Happy birthday Sean Connery

Sir Sean Connery turns 80 today. The Guardian has a retrospective on his life and career for his birthday.

David Tennant in TV magazines + David Tennant and Craig Ferguson's early TV appearances

David Tennant is featured in a couple of magazines to promote his upcoming BBC drama Single Father. The four part show is set to air in October in the UK, though dates have not yet been confirmed. Tennant News Updates has scans from TV & Satellite Week magazine and this week's Radio Times.

In other news David Tennant and Craig Ferguson are among the actors who are part of Scottish broadcast company, STV's new YouTube channel. STV has made hours of old shows available, including David Tennant's first TV role in 1988's Dramarama and Craig Ferguson on STV's 1993 series The Dirt Detective. The content is all free, but unfortunately it's only available to UK residents. Luckily, folks outside the UK can watch David's appearance in Dramarama over at Blogtor Who.

Updates on 'X-Men: First Class'

Producer Bryan Singer talked to Harry Knowles over at Ain't It Cool News and gave a few updates on James McAvoy's role in X-Men: First Class. He also confirmed a few things about production, namely that the first look at costumes and production design will be unveiled in "about a month" and he also re-confirmed the August 31 shooting start date in the UK.

...the film takes place in the 1960's. John F Kennedy is the President of the
United States. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are on TV doing marches. There
is a spirit of a hopeful future that was prevalent in that time. We will see how
Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr met - and how they dreamt of a future with Mutant
& Human kind. They're going to be in their late twenties. Xavier -
as played by James McAvoy will not be in his wheelchair to begin the film - but
we will see how he wound up in a wheelchair. I asked if McAvoy would have a nice
shiny chrome dome - and folks. We're going to see Professor X when he still had
hair. We'll see McAvoy and Fassbender's Magneto formulate what it is they are
attempting by creating the X-MEN.

Now Bryan wanted us to know
this is not the conventional FIRST CLASS comic - but rather a new beginning for
X-MEN. Set in the 60s - Vaughn is technologically inspired by JAMES BOND's tech
of the time. The costumes will be far more comic bookish than we've seen
before...

...Looks like filming will begin with Xavier at Oxford
University in the 60s. And Bryan is excited that the film is going to have a
much more international feel than the prior X-MEN movies. [Harry Knowles]

More photos of Ewan McGregor in 'Beginners'

The first photo from Beginners was unveiled last week, and now two more photos have surfaced. The film's world premiere will be at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. An official description of Beginners is below:

Five years after Thumbsucker, director Mike Mills returns to the Festival with
another winning indie dramedy that balances humour, sorrow and romance with
aplomb.
Beginners deftly juggles two chronologies to tell the heartwarming
story of two major points in the life of Oliver (Ewan McGregor), a talented
illustrator.

One timeline follows the slow-burning deterioration of
Oliver’s father (Christopher Plummer), who is dying of cancer. But his impending
death is not the only news that has caught Oliver off guard; his divorced
father, at the age of seventy-five, has also come out of the closet. Just like
that, he gets a new wardrobe, a new boyfriend and an entirely new outlook on
life.

Following his father’s death, a bereaved Oliver becomes somewhat
of a shut-in. As Beginners takes us through his personal journey, the film
flashes forward, intercutting a budding relationship between Oliver and a young
French actress (Inglourious Basterd’s Mélanie Laurent) whom he meets at a
costume party that he attends under duress. The twin narratives gradually reveal
subtle associations about how Oliver reacts to both these unpredictable
relationships, and how his father and girlfriend motivate him to surpass his
self-prescribed limitations.

McGregor and Laurent have natural onscreen
chemistry, and Plummer is outstanding in his rich portrayal of a dying man who
is finally able to live honestly, breaking out of his shell so near the end of
his life. The ensemble cast lends the film a warm, understated aura that never
feels the least bit contrived.

Mills is at the top of his game in
crafting dynamic mood pieces that steer clear of the usual trappings found in
American independent cinema. The outcome is a thoroughly enjoyable character
study about people opening up and discovering themselves despite age,
preconceptions and illness. [Jane Schoettle]

Gerard Butler now set to star in 'Slide'?

Way back in October 2009, Gerard Butler hinted that his production company Evil Twins, was working on Slide. The movie had originally been about a father who returns to his estranged wife and child to work things out, and ends up coaching his child's baseball team. Now, the film has been retooled and will instead be about football instead of baseball. Gerard is also now in talks to star as the father, instead of solely producing the movie, with director Gabriele Muccino still part of the project.

