Gerard Butler also at the Empire Awards

I searched to see if Gerard Butler and James McAvoy took any photos together like James and Ewan McGregor did last year, but alas, no luck yet. Gerard appeared onstage with Guy Ritchie and his RocknRolla cast mates to accept the Jameson Empire Award (from James McAvoy's lovely wife, Anne-Marie Duff) for Best British Film. You can watch the video of the acceptance speech at Empire's website. Below are the transcript of the acceptance speech and photos of Gerry at the award show:

The Acceptance Speech
Guy Ritchie: "Thank you very much indeed. There's not much more I'll say because Gerry Butler is the eloquent one among us, so Gerry, perhaps you'd like to say a couple of words but just before you do, the Warner Bros team, thank you very much for doing the job that you all did. Empire readers, thank you very much indeed, Empire thank you very much indeed. Gerry Butler, you're on."

Butler: "This was supposed to be Guy speaking but as usual he dumped it on me. Listen, I want to thank Guy who really wrote all the words and directed all the stuff and did a great job and it's about time he got SOMETHING right... you did put me up here you bastard!"

Ritchie: (chases Butler away from the mike)"That's quite enough out of you Gerry."

Mark Strong: "It's over Ger, that's it, your time's up. It's great that people who know about movies and love movies decided to vote this Best British Film; thank you very much."

The year in review

There have been quite a few articles listing movies with Scottish actors for year end lists. Here are some of the picks of the year's most memorable movies:

The Brother's Bloom - starring Robbie Coltrane
Almost top 10 movies of 2008

Following a lukewarm reception at the Toronto Film Festival, Summit moved this one to a May opening date. Two things occur to me regarding this. First, screw the reaction out of Toronto. This isn't a festival film, precious and dignified. Far from it. Rian Johnson's second film is a rowdy road comedy, a brotherly buddy movie, and a sweet daffy love story all disguised as a con man movie. In reality, the cons are the least important part of the film, a mere excuse to pinball all these characters off one another. Ever since "The Sting," this genre has been an excuse to build a mousetrap and set it off, which can certainly be fun. But "The Brothers Bloom" isn't trying to con you at all. It's heartfelt and earnest, and if Summit thinks they can stand one more date change, can I urge you to consider Valentine's Day? Really sell the shit out of the interplay between Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz, who does some of the loosest, warmest work of her career here. Everyone looks like they're having a blast, but I particularly fell for Rinko Kikuchi as Bang Bang, a very quiet little eccentric who packs a big punch, sort of like Harpo Marx if he were a really cute Asian chick. I love the look of the film, the sort of cartoon ballet that Johnson pulls off with it. It's very sweet, and I think this could turn into a "Princess Bride," a film that people grow very passionate about with time.

The Escapist - starring Brian Cox
The 50 films that defined 2008

File under 'Tragically Overlooked'. Brit helmer Rupert Wyatt's prison-breakout debut features one of Brian Cox's finest performances.
Defining Moment
The escapees discovering a Stygian underworld stretching out before them.

RocknRolla - starring Gerard Butler
Best Ensemble Casts of 2008

I'll be in the minority with RocknRolla on any list -- but if there's one thing Guy Ritchie can do, it's ensemble casts. It's a shame RocknRolla played second fiddle to Madonna and Ritchie divorcing, because I thought there were some fine performances in it, particularly from Tom Wilkinson, and The Wild Bunch of Idris Elba, Gerard Butler, and Tom Hardy.
The 50 films that defined 2008
Guy Ritchie's return to form: a cocky, confident, occasionally perplexing but always kinetic crime caper.
Defining Moment
Gerard Butler being chased by unstoppable Russian Mafiosi.

Summer - starring Robert Carlyle
Films that showed us the world

Ken Loach - Director
The film I really enjoyed was Kenny Glenaan's Summer, starring Robert Carlyle and Steve Evets. It's a story set in the East Midlands, about two childhood friends in their forties who are mutually dependent on each other. They are both on benefits and one is ill and dying. It is full of humanity and humour. It is very simply done and compassionate. You get drawn into the characters as the intricacies of their relationship are gradually revealed. You see the bright hopes they had as children and what happens to them later in life.

