Actor Tony Curran sneaks off film set to watch the Celtic game still wearing his alien costume
Actor Tony Curran sneaked out of filming his new sci-fi telly show to catch Celtic vs Barcelona - dressed in his full alien costume. The Doctor Who star was given a couple of hours off from filming Defiance to catch the game. But the die hard Celtic fan was warned by producers not to remove his make up or costume. And ex pats watching the game at McVeigh’s Tavern in Toronto were stunned when he walked in dressed as his character in the new show Datak Tarr.

The Celtic-mad actor was in the middle of shooting a new science fiction programme in the Canadian city, and had begged the producers for a few hours off to watch his team play Barcelona in the Champions League. But with a hectic shooting schedule, Tony was told he could only nip out if he agreed to keep his full make up on so he had to head to the pub dressed as alien gangster Datak Tarr from the new series Defiance.

Despite trying to hide his ghostly white face with a bunnet and scarf, he spent the whole night explaining to the members of the Downtown ...

Defiance Review: New Sci-fi Drama Premieres Monday
From Cinema Blend:
We've had a long time to anticipate the arrival of Syfy's new drama series Defiance, and in that time, many of us have likely set our expectations high for what will hopefully be a new must-watch original sci-fi drama for the cable channel. The series premiere does not disappoint, bringing us into a story about human and alien characters who are trying to co-exist in a city that was once St. Louis and is now known as Defiance. Developed by Rockne S. O'Bannon, Kevin Murphy and Michael Taylor, Defiance's tone blends western with sci-fi and tells the story of humans and aliens as they attempt to co-exist with one another on what's left of Earth.

The history of the setting is explained throughout the premiere. Aliens showed up decades ago thinking earth was uninhabited, they were wrong, war broke out and after earth was torn apart by the battles and drastically changed by alien technology, humans and Votans (the collective term for the various alien species) eventually laid down their arms and have attempted to share what's left of the planet. There's a bit more to it than that, and we begin to learn the details as the first episode gets going.

'Defiance' Review: New Syfy Drama Comes Out With Guns BlazingFrom Huffington Post:
"Defiance" (9 p.m. ET Monday, Syfy) is not just a smart, well-crafted TV show with a good cast and an adventurous flavor, it's also indisputably science fiction, which is a relief.

Defiance: TV Review
by Hollywood Reporter

Meet the Aliens of Defiance
We love horror, which pretty much translates into loving aliens since they are often scary (exceptions include E.T., Stitch, Gleek the Monkey and that alien from Mac and Me that loved Sears). A new alien epic is coming via Syfy's Defiance (Airing Mondays at 9/8c on Syfy), where sheer terror is substituted with pure sci-fi, but that doesn't make these aliens any less tough. In the show, life on Earth is cataclysmically changed by the arrival of the Votanis Collective, a conglomeration of alien races fleeing the destruction of their world. After your standard issue alien war apocalypse, we're left with a world in which humans exist alongside a rash of extraterrestrial races.
Castithans: Of all the Votan races, Castithans are closest to humans. They are characterized physically by their white skin and hair, and culturally by their adherence to a strict caste system.
Irathient: Irathients are a proud, tribal and spiritual race possessed of excellent combat skills. They have broad and flat nasal bridges, reddish skin, and large eyes. They are sometimes seen as feral due to their love of nature and their aggression.
Indogenes: Indogene have bright, white skin laid with hexagonal patterns, and no hair. An intellectual race, they value science above all and upgrade themselves with cybernetic implants.
Gulanee: Gulanee are rarely seen, and are beings of pure energy.
Sensoth: Somewhat simian in appearance, Sensoth tend to be on the larger side, and are the longest-lived of the Votan races. Their size and strength makes them well-suited for use as muscle and manual labor.
Liberata: Short in stature and generally fairly hairy, the Liberata are a servant class with a lower social standing than the other races.
Volge: A frightening, war-like race, the Volge make use of Cold Fire weaponry and pose a threat to both Votans and humans, alike.

'Defiance': Everything You Need To Know
Huffington Post's very comprehensive guide to everything Defiance is here.

'Defiance': Syfy Attempts To Blend TV Series, Video Game
Earth is recovering from an apocalyptic event, alien races cooperate warily, a wise-cracking outsider suddenly finds himself shouldering new responsibilities.

