Meet the Scots stars of Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones has proved to be a huge success and has catapulted its Scots stars to the attention of audiences worldwide.
Here are the Scottish actors making it big on the fantasy TV show, and to get you back into the world of Westeros, here's the season 3 trailer.
Richard Madden (Robb Stark) 26 year old Richard Madden, from Elderslie in Renfrewshire, graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2007. He began his career with theatre roles at the Arches and the Citizens Theatre, and in London he played Romeo at the Globe’s production of Romeo and Juliet.
He’s had parts in TV series Hope Springs and last year’s BBC adaptation of Birdsong. He’s currently dating the new Doctor Who assistant Jenna-Louise Coleman, he has been named Most Stylish Male at the Scottish Style Awards and in 2010 made the cut for Esquire’s Hottest Stars.
Rose Leslie (Ygritte) Aberdeen-born Rose Leslie has some strong ancestral blood: she is the daughter of the chieftain of Clan Leslie, Sebastian Arbuthnot-Leslie, and grew up in the 15th century Lickleyhead Castle. Rose won a Scottish BAFTA for Best New Talent for her debut role in the Scottish film New Town in 2009. The 26 year old will also be recognisable to Downton Abbey fans, playing Gwen in series 1 – the maid with ambitions to become a secretary.
Emun Elliott (Marillion) Emun Elliott was born and raised by Edinburgh’s seaside, Portobello, and has Iranian ancestry on his father’s side. The 29 year old toured the world as Squaddie Private Fraser on stage in Black Watch, and had parts in Scottish TV series’ Monarch of the Glen and Lip Service. In 2009 film magazine Screen International named him as ‘one to watch’ – a prestigious platform for an up and coming actor. He played flight engineer Chance in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and last year he also had roles in successful shows including sitcom Threesome, and the BBC drama The Paradise.
Kate Dickie (Lady Lysa Arryn) The East Kilbride native is most known for her part in the film Red Road, winning a Scottish BAFTA and a British Independent film award. Making her TV debut playing ‘young girl’ in an episode of Rab C Nesbitt, Kate Dickie has gone on to appear in Prometheus, along with Emun Elliot, as well as having parts in Taggart, Tinseltown and Still Game. She lives in Kelvinbridge with partner Kenny and daughter Molly.
Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont) 51 year old Iain Glen, from Edinburgh, is a former Edinburgh Academy pupil and he honed his craft at RADA. He is brother to Hamish Glen, once the artistic director of the Dundee Repertory Theatre. Iain has had a wide-ranging career that has included the Resident Evil series, the BBC’s Ripper Street, Spooks and Doctor Who. He also played Sir Richard Carlisle in Downton Abbey – the newspaper tycoon who tries to woo Lady Mary.
Ron Donachie (Ser Rodrik Cassel) Ron Donachie is originally from Dundee and studied at Glasgow University. The 56 year old has had supporting roles in Titanic and The Jungle Book, as well as parts many major british TV series over the years, including Heartbeat, Doctor Who, Rebus, The Bill and Waterloo Road.
Rory McCann (Sandor Clegane)) Rory McCann is probably most recognised as the Porridge man in a vest and kilt in the advert for Scott’s Porage Oats. The 43 year old actor, who is 6ft 6, was a painter on the Forth Road Bridge before winning acclaim for his role in the 2002 Scottish TV series the Book Club. He made his film debut in Oliver Stone’s Alexander and has also had parts in Hot Fuzz and Clash of the Titans.
James Cosmo (Jeor Mormont) The 64 year old actor from Clydebank is son of actor James Copeland. He has been a mainstay of British TV since the 1970s, as well as a stint on Take the High Road, and is recognisable in grizzly roles in films including Highlander, Braveheart, Trainspotting and Troy, and a softer role as Father Christmas in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Kate Dickie: soul searching interview