Wanted - starring James McAvoy
The 50 films that defined 2008

Comic-book action from Night Watch director Timur Bekmambetov. James McAvoy turns macho and Ms. Jolie proves she's a true movie star.
Defining Moment
McAvoy curves a bullet around Jolie's self-assured form.

Weekend box office for RocknRolla

RocknRolla starring Gerard Butler opened outside of the top ten films at the US box office with $1.7million in 826 theaters. Considering the lack of promotion I'm pretty amazed it even made $1million. Has anyone gotten the chance to see it yet?

Gerard Butler's good news and bad news

Bad news first: Gerard's upcoming film Law Abiding Citizen just lost it's director Frank Darabont. Considering that he directed The Shawshank Redemption, I'd say the film lost a damn fine director. According to Ain't it Cool News the relationship between the film and its director “ended ugly” and Darabont quit, but no further details have been forthcoming.

Elizabeth Rappe from MTV goes on to speculate:

Could the shifting storylines be part of the problem? When the film was first announced, as part of Gerard Butler’s Evil Twins production shingle, Butler was starring as an assistant D.A. who found himself in the center of a traumatized victim’s vigilante plot. When Darabont’s name became attached, the vigilante had been replaced by a criminal mastermind, who was controlling the city from the confines of his cell. (A good fit for Darabont, who likes a good prison drama.) When Foxx signed on, the plot had shifted back to the vigilante storyline, with Foxx playing the vigilante hellbent for justice.

While this frees Darabont to work on something else, such as his Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk,” or his long-delayed “Fahrenheit 451,” it’s a disappointing blow to the film. This is Butler’s first producing gig, and it can’t feel very good to lose your director weeks before you were planning to start shooting. And where does it both leave Butler and Foxx, who may have passed on other roles for this? Who will take the director’s job, and how fast can they hire him or her? So many questions, so few answers.

Now for the good news: RocknRolla had the highest theater average in its limited American release with $6,053 or $42,372 at seven theaters. Since opening last Wednesday RocknRolla has earned over $101,300. If the film keeps making money, then hopefully Warner Bros. will take the hint and release it in more than 800 theaters in the US.

Who wants to see RocknRolla?

GBNet gives us this advice to get the movie in more theaters:

By now many of our visitors have read the article from the Los Angeles Times about RockNRolla and its limited North American release (3 cities on October 8 and 800 cities on October 31).

So, what to do? If you, your family members, your friends and everyone else you know want to see this “English film” in a theater near you, let’s start the campaign for that to happen now! With a cast that includes not only Gerry, but Idris Elba, Jeremy Piven, Chris Bridges (Ludacris), Tom Wilkinson and Thandie Newton, it would be a shame that more people would miss out on the chance to see this film on the big screen!

Consider voicing your support and we can send the message to Warner Bros. that this film deserves a wide release and a little marketing money! Let them know that we love “English films”! Use any or all of the links below!

>Comment on this post. No registration required. We will forward the post link to Warner Bros. so they can read your comments and feedback. Also register where you live in our RockNRolla state poll.

> Join our Facebook page and post us a message on our note about the film! Share it with your Facebook friends! (Registration required)

> Join the One Two RockNRolla MySpace and the Gerard Butler Dot Net MySpace pages. Comment, post links to them in your bulletins and blogs to spread the word about Guy Ritchie’s latest and how to show support for the film. (Registration required)

>Add your comment on Patrick Goldstein's blog at the Los Angeles Times. Always remember, calm, articulate and informed comments work best to get your message across. (Registration not required)

I've realised that there are a lot of Gerard fans outside of the US like me who would really like to see RocknRolla as well. Usually when a film is released in a lot of theaters in the US then it has a much greater chance of being released, or being released sooner in other countries so everyone get involved if you want to see the film.

No wide release for RocknRolla?

You know, I just knew I shouldn't have gotten overexcited about RocknRolla but I did anyway. How could I resist Guy Ritchie's "comeback" and Gerard Butler? Here's how the LA Times chose to depress me:

Guy Ritchie's upcoming gangster film, RocknRolla, is due to be released by Warner Bros. in early October. So why was the film's producer, the inimitable Joel Silver, showing the film to executives at Lionsgate and Sony Pictures?
According to my colleague John Horn, Silver said he was screening it for other studios to get their advice about marketing and release plans for the picture. You can imagine how tickled Warners' marketing staff must've been, hearing the news that the studio's top producer was out soliciting ideas about how to sell his picture from rival studios.

