James McAvoy

James McAvoy and Hayley Atwell take to the Donmar stage for an afternoon of tragedy
You don't realise how little you actually get to hear James McAvoy's Scottish brogue. So little in fact that the first few lines he spoke this afternoon, at the Donmar's rehearsed reading of Bajazet, had me thinking he was putting it on.
It is at once a testament to his skill at adopting accents for his many film and TV performances and a shame that he doesn't get to play roles where he can use his own lovely, natural voice. I so want to hear more of it and @_gabriellasf is right he must play Macbeth (just not at the Globe).
But James McAvoy's Scottish accent was just one of the bag of treats of this afternoon's one off. Joining McAvoy in a seated performance where much is said in just the manner of turning the script pages were Hayley Atwell, Ruth Negga and Alex Jennings. It's the sort of cast list that you couldn't ever imagine being brought together for a fully fledged production but such is the joy of rehearsed readings. We were also treated to a brief introduction by Alan Hollinghurst, who translated the Jean Rancine play for a production at the Almeida back in 1990 and the Donmar's current production of Berenice in which Mrs McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff, is starring.
The two plays are different beasts he said in that the latter is more subtle in its tragedy and the former a blood bath by comparison.
I enjoyed Berenice and Bajazet equally, the first is a love triangle this is essentially about two women who love the same man and are prepared to make big sacrifices to get what they want. Bajazet (McAvoy) is caught in the middle. He's at the mercy of Roxane (Atwell) whom he doesn't love and who is his murderous old brother's lover and Atalide (Negga) his child-hood sweet heart who would rather he submitted to Roxane than face inevitable death.
Both of these Rancine plays have satisfyingly strong female characters and male characters facing interesting dilemmas. He writes wonderful exchanges between the sexes and I'd love to see a full production of Bajazet. In fact I was imagining it in my head as the actors spoke the words. Of course in my imagined version the dramatic denoument would all take place on stage and not be Greek tragedy-esque, reported action.
Rehearsed readings are nearly always rare treats wrapped up as something very casual and unassuming and this was no exception.
And if you want to hear Mr McAvoy talking in his natural voice here's a little YouTube clip of him on Parkinson - he just happens to be talking about filming sex scenes but don't worry about that ;0)

'Arthur Christmas' - DVD release on 6 November
Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy) in "Arthur Christmas," a Sony Pictures Animation film. The move is due out Tuesday.

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS (Sony) When 21st-century technology goes awry on Christmas Eve, Santa's younger son Arthur steps in to make sure that no child's gift is left behind. The animated comedy, from the same folks who made the "Wallace & Gromit" movies, is so full of clever visual humor and throwaway background jokes that you may need multiple viewings to take it all in. But what's more remarkable is the movie's overwhelming cheeriness and unabashed belief in believing. With voices by James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy. (PG; some mild rude humor)

James McAvoy & Bill Nighy interview for ‘Arthur Christmas’

An Aardman production (the people behind ‘Wallace & Gromit’ and ‘Chicken Run’) for Sony Pictures Animation, at last reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child’s question: ‘So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?’ The answer: Santa’s exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic – a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur, with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns. ‘Arthur Christmas’ features the voices of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen. The film is set for release November 11th in the UK, and November 23rd in the US.

Arthur is really spirited about his mission…

James McAvoy: Oh yeah, definitely. In the story every single child must receive a present on Christmas night, every single child in the world. What happens is that one night, one child doesn’t receive a present, and basically the international conglomerate organisation that is Christmas…..and the north pole, as run by Steve and Santa, they decide that actually that’s just 0.0000000000001% of a failure, and when you balance the books that’s ok, because the success rate is so high. Christmas has become a bit of a business, and Arthur decides that’s not good enough.

Grandsanta and Arthur’s relationship is a big part of the story.

Bill Nighy: Arthur’s naiveté is handy because he doesn’t quite see how pompous and daft Grandsanta is at the beginning, if he did he probably wouldn’t have set off! He doesn’t see through Grandsanta’s boastful ways until later on when everything starts to fall apart. But it’s a tender relationship, and in the end it’s a successful and important relationship for them both (laughs).

James McAvoy: Arthur looks up to Grandsanta, he really respects everyone in his family, he kinda wishes that he could be as involved as they are, or in Grandsanta’s case, were. He’s very much the guy who tells the stories, he’s been through it all, done it all, and Arthur likes to hear all the stories – whether or not they’re embellished or made up, it’s irrelevant, he just likes to hear the stories (laughs). Arthur is certainly a willing audience to Grandsanta. But then what happens is that him and Grandsanta go on the road and try to do a lot of the things Grandsanta has been telling him about, you actually find out that the truth and the reality may not match up with the stories.

Arthur is sort of the odd one out in an already odd family.

James McAvoy: Arthur is pretty much Christmas on legs. He lives in the North Pole so it’s hard to be the most Christmassy person in the world because you’ve got a lot of Christmas heads around you, and even though he’s among all those Christmas heads he is the main Christmas dude – in his head, not with anybody else, because everybody forgets about him and writes him off about being an eccentric…..and maybe a bit of an imbecile. But he cares about Christmas probably more than anyone else around him, including Santa, Grandsanta and his big brother Steve.

Aardman’s movies are always soulful and full of adventure….

James McAvoy: Yeah, ‘Arthur Christmas’ has all the humour, the action, the adventure, all the Christmassyness that all these Christmas movies need to have. But what I think ‘Arthur Christmas’ has got beyond that is that really strong spirit at the centre of it, which Aardman gives everything. And even though that this is a 3D….monster (laughs), it still has an Aardman soul. I think that’s really a wholesome and beautiful thing, I think that will make it a bit more special than the usual Christmas fare.

What was it like seeing your character for the first time?

Bill Nighy: When I saw the images for the first time I was thrilled by them, they are so clever, so witty. There’s a perfect balance between real and not real, it was a bit of a shock to see a bandy legged…balding, or rather bald (laughs), octogenarian bloke in short trousers with a beard, it made me think, “Why did they think of me?!” (Laughs) It was great.

James McAvoy - "Arthur Christmas" trailer | "Trance" location photos

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS Theatrical Trailer

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS stars the voices of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Ashley Jensen, and is directed by Sarah Smith.

Synopsis: Set on Christmas night, the story of Arthur Christmas at last reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child’s question: ‘So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?’ The answer: Santa’s exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic – a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur, with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns.

McAvoy leads the cast as Arthur, the good-natured but clumsy younger son of Santa. Arthur LOVES everything to do with Christmas; indeed, he is the only one in his family still captivated by the magic of the holiday. Laurie will play Arthur’s older brother Steve, heir to the reins, a cool, incredibly capable guy who has given the North Pole high-tech efficiency, military-style precision. Broadbent plays Santa, who pictures himself as the guy in charge at the North Pole, but is now more of a figurehead as the operation has outgrown him. Nighy plays Santa’s 136-year-old father, Grandsanta, a cranky old codger who hates the modern world, is always grumbling that Christmas ‘was better when I was Santa’ and has a tense relationship with Steve, who he calls ‘A postman with a spaceship.’ Jensen will play Bryony, a lowly elf from the Giftwrap Battalion, with an eager-to-please attitude and an obsession with wrapping and bows. Imelda Staunton rounds out the cast as Mrs. Santa, dedicated wife and mother to her husband and sons.

The movie will be released to theaters on November 23, 2011.