Soul Searching: Kate Dickie
When I was seven ...
We lived in a cottage on a country estate near Cupar, Angus, and I could always be found in the garden with my dad, who was the gardener. I remember running about in my shorts, digging in the garden and climbing trees.
My dad would tell amazing stories – all from his imagination. One was about a baker called Mr Bun who made magic cakes. If you happened to make a wish when you took a bite, it would come true.
He would hide Opal Fruits in the greenhouses and I would go looking for them, believing fairies had left them.
The first time my heart was broken ...
I was seven and my best friend Gary Harrison moved away. We had known each other since we were toddlers and went everywhere together. I have always wondered what happened to him.
The wisest thing my grandmother told me ...
Always be true to yourself.
The biggest adversity I have overcome ...
I have bunions so probably having to get my bare feet out on screen.
My motto for life ...
"Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a song bird will come." It's from a little book of Eastern wisdom I carry about everywhere with me.
My soul mate is ...
My partner Kenny. We have been together for 14 years. He is so special, kind and handsome and has always been there for me. I love him to bits.
Not many people know that ...
I've been arachnophobic since I was two or three. My sister was in the top bunk in our bedroom and there was a spider on the ceiling. It suddenly dropped on to her face and she flipped out. I got upset too and was screaming and crying. The fear has got worse as I've got older.
The most inspiring book I've read was ...
The Horrific Sufferings Of The Mind-Reading Monster Hercules Barefoot: His Wonderful Love and Terrible Hatred by Carl-Johan Vallgren. It's about two children born at the same time in 1813. One is a beautiful woman and the other a deformed monster that people can barely look at. It's an amazing and strange book that has always stuck with me.
If ever I feel lonely I ...
Get a cuddle from my daughter, Molly, eight, and Kenny.
What I look for in a friend is ...
Kindness, someone I can talk to easily and who understands how bonkers I am.
The first person I ring when I'm upset is ...
Kenny. He is always good in a crisis.
I believe the secret to a strong relationship is ...
Compromise, always remembering why you fell in love in the first place and making time to listen to the other person.
Something I wish I'd done earlier ...
Learned to play a musical instrument. My dad played the accordion as does my sister. I had lessons when I was six, but we couldn't afford a child's accordion and I was too small to see over the top of the normal one. I got sent home and cried all the way.
My childhood hero was ...
My mum and dad were both wonderful. There are no other actors in my family, but my dad was a dramatic guy. He told great stories and had such a fantastic imagination. When I decided I wanted to do acting, they were both so supportive of me, and told me to follow my dreams.
The place I most like to call home ...
Wherever Kenny and Molly are.

Kate Dickie stars in Stronger, directed by Peter Mackie Burns, which has its world première in Glasgow tonight [25 October]. Tickets are free. For information, visit www.facebook.com/strongerfilm

Kate Dickie: 'Prometheus' DVD special feature

An exclusive clip of Ridley Scott terrorizing the hell out of the Prometheus crew

Watch Ridley Scott go old school and just scare the heck out of his actors in attempt to capture genuine fear on film. We've got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the director's efforts to shock actress Kate Dickie, who played Ford, the ship's doctor.
It's both diabolical and wonderful at the same time. Say what you will about the plot of Prometheus — the practical sets, creatures, and landscapes were astounding. And it's pretty great to see a big-time director going back the basic "scare the shit out of the actor and catch it on film" trick. No need for green screen, just shoot a giant Hammerpede out of a dummy's mouth. Magic!
The crafty Scott did the exact same thing while filming the infamous Alien chestburster scene. Scott kept most of the actors in the dark as they watched John Hurt's stomach explode with xenomorph. Oh, Ridley!
This clip comes from the special features on the Prometheus DVD, which debuts on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 9, 2012.

Ewen Bremner: Blackout, EIFF

BBC’s Blackout – quality drama to keep an eye on
What’s this? Quality drama coming out of the UK that doesn’t begin with the words Downton, Doctor or Sherlock? If the cast is any indication, absolutely. Starring Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, Lennon Naked, The Shadow Line), Dervla Kirwan (Injustice, The Silence), Ewen Bremner (Page Eight, Perfect Sense) and Andrew Scott (Sherlock, The Hour, Lennon Naked), the 3-part drama Blackout will première on BBC One beginning on 4 July 2012.

The series follows Daniel Demoys, played by Eccleston, a stranger in his own life. Over the years he has gone from being an idealistic young man with a burning desire to make the world a better place, to a disillusioned and corrupt council official. His alcoholism has driven a wedge between him and wife, Alex, played by Dervla Kirwan, and their three children. The fallout from his alcohol fuelled actions prove agonising for all around him.

When Daniel wakes up after another drunken night, he realises that he might be responsible for a murder. A dramatic act of redemption buys him public adoration, so much so that he has become a candidate in the race for Mayor, persuaded by council official Jerry Durrans, and lawyer sister Lucy. He is painfully aware that it could all come crashing down at any moment, especially with Detective Dalien Bevan, played by Andrew Scott, hot on his trail and determined to gain respect in the force.
