Tony Curran: 'Defiance' updates, photos, interviews, etc

Sci-fi TV series 'Defiance' launches with video game: 'one world, two ways in'

What will Earth look like in the year 2046? Pretty beat up if a sprawling outdoor backlot for a new sci-fi TV series, tucked out of sight in an industrial section of Toronto's east end, is any indication.
"Defiance" launches simultaneously in Canada and the U.S. April 15 as both a TV series and a video game. Both Showcase and the U.S. cable channel Syfy will premiere it over two hours Monday at 10 p.m.
Earlier this year before TV critics in Los Angeles, Syfy president Dave Howe called it "one world, but with two ways in." Five years in the making, the series was planned all along as a way to unite "high-quality scripted television and online gaming in an unprecedented way."

NBCU's $100 Million Gamble on Syfy's 'Defiance'
The first TV series and video game to launch in tandem, the multiplatform event marks a critical test for the cable network.
Syfy is welcoming a two-headed baby into the world. The NBCUniversal-owned network in April is launching Defiance, a risky experiment in transmedia that pairs the most expensive series in the cable net's history with an equally pricey massively multiplayer online (MMO) video game. Each can be enjoyed on its own, but NBCU, which has invested close to $100 million in Defiance, needs both sci-fi fans and gamers -- two fickle groups -- to show up in big numbers to justify the expense.

Michael Nankin interview: Defiance, latex, TV pilots and more
With the launch of the Defiance series and TV show imminent, we spoke to producer and director Michael Nankin about its making...

The Syfy Channel is about to air what is surely its biggest experiment yet. Called Defiance, it’s a sci-fi series which not only employs some proven industry talent - not least writer Rockne S O’Bannon, of Alien Nation and SeaQuest DSV fame, director and producer Michael Nankin, who previously helmed episodes of Battlestar Galactica and Alphas - but also coincides with the launch of the online shooter of the same name.

In a media first, Defiance the TV series and Defiance the videogame will share characters and storylines, with events in the show replicated in the online experience, too. It’s a concept that has roped in the creative minds from both Syfy and Trion Worlds, cost an undisclosed sum of money, and will, if successful, no doubt pave the way for further ‘transmedia’ collaborations in the future.

Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth where multiple races of aliens live uneasily among humans, Defiance takes place in the ramshackle town of the same name. Roguishly handsome newcomer Nolan (Grant Bowler) provides our way into this grubby community, in which bitter rivalries and cultural chasms constantly threaten its stability. As much a Western as a sci-fi show, Defiance is infused with a lightness of touch and a faintly kitsch sensibility, which is far removed from the brooding, post-911 atmosphere of Battlestar Galactica, whose success Syfy will no doubt be hoping to replicate here.

Ahead of the Defiance pilot’s premiere on the 16th April, we had a chance to talk to Nankin about what we can expect from the show, the pitfalls in developing a TV series and game at the same time, and the perils of directing a show full of alien prosthetics, contact lenses, and brightly-coloured wigs...

‘Defiance’ Series Premiere: Watch the First 14 Minutes Now
With a widespread marketing campaign and a multi-platform tie-in video game launching just shy of simultaneously for Defiance, Syfy is working hard to get the word out about their new sci-fi/western series. Now, three weeks prior to the show’s launch, the cable network is releasing the first 14 minutes and 27 seconds of the pilot episode.

From Kevin Murphy (Caprica), the show is set in a near-future earth that has been wrecked and re-shaped by invading aliens. The show stars Grant Bowler (True Blood), Stephanie Leonidas (MirrorMask), Jamie Murray (Warehouse 13), Graham Greene (Twilight: New Moon), and Julie Benz (Dexter) as the residents of a small “border town” called Defiance, which has risen from the remnants of St. Louis.

Here’s the official synopsis for the show from Syfy:

In the year 2046, it’s a new Earth – with new rules. Over thirty years after various alien races arrived on Earth, the landscape is completely altered, terraformed nearly beyond recognition. To the town of Defiance, on what used to be St. Louis, comes the mysterious Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his charge, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas). As they settle into town – overseen by the mayor, Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz) and filled with residents like the powerful Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene), enterprising lounge owner Kenya (Mia Kirshner) and the ambitious, alien Tarrs (Tony Curran and Jaime Murray) – events begin to unfold that threaten the fragile peace this border town has fought for.