Yes, the world of "Defiance" features familiar sci-fi touchstones, but it's taken an ambitious approach to how you can experience them: Through both a weekly TV series and an online-only video game.

Five years in the making, the joint project is the most high-profile and big-budget attempt at ongoing "transmedia" entertainment, promising characters and storylines that crisscross between the Syfy network show and Trion Worlds game.

Set in 2046 on a "terraformed" Earth where humans live alongside seven alien species, the series premiering Monday displays a space Western vibe with bar brawls, interspecies politics and love, plus actors familiar to genre fans like Julie Benz and Jaime Murray. The already-released game, a multiplayer third-person shooter, has plenty of guns to upgrade, quests for supplies, and boss battles in which players cooperate to bring down giant monsters.

Though they can be experienced separately, somebody who both plays the game and watches the show will gain an extra layer of insight to each, promises actor Grant Bowler, who appears in both. Bowler said he was impressed and a bit wary of that idea when he signed on to play lead Joshua "Jeb" Nolan, who becomes "lawkeeper" of the city of St. Louis, renamed Defiance by survivors.

Miniseries Review: Labryinth (2012)
Whether or not you believe in a religion, let alone the grail stories, this two part story will hold you spellbound.

Based on the book by Kate Mosse (who has a small cameo and acts as consultant), the story switches between the town of Carcassone in 1209, when the crusaders have arrived, and present day, 2012.

Jessica Brown Findlay, is at the centre in the 13th century story as Alais Pelletier, who let into the grail secret by her father, and is in even more danger as a result. The lord of the town, Viscount Trencavel, portrayed by an almost unrecogniseable Tom Felton, is a close ally to the family.

In present time, Alice Tanner, portrayed by Vanessa Kirby, is a PhD graduate working on an archeological dig. All hell breaks loose when she wanders into a nearby cave and finds a ring and a skeleton.

John Hurt and Tony Curran have a small role each in the present and past parts, respectively. Both are excellent as always.

This is a really well made production, the switching between past and present is seamless, which helps keep the story coherent.

Sir Peter Jackson releases video of Hobbit studio (includes Billy Connolly)

Sir Peter Jackson has released the latest in a series of Hobbit behind the scenes video blogs.

In this, the seventh video of its kind, Sir Peter kicks off a tour around the Stone Street Studio based in Miramar.

"It used to be a paint factory, we got hold of it just before Lord of the Rings," Sir Peter explains.

He then hands the tour over and the cameras are taken swiftly through the production office where actor Billy Connolly, who portrays Dain, is hanging out.

From there the blog follows the trail of some urgent script revisions that need to go out, which are hand-delivered in this case to the trailer of James Nesbitt aka Bofur.

"I've decorated my trailer with things that remind me of home," says Nesbitt, pointing to flags and pictures of the Irish seaside adorning the campervan.

The video then takes a tour with Luke Evans, or Bard.

Evans takes a walk through the trailers the actors have been living in for the last seven-and-a-half years, knocking on doors to get the other actors to come out in various stages of costume.

It then follows actor Peter Hambleton to the prosthetics lab, where he is radically transformed into the epically bearded Gloin.

After that the cameras go for a stroll through the assistant-director's Portacom and the stunts department where an all-out brawl ensues, then it's off to the Hair and Make Up Department and the Costume Department.

Sir Peter pops back up again to show stages A and B, as well as the studio's biggest soundstage, K.

"K being named after King Kong," said Jackson.

The K studio has recently housed monumental set-pieces including Milk Wood Forest.

Fans also get a peek at F and G stages, which were built specifically for The Hobbit, and are housing some fiery scenes at the time of the blog shooting.

Following that, the video heads to the art department, most of which is fuzzed out for secrecy, but the team show off some of the intricate models put together for Sir Peter.

There are also some shots of the onset action, a look at the tremendous green screen, and a peek in the weapons shed.

The video then heads over to Sir Richard Taylor's Weta Workshop were the team are insanely busy making all the props needed for the film, including prosthetics for a team of "scale doubles", a set of dwarves who double for the lead actors.

The video then wraps with tiny Bilbo double Kiran Shah, revealing the surprising "behind the scenes team" filming the blog.

Sir Peter says the team will put out another blog shortly after shooting has wrapped in a few weeks time.