What's going on here? I went to Warners chief Alan Horn for some answers:

RocknRolla was financed by Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment, which has delivered a series of low-budget horror films to Warners, including The Reaping and House of Wax. Silver's deal entitles his films to a 800-screen wide release, but Warners ultimately decides how much of a marketing spend it's willing to risk on the film. In the past, when Warners had concerns about a film's commercial prospects, it has tried a limited three-city release, supported with TV advertising, to gauge a film's reception in the marketplace. The results are rarely encouraging, which Silver knows all too well; Warners did a similar release in 2005 with the Shane Black-directed Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, a Silver-produced comedy thriller that got good reviews but never won a broader national release. It's no wonder a savvy producer like Silver would be approaching a studio like Lionsgate, which makes its living releasing edgy films like RocknRolla.

Horn was honest about his assessment of the film. "I think it's a well-made picture, but while it's funny in spots, it's very English," he said. "I don't think it's broadly commercial. It feels like a film that deserves a spirited release, but not a wide one. Joel has an 800-screen deal, which we'll honor, but we might not be willing to spend the marketing money he wants us to."

Horn shrugged. "I guess I'm in a shocking state of equanimity," he said. "The filmmakers have every right to do what they think is best in support of their movies. But we have the right to do what's best for Warner Bros. Sometimes the pursuit of those interests results in a disagreement. For now, we're preparing to release the film in October, but I don't see it starting out on 800 screens. If Joel is thinking there is someone out there willing to spend twice as much money as we're willing to, I'm sure he will pursue that."

I really hope Warner Brothers at least considers the mass appeal Gerard Butler has - they must have at least noticed the fan reaction to him at Comic-Con last month.

Comic-Con highlights

The RocknRolla panel started with the film's US trailer which you can watch below:

ROCKNROLLA

I also found an article from Spout Blog about the RocknRolla panel that took place on Thursday:

Gerard Butler and Guy Ritchie from RocknRolla, "Korean music sensation" Rain from Ninja Assassin, and producer Joel Silver present Dark Castle's theatrical and direct-to-DVD slate.

The suddenly massive contingent of preteen female Comic-Con attendees swooned at the sight of Korean pop star/Ninja Assassin star Rain, and 300/RocknRolla hunk Gerard Butler, at Joel Silver’s Dark Castle Entertainment presentation. Jeremy Piven threatened to take his shirt off. Crickets.

Highlights:

–Dark Castle is investing in a bunch of direct-to-DVD sequels of moderate horror hits; judging by the reaction to The Hills Run Red, no one cares.
–”Korean music video sensation” Rain is a legitimate sensation. At least with the girls who were just still a little turned on from Twilight. Boys hold their hardons for “Gerry” Butler.

–Asking Joel Silver, Jeremy Piven and/or Guy Ritchie for words of encouragement is just about the biggest faux pas you can make as an attendee in Hall H.

–Joel Silver reveals the ten-words-or-less pitch that landed financing for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie.
–Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s relationship was solid enough during filming of RocknRolla that she was tasked with shooting syringes into Gerard Butler’s ass.

Full live blog transcript after the jump.

6:39 - Q: Gerard, what’s your favorite memory from being on set?

A: “Well, nothing more than getting a shot of B12 from his [Guy Ritchie's] wife Madonna. She was basically like the nurse, she came in and was all ‘drop your pants!’ and she stuck me in the ass.”

6:38 - Q: “Gerard, did you get to improv much on the movie?”

A: (from Guy Ritchie) “Nope! I wouldn’t allow it!”

The other panelists are begging Gerry to take his shirt off… it’s like an Elvis concert down there in the front

6:37 - Q: “For Gerard Butler, you’ve done a lot of different roles, what are you looking to get into next?”

A: Halle Berry.

6:33 - Ludacris is talking. Zzz.

6:31 - “Rocknrolla is better than sex!” — Gerard Butler

6:30 - Piven is overwhelmed by everyone’s dedication, “I celebrate every one of you! I’m in a service position, and I salute every one of you.”

Someone nearby “Did he just offer to service the audience?!”

Piven is out of chocolate and promises to take his shirt off. Yikes.