Defiance premieres April 15th @9pm on Syfy

Defiance Panel with Tony Curran and Jaime Murray at MCM Birmingham Comic Con
Defiance makes for a uniquely immersive property, in that it is both a MMO video game and also an epic sci-fi drama series. Jaime Murray and Tony Curran were at the MCM Birmingham Comic Con to talk about the upcoming TV series that they both star in.

The show follows on from the aftermath of a great war between various races of aliens and humans. With the Earth unstable and a distinct lack of any government, both aliens and humans realise that they’ll have to cooperate if they wish to survive. The frontier town of Defiance is of the few with a sense of order, co-founded by Datak Tarr (Tony Curran), a Castithan who is happy to work alongside other races and wishes for a better future for his family. However, his wife Stahma Tarr (Jaime Murray) wishes to break from the traditional roles expected of her by her caste and at times goads her husband into gaining more control.

“They couldn’t agree how we should look,” said Jaime on her and Tony’s appearance in the show. “They wanted us to look human enough, be the closest to human so you can relate to us, but still alien.”

“Eventually once we got it, it takes about two hours to apply the wigs,” said Tony. “There are other characters there that have more prosthetics, more alien like as it were. We’re alien enough, we do have our own language.”

“I learnt loads of alien,” said Jaime of the new language she had to learn for her character, created by David Peterson who is also responsible for the Dothraki language in Game of Thrones. “Our language is spoken very, very fast. I listened to these tapes and I thought, ‘Oh my God!’ I mean I mess up the English language; I don’t need another language to mess up! I really learnt it, and I just said it for weeks.”

Tony also praised the show’s costume supervisor, Colleen Atwood. “She’s done mainly all of Tim Burton’s movies. She’s incredibly talented. [The costumes had] a nice look to it; it didn’t try too hard to have this alien exterior.”

“The costumes, they ended up being quite period, quite vintage,” said Jaime. “I wear a lot of corsets, I’m often laced into stuff. I need someone else to dress me in the mornings! Sometimes I have to have them come to the loo with me!”

BWW TV: Chatting with Alan Cumming about his one-man Macbeth!
From Broadway World:
Direct from acclaimed, sold-out engagements at The National Theatre of Scotland and the Lincoln Center Festival, Tony and Olivier Award winner ("Cabaret") and two-time Emmy nominee ("The Good Wife") Alan Cumming will return to Broadway this spring in a one-man interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Cumming just helped intsall the marquee at the Barrymore Theatre and BroadwayWorld was there to chat with the leading man about the show. Check out what he had to say below!
Produced by Ken Davenport, The National Theatre of Scotland's Macbeth will play a strictly limited 73-performance engagement at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street).
A tour-de-force performance directed by Tony Award winner John Tiffany ("Once") and Andrew Goldberg ("Black Watch"), this Macbeth is set in a clinical room deep within a dark psychiatric unit. Cumming is the lone patient, reliving the infamous story and inhabiting each role himself. Closed circuit television cameras watch the patient's every move as the walls of the psychiatric ward come to life in a visually stunning multi-media theatrical experience of Shakespeare's notorious tale of desire, ambition and the supernatural.

James McAvoy: 'Macbeth' rehearsals, new 'Trance' poster

Macbeth Rehearsals (pics)

jamesmcavoycentral001.jpg
More at James McAvoy Central

Let James McAvoy hypnotize you with a new poster for Danny Boyle's 'Trance'

Star James McAvoy is central to the eye-straining U.K. one-sheet, which boasts the ominous words "Don't Be A Hero" in plain white text across the middle. So what does it all mean? Guess you'll have to wait and see when the film hits U.S. shores sometime later this year.
"Trance" synopsis:

'Trance,' directed by Oscar®-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle ('Slumdog Millionaire,' '127 Hours') and co-written by Oscar®-nominated long term collaborator John Hodge ('Shallow Grave,' 'Trainspotting') is a seductive and enigmatic thriller starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson.

Fine art auctioneer Simon (McAvoy), in league with a gang led by underworld boss Franck (Cassel), plots the audacious theft of a masterpiece by Goya from a major public auction. When Simon double-crosses the gang during the robbery, Franck retaliates violently and knocks him unconscious.

In the aftermath of the heist, Simon sticks stubbornly – and perhaps shrewdly – to his claim that the violent trauma has left him with no memory of where he stashed the artwork.