One-man Macbeth: Behind the scenes at ‘The Scottish Play’

Alan Cumming’s one-man Macbeth is the year’s most talked-about piece of theatre. Susan Mansfield goes behind the scenes to find out how it’s done.

It’s all in a twist of the body, a shift in the tone of voice, the smallest of facial inflexions, but it’s enough. One moment, Alan Cumming is Macbeth, the next he is Lady Macbeth. Moving fluidly from one character to the other, he acts out the charged, sexy encounter which begins with Macbeth resolving not to kill Duncan, his king and house guest, and ends with murder.

“Fan. Tas. Tic!” enthuses John Tiffany, who is co-directing the National Theatre of Scotland production with New Yorker Andy Goldberg, the man behind smash hit The Bomb-itty of Errors and Boney M musical Daddy Cool. A taller, quieter figure, he remains seated, but lifts a big hand in a thumbs-up. Then it’s back to the detail: “If you arch your back just a little more when you’re here,” says Tiffany. “Like a cat. Yeah…”

Cumming says later that this is the pivotal scene of the play. “Although this is a play about kings and queens and violence and battles and deaths, actually it’s about a decision being made, and how that affects everyone else’s lives. It’s really about that moment when you look into someone’s eyes and they look at you and you think, ‘OK, we’re gonna do it’. That split second, and everything reels out from that moment.”

Cumming’s one-man Macbeth has quickly become the year’s most talked-about piece of theatre. Speculation about it extends from the red carpets of New York and Hollywood to the taxi drivers of Glasgow. Cumming’s impish, blood-streaked face has been freaking out travellers on the Glasgow subway for the last month. Everyone wants to know how you can do Macbeth with a single actor. Now, having seen Cumming in action, I begin to see how you can.

Brave: extended behind-the-scenes featurette

Extended Behind-The-Scenes Featurette For Pixar’s ‘Brave’
With the film's release date fast approaching, Disney•Pixar has set loose this new featurette for their upcoming fantasy-adventure flick ‘Brave,’ providing us with a behind-the-scenes look at the film's story, characters, and cast.

‘Brave’ is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Merida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida (Kelly Macdonald) one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Merida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman (Walters) and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Merida’s quest – and serving as comic relief – are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).

Look out for Disney•Pixar’s ’Brave’ this summer from June 22nd in the US and August 17th in the UK.

Brave fears Scots accents
Published on Saturday 9 June 2012 13:38
Makes of animated blockbuster Brave have hired actors to dub the film overseas because they fear the Scottish accents will be difficult to understand.

The Disney Pixar film, which will premiere in Edinburgh, is to be voiced by natives in countries such as Japan, Taiwan and France to avoid confusion.

That means Scottish cast members Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Robbie Coltrane, Craig Ferguson and Kevin McKidd will not be heard in non-English speaking countries.

Brave is set to provide a multi-million pound tourism boost for the country.

Defiance: sneak peek at the new Syfy TV show and game

From SFX.co.uk:
Filming has just commenced on Syfy’s Defiance, the TV element in a multimedia project that also involves a massively multiplayer online game. That doesn’t just mean there’s a game of the show; the story in the show and the game will, apparently, weave together.

The story in the TV show follows the survivors of an alien invasion in one small frontier town, while the game will be set across the country but in the same, connected world.

Gotta admit, at the start of the video we were worried that it looked like a US version of Outcasts. Then they reveal the FX shots… which are pretty awesome. And the game footage has big FO monsters… hopefully they’ll be in the show as well.

Good cast too: Grant Bowler (True Blood), Julie Benz (Buffy, Angel), Jaime Murray (Hustle, Warehouse 13), Tony Curran (Vincent Van Gogh in Doctor Who), Stephanie Leonidas (Mirrormask, BBC’s Dracula), Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves), Mia Kirshner (24) and Fionnula Flanagan (Lost).

Here’s the official description:

“Defiance introduces players and viewers to a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the disparate survivors of a universal war who endeavor to build a new society among the devastation. The game combines the intense action of a AAA console shooter, with the persistence, scale, and customization of an MMO, while its TV counterpart weaves the rich tapestry of the world into a series with the scope, characters, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic. Because they exist in a single universe, the show and the game will influence each other and evolve together over time, with actions in both mediums driving the overall story of Defiance.”
