Ewan McGregor: interview

Celebrity Interview: Ewan McGregor
Scottish movie magnet Ewan McGregor recounts his vibrant two-decade career, and discusses a return to the role that made him famous
He's a Hollywood powerhouse and a lead in some of the biggest blockbusters in years including Moulin Rouge, Angels and Demons and as the fabled Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy. Ewan McGregor however, has Danny Boyle to thank for his global success after the Oscar-winning director cast him as the heroin addled Mark Renton in Irvine Welch's ode to a defining generation, Trainspotting. Put mildly, it propelled the young Scot into the stratosphere.

So with the long-awaited announcement that Boyle will go on to film the sequel, Porno, its understandable McGregor was one of the first to sign on to reprise his role. In fact, the entire original cast - including Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner, Kelly McDonald and Robert Carlyle - have all confirmed their participation in the movie. It seems they're all equally aware what a great debt they owe Boyle.

Announced shortly after this interview, McGregor spoke about his thoughts of a potential for a sequel. "I've always been waiting to read it and I never got sent it to read", he said. "I know in the past I always said I wouldn't do anything that would damage the reputation of the movie Trainspotting because I wouldn't want to do a poor sequel, but at the same time, I would always read it if I was sent it. I was never in the position where they've asked me to do it."

Danny Boyle considers bringing back Robert Carlyle for 'Trainspotting' sequel
British director Danny Boyle, writer of "Trainspotting", talks to Irish Independant about his 1996 hit and a possible sequel reuniting the original actors, according to a video segment, released today on the Irish newspaper's website.
As the interviewer discusses Danny's latest film release, "Trance", he mentions his other films, not the least of which is the '90s hit, "Trainspotting" a wild look at the gritty, violent heroin culture. Robert Carlyle portrayed psychotic Begbie, whose hair-trigger temper and misguided judgments for his friends' heroin addictions made for a memorable performance.

Robert Carlyle stars as Lachlan MacAldonich, once upon a time a Scottish rock musician, now a worker on an organic farm outside of Los Angeles. Busted for drunk driving, he faces deportation, an unpleasant possibility that forces him to confront his past. The 2012 independent film was written and directed by Marshall Lewy, who says he wrote it with "Trainspotting" star Carlyle specifically in mind. The film also serves as an avenue for his views on oppressive U.S. immigration laws. The 2012 film co-stars Danny Masterson and Alexia Rasmussen. It made the festival rounds last year, including the Cleveland International Film Festival. Unrated, 95 minutes. Extras: a deleted scene and behind-the-scenes footage. From Strand Releasing. Sir Jackie Stewart wants Ewan Mcgregor for racing movie
Hollywood bosses are eyeing a biopic of motor racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart - and the track ace wants Ewan Mcgregor to play him on-screen.

Brokeback Mountain producer Bill Pohlad is preparing to shoot the movie, which will focus on Sir Jackie's friendship with his Formula 1 protege Francois Cevert, who was killed in a track accident in the U.S. in 1973. Triple world champion Sir Jackie has read a draft of the untitled film's script and has given the greenlight for the project - and he's recommending Pohlad signs up fellow Scot MCGregor to play him in the movie.

The retired racer tells The Sun, "The relationship that Francois and I had was probably unique in that we were such good friends while, at the same time, racing against each other even though we were in the same team. This has been picked up by a very good film-maker in Bill. He has worked with some very big stars and he is a friend of mine. I've known him since about 1971. He wants to do it and we have agreed. "Clearly we won't be in it, it has to be actors. I don't know who will be playing me - but Ewan MCGregor would be an awfully good choice."

Ewan McGregor: 'Trainspotting' Sequel Not Happening
As amazing as it would be to see Begbie, Renton and Sick Boy continue their drug-induced Trainspotting adventures, Scottish leading man Ewan McGregor has unofficially nixed it -- he's never even seen a script for the hypothetical movie.

While doing press for the upcoming Salmon Fishing in the Yemen at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, McGregor addressed the possibility of starring in a sequel to the movie, which was based on the novel by Irvine Welsh.

"I was always a bit loathe to do it, because Trainspotting is so important for me," said McGregor. "And it was such an amazing film that still stands up today. I think making a sequel to it is almost a dangerous thing to do. You don't want to damage the reputation of the original film if you make a lesser version."

Upon reflection, McGregor briefly considered the semantics of creating the film now, over a decade after its original release in 1996.

"That said, it could be interesting because it's been so long, and the book is set 10 years later," he said, referring to Welsh's follow-up to Trainspotting, titled Porno. As for his aging since the mid-'90s?

"I still look very, very young, and that would be a big problem," he joked, laughing.

Another novel by Welsh ("Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance") has been adapted into a Canadian film, Ecstacy, which just wrapped shooting and is slated for release this year. Welsh is currently writing a prequel to Trainspotting, titled Skagboys.

Trainspotting 15th Year Anniversary Blu-Ray Release

Greys Gabble gives a McKidd-centric commentary on the Blu-ray release of Trainspotting, due out on 29 November

Trainspotting takes place in Scotland and follows Marc Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his gaggle of misfit friends; Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle), Tommy (Kevin McKidd) and Spud (Ewen Bremner). Each one of them is a far cry from what one would consider a respectable human being and nearly all of them, save for Begbie, is addicted to heroin.

Danny Boyle confirms the Trainspotting Sequel: Porno, is on the way

If you’re a big fan of Danny Boyle, then you’ll know that a Trainspotting sequel has been on the cards for a while. He’s certainly talked it up in interviews saying that he really wanted to do it. But now in another interview, he has confirmed that the film is going ahead, with the original cast and writer behind it.

The film will be based on the book Porno, written by Irvine Welsh as a sequel to Trainspotting. It is set ten years after the events of Trainspotting and focuses on the main characters Begbie, Renton, Spud and Sick Boy, only this time set against the porn industry as opposed to heroin addiction.

Boyle confirms that the original cast are on board and keen to get going. Robert Carlyle was quoted elsewhere saying he would do it “tomorrow for nothing” and even Ewan McGregor who was more skeptical, saying a sequel would be a “terrible shame”, is reportedly on for it.

Ewan McGregor fuels further speculation about "Trainspotting: The Sequel"

In an interview with Radio 5Live’s entertainment reporter Colin Paterson at last weekend’s Independent Spirit Awards, Ewan McGregor – who was standing three metres away from director Danny Boyle at the time – said “Come on, Danny. Where’s the script?”, before adding “I suppose [it’s possible] in the same way that anything’s a possibility.”
