAvoy, David Schofield and Anthony Head, all gathered today to record the BBC Radio 4/Radio 4 Extra production of NEVERWHERE.
(It’ll start on Radio 4 and then go over to Radio 4 extra.) The adaptation is by Dirk Maggs, who did the last three Hitchhiker’s Guide Radio adaptations. He’s co-directing it with producer Heather Larmour, who is the one who went off and made this happen after a small enthusiastic chat in a London coffee shop much earlier this year — the kind of conversation that you have that normally just leaves you feeling happy, but doesn’t actually turn into anything real. This time it did.
The cast includes…
James McAvoy                Richard
Natalie Dormer                 Door
David Harewood               Marquis
Sophie Okonedo               Hunter
Benedict Cumberbatch      Islington
Anthony Head                   Croup
David Schofield                 Vandemar
Bernard Cribbins               Old Bailey
Romola Garai                    Jessica
Christopher Lee                Earl of Earl’s Court
Andrew Sachs                    Tooley
George Harris                    Abbot
Don Gilet                            Fulingous, Ruislip, Blackfriar
Abdul Salis                          Sable, Sump, Clarence, Homeless Man
Paul Chequer                     Gary, Guard 2
Lucy Cohu                          Lamia
Yasmin Paige                     Anaesthesia, Tenant 2 – female, Match girl
Johnny Vegas                    Lord Ratspeaker
Stephen Marcus                Varney, Homeless man, Letting agent, Guard 1
Karen Archer                      Sylvia, Old Woman, Dream Hawker, Mother…
…and lots more (including an author, who recorded his bits last month). It will go out in six episodes.
Am I excited? I am. Very much so.
(Also, CHRISTOPHER LEE IS GOING TO BE SAYING LINES I WROTE. This makes me happier than I have any right to be.)
It will be broadcast somewhere in the first 4 months of 2013. And you will be able to listen to it wherever you are in the world, using the BBC’s iPlayer.
I’m currently listening to Tor Dot Com’s AMERICAN GODS MIX TAPE while I work on the HBO American Gods pilot episode. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2012/11/the-complete-american-gods-mix-tape
Right. Back to work…

'X-Men': Fassbender, McKellen, McAvoy, Stewart Unite for 'Days Of Future Past'
The Avengers aren't the only ones who get to assemble. X-Men: First Class producer Bryan Singer announced via Twitter on Tuesday that his main players from that film Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult will all return to revive their roles for the upcoming film X-Men: Days of Future Past. Singer, who will direct the fifth X-Men film (sixth, if you count the retroactive sequel Wolverine), told followers "I'd like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, & Nicholas Hoult to #XMEN for #DaysOfFuturePast."

That wasn't the only good news about actor reprisals that Singer had for X-Men fans when he also posted, "Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 & @SirPatStew are joining the cast of #XMEN #DaysOfFuturePast #magneto #professorX." That's right, young Magneto (Fassbender) and young Professor X (McAvoy) will be in the same film as old Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen) and old Professor X (Sir Patrick Stewart). In fact, with Days of Future Past's time travel plot line, it's very possible that the two pairs could meet (and also make our heads spin with timeline logic).

With so many stars and characters returning for the First Class sequel, could that mean that we'll also see a variation Ellen Page's Kitty Pryde (a major character in the Days of Future Past comic book) in the picture as well? If the recent announcement is any indication, anything is possible.

James McAvoy

Actor James McAvoy is supporting a charity appeal to raise funds to improve the lives of African street children
Star James McAvoy's supporting role for Manchester charity helping street children
Actor James McAvoy is supporting a charity appeal to raise funds to improve the lives of African street children
James McAvoy was so shocked when he witnessed the real-life drama faced by street children in Africa that he is now supporting a Manchester-charity fighting to improve the lives of youngsters.
The star first became aware of the heartbreaking struggle of thousands of children, who wake up in plastic bags, drains or rubbish dumps every day with little chance of finding food, when he starred in Last King of Scotland which was filmed in Uganda in 2006.
McAvoy was so touched by his experience that he became a passionate supporter of Retrak, which helps to provide homes for street children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.
McAvoy shot to fame when he appeared in the TV series Shameless. He fell in love with his co-star Anne-Marie Duff and the couple have since married and had a son. The actor took time out from shooting his next film Trance, a drama thriller directed by Radcliffe’s Danny Boyle, to urge support for Retrak’s ZERO Appeal which runs until December 5. He said: "No human being, never mind a child, should wake up in the morning not knowing how they’ll get through the day.
"The street restricts these children’s access to food, water, shelter and denies them love and instead offers neglect, exploitation and abuse in abundance.
"That’s why I support Retrak’s call for a world where no child is forced to live on the streets."

To support the Retrak ZERO Appeal visit www.retrak.org/zero , email zero@retrak.org or call 0161 485 6685. To donate £10 text: ‘ZERO12 £10’ to 70070.

James McAvoy

James McAvoy and Hayley Atwell take to the Donmar stage for an afternoon of tragedy
You don't realise how little you actually get to hear James McAvoy's Scottish brogue. So little in fact that the first few lines he spoke this afternoon, at the Donmar's rehearsed reading of Bajazet, had me thinking he was putting it on.
It is at once a testament to his skill at adopting accents for his many film and TV performances and a shame that he doesn't get to play roles where he can use his own lovely, natural voice. I so want to hear more of it and @_gabriellasf is right he must play Macbeth (just not at the Globe).
But James McAvoy's Scottish accent was just one of the bag of treats of this afternoon's one off. Joining McAvoy in a seated performance where much is said in just the manner of turning the script pages were Hayley Atwell, Ruth Negga and Alex Jennings. It's the sort of cast list that you couldn't ever imagine being brought together for a fully fledged production but such is the joy of rehearsed readings. We were also treated to a brief introduction by Alan Hollinghurst, who translated the Jean Rancine play for a production at the Almeida back in 1990 and the Donmar's current production of Berenice in which Mrs McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff, is starring.
The two plays are different beasts he said in that the latter is more subtle in its tragedy and the former a blood bath by comparison.
I enjoyed Berenice and Bajazet equally, the first is a love triangle this is essentially about two women who love the same man and are prepared to make big sacrifices to get what they want. Bajazet (McAvoy) is caught in the middle. He's at the mercy of Roxane (Atwell) whom he doesn't love and who is his murderous old brother's lover and Atalide (Negga) his child-hood sweet heart who would rather he submitted to Roxane than face inevitable death.
Both of these Rancine plays have satisfyingly strong female characters and male characters facing interesting dilemmas. He writes wonderful exchanges between the sexes and I'd love to see a full production of Bajazet. In fact I was imagining it in my head as the actors spoke the words. Of course in my imagined version the dramatic denoument would all take place on stage and not be Greek tragedy-esque, reported action.
Rehearsed readings are nearly always rare treats wrapped up as something very casual and unassuming and this was no exception.
And if you want to hear Mr McAvoy talking in his natural voice here's a little YouTube clip of him on Parkinson - he just happens to be talking about filming sex scenes but don't worry about that ;0)

'Arthur Christmas' - DVD release on 6 November
Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy) in "Arthur Christmas," a Sony Pictures Animation film. The move is due out Tuesday.

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS (Sony) When 21st-century technology goes awry on Christmas Eve, Santa's younger son Arthur steps in to make sure that no child's gift is left behind. The animated comedy, from the same folks who made the "Wallace & Gromit" movies, is so full of clever visual humor and throwaway background jokes that you may need multiple viewings to take it all in. But what's more remarkable is the movie's overwhelming cheeriness and unabashed belief in believing. With voices by James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy. (PG; some mild rude humor)