6:29 - Someone asks Guy Ritchie about the Sherlock Holmes movie, which is in preproduction now. “Is it happening?” “Yes!” It has a contemporary spin on it, and of course Robert Downey Jr. in it.

Joel Silver: “It’s like James Bond in 1891!”

6:27 - “How do you prepare for these roles?”

“Well, I get out of bed, I take a shower (sometimes), and I just go to work. You know, I sort of feel weird talking about this, because when I hear other people talking about their method, I sort of just say ‘Oh, shut up.” You just do it. Man, I sound like an American saying that. I’ve done it now.”

6:26 - Wow, someone mentioned Phantom of the Opera, and the girl groupies go nuts yet again.

6:25 - Butler wants to know, “DId you like the trailer we showed? Well make some fuckin’ noise then!” Next question: “How do you think people will react to this film? You have such a varied cast.”

Butler: “Well, we have a cool group of guys and girls. You lick your lips for this and sit back and go ‘Yeah!’ It defines cool.”

Pause. “Well, the licking the lips thing was a little homosexual. But you get my point.”

6:24 - Piven is talking about how he saw Lock Stock “with his good buddy Peter Berg” (cue the namedrop) and that his ‘77 Bronco broke down on the way from seeing it. Rough roots, rough toots. Piven wanted his role to be different than the character he plays in Entourage. It turned out to be easy because Ritchie had never even seen Entourage.
6:23 - People don’t really know this, but the Comic-Con panelists get little chocolates on their table, and Butler has started tossing them out to the girl groupies. They are going nuts for it.

6:22 - Butler is talking about how much he wanted to work with Guy Ritchie after seeing Lock Stock and Snatch… oddly enough he doesn’t mention Swept Away.

6:20 - Holy trainwreck, Batman. A woman who is clearly on in years is making her “own movie” and she talks about casting and executive producing and writing and directing, and she dramatically says “For the love of god, please tell me that filmmaking gets easier as you you get more experience!” Everyone on stage is bewildered.

Literally. And then everyone passes on answering the question.

FInally Joel Silver leans over and says “No, it never gets easier.”

6:19 - “TAKE IT OFF” one girl screams. “You’re funny,” he says.

6:17 - Here come the onslaught of questions for “Gerry.” “Thank you SO much for being here. I get the feeling that you really enjoyed making movies like this. Do you keep planning on making good storytelling movies?” I mean, honestly, you drive all this way, get up there, and ask that? Butler namedrops 300, and people go nuts.

Next up: “All of your roles have been physical, do you like those kinds of roles? Was this movie like that?”

“Not at all, this wasn’t nearly as physical as 300. It was easy, and I looked forward to going to work every day. I got sick making this movie, that was challenging.” In response to that, a gaggle of his girlfans down front swoon and go “Awwwwwwwww.”

6:16 - Guy Ritchie calls this a “Spillover from Lock Stock and Snatch.” It’s a “look into the underbelly of the subculture” in London

6:15 - They trot out Susan Downey, Ludacris (I can’t call him Chris Bridges), Jeremy Piven, “Gerry” Butler, and Guy Ritchie. Joel Silver jokes that “No one knows who Susan Downey is… she runs my company so I had this card made for her.” He whips out a namecard that says “Mrs. Tony Stark” on it.. Does this mean they’re having sex? Ew, Mr. Silver.

6:13 - It looks like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Part 2. But Chris “Ludacris” Bridges actually looks fairly decent in this. Color me shocked.

6:12 - What keeps throwing me is Jeremy Piven in this thing, and I couldn’t stand him in Smokin’ Aces. Do we really need him in another movie

6:11 - RocknRolla trailer rolls. “What’s a Rocknrolla? We want it all.” It’s The New School vs. The Wild Bunch, Gerard Butler is part of The Wild Bunch.

6:10 - Now it’s RocknRolla time.

6:08 - Last question is surprisingly for Naomi, and someone wanted to know if she’d like to play the character of Selena again. “I’d LOVE to” she says. Apparently she and Cillian Murphy were supposed to be in 28 Weeks Later, but obviously they weren’t. “I’m waiting on the third movie so I can play her again!

6:04 - Zzzzzzz. Everyone around me is falling asleep (the Rain gaggle is all up front) while waiting on Gerard Butler.