James McAvoy campaigns for the UK Film Council

James McAvoy is among the more than 50 actors protesting plans to scrap the UK Film Council. An open letter was published on Thursday in The Daily Telegraph:

In a joint letter, they wrote that David Cameron's decision to axe the council as part of his savage costcutting drive threatened a "British success story".

They said the expertise of camera crews, lighting experts and set builders was the reason so many top Hollywood directors chose to make films here.

And they pointed out the industry made money for Britain, bringing in £5 for every £1 invested.

The letter said: "Everyone knows that times are tough. But the UKFC doesn't waste money, it makes it. Thanks to its efforts, our film industry, worth £4.5billion a year, has rarely been stronger."

The Government's plans have provoked outrage, with 42,000 people signing a Facebook petition.

Since the UKFC was established in 2000, British films have laid claim to 23% of box office takings.

It is responsible for some of the most successful UK hits including In the Loop, Bend it Like Beckham and Gosford Park. Last year it received £63.3million income from the Lottery and grant-in-aid.

Axing it would save just £3million a year. [Mirror.co.uk]

'Don Quixote' delayed; Ewan McGregor still attached

Back in May Ewan McGregor revealed that he was unsure about Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote ever getting off the ground. In an interview with MTV (via The Playlist) Gilliam explained that the film may be delayed because of some financial trouble:

MTV: So..."Don Quixote." Where are you at right now? I have my fingers crossed that you're still moving forward.

Terry Gilliam: We moved forward and then we stepped back a bit. Originally, I thought we were going to be in pre-production right now, but there's been a little hiccup. And me doing this thing with Arcade Fire is a result of this hiccup with "Don Quixote." Robert Duvall is still Quixote and Ewan McGregor is still involved — all that stuff is still happening. There's just been a financial hiccup.

...MTV: Is it really still going to happen?

Gilliam: I'll get back to it, but at the moment out there, if you're not spending a couple hundred million dollars in Hollywood, it's pretty rough. It's hard to predict anything. Everyone's having these problems. I'm not different from anybody else. [Eric Ditzain]

'Burlesque' gets a fall release date

It's a bit of a slow news day, but Screen Gems recently announced the release date for Burlesque which stars Alan Cumming. The film is set to open on November 24 in the US. No MPAA rating has been announced yet. A detailed synopsis is below:
Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship and an uncertain future to follow her dreams to LA. After stumbling upon The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic but ailing theater that is home to an inspired musical revue, Ali lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club’s proprietor and headliner. Burlesque’s outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day.

Soon enough, Ali builds a friendship with a featured dancer (Julianne Hough), finds an enemy in a troubled, jealous performer (Kristen Bell), and garners the affection of Jack (Cam Gigandet), a bartender and fellow musician. With the help of a sharp-witted stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and gender-bending host (Alan Cumming), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage. Her spectacular voice restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory, though not before a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) arrives with an enticing proposal…

James McAvoy attached to 'Cloud Atlas'; distribution deal set for 'Gnomeo and Juliet'?

Several weeks ago, Production Weekly announced that James McAvoy and several other actors had been offered roles in Tom Tykwer's adaptation of Cloud Atlas. According to The Playlist, Tykewer was recently in LA, meeting with potential cast members and James McAvoy is now officially attached to the film. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Natalie Portman are also officially attached, but Ian McKellen's involvement is still up in the air. Cloud Atlas doesn't have any financing or studio backing yet, so the project is still a long way from production. Based on David Mitchell's 2003 novel, Cloud Atlas focuses on six main characters and spans across thousands of years - from the 19th century to the distant future.

On the Gnomeo and Juliet front, the 3D animated film has just completed a UK and Canadian distribution deal with E1. It's schedule to open in February 2011 in the UK and Canada. Meanwhile, Disney will be distributing the film in America on February 11, 2011.
James McAvoy (Gnomeo), Emily Blunt (Juliet), Matt Lucas (Benny), Maggie Smith (Lady Blueberry), Michael Caine (Lord Redbrick), Stephen Merchant (Paris), Ashley Jensen (Nanette), Jason Statham (Tybalt) and Ozzy Osborne lend their voices to the comic make-over of Shakespeare’s tragedy set in the world of warring indoor and outdoor gnomes.