Unable to coerce the painting’s location from Simon, Franck and his associates reluctantly join forces with a charismatic hypnotherapist (Dawson) in a bid to get him to talk. But as they journey deeper into Simon’s jumbled psyche the boundaries between reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur and the stakes rise faster and far more dangerously than any of the players could have anticipated.

'Alan Cumming Snaps!': The 'Good Wife' actor's Photography Debut (SLIDESHOW)
When he's not destroying political enemies as Eli Gold on the CBS drama The Good Wife, Alan Cumming practices a different kind of aim-and-shoot. From now until Nov. 4, the Scottish-born actor's first ever photography exhibition drops down at the Paul Smith gallery in Los Angeles. The concerns of Alan Cumming Snaps! aren't exotic so much as exotically familiar: the OBE presents cherries, knees, and -- because how can you not -- some truly charming selfies.

Scroll through our favorites from the show below, all of which have been filtered through an "app that makes them square and saturates the colors, like a Polaroid," according to Cumming's artist's statement. Three guesses on what that could be!

Alan Cumming on shooting videos of his big nights out
From New York Post:
Alan Cumming is a video vigilante, sometimes turning the camera on himself.
“I see things on the street and video them just in case,” he told us at an event for Peter Gabriel’s Witness, a human rights organization that teaches activists how to take footage, at Roseland on Thursday.
The Good Wife star Cumming said, “Sometimes on my phone in the morning after a big night out I look at the things I have taken like, ‘Oh.’ There is evidence like that of some disastrous occurrence.”

Douglas Henshall – My Autumn

This versatile actor has worked all over the world – but he was blown away by the welcome in Shetland

Filming Shetland went really well. I enjoyed working there very much because of how friendly, welcoming and accommodating all the people were. They couldn’t have done any more for us – we did some Up Helly Aa scenes and the people who participated in that were amazing. They looked fantastic in all their gear. All the people who helped us with locations were great, too.

I had never been to Shetland before, it had always been a kind of mythological place for me. One of the nice things about my job is that you get to go to places. I hope we make another Shetland drama because then I’ll get to go back there. Everybody who was involved wants there to be another one, so fingers crossed. I think it’ll be good – we certainly all did everything we could to make it work.

My character is different to most TV detectives. He’s a pretty happy, solid guy just trying to do his job. He’s not battling any demons.

I stayed in the Kvelsdro Hotel in Lerwick (check), which was great. We didn’t get much time off while we were there, but we did have one great night in Lerwick Boat Club where a lot of musicians came and played. We sat and listened and also had a bit of a hooly and it was fantastic. I’ll remember that for a long time.

Now I’m looking forward to doing some theatre in the autumn. I’m appearing in the Howard Brenton play, 55 Days, at the Hampstead Theatre in London. I play Oliver Cromwell. There’s nothing quite like live theatre, but I wouldn’t say I have a preference between theatre, TV and films. I like the variety.

Autumn’s always a time to look forward to. It’s my favourite time of year, in fact, with all the fantastic colours – especially in Scotland.

I do quite a lot of travelling, and I’ve been to some fantastic places. I went to Buenos Aires with a production of Macbeth, and that was a city I really liked. Any city where the government building is pink has to have something going for it. I also made a film in India, and that’s the most extraordinary place. I’d like to go back there again.

I’m not sure where I’ll be going next – I’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully I’ll get some time to relax. I like playing poker – it’s nice to have to use your mind in a completely different way. It takes me out of myself. I also like to play a bit of tennis, and do a bit of cooking, but most of all I just like to spend time with my friends.

Douglas, who hails from Renfrewshire, plays the lead role of detective Jimmy Perez in Shetland, a two-part drama written by David Kane, and adapted from the books by Ann Cleeves. Perhaps best known as the academic action man Nick Cutter in Primeval, his many other TV credits include South Riding, The Silence and Collision. Shetland will air on BBC 1 soon – keep an eye on the schedules.

  • In the Dark Half (2012) Trailer

Source: YouTube

Midlands What’s On review:
"A thriller set in the rural outskirts of Bristol, In The Dark Half lays on the atmosphere as thick as it can. The sound editing takes up most of the slack in this tale of grief and single parenthood, but the performances are not up to snuff. Having delivered two excellent turns in Tamara Drewe and Hanna, Jessica Barden has shown what a good actress she can be. But as a lonely fifteen-year-old haunted by the boy next door, she is unable to make us believe. In fact, everything about the film is unconvincing, right up to its inexplicable climax."
