MTV to screen Fright Night

Can’t wait to see upcoming flicks like Horrible Bosses, The Help, and 30 Minutes or Less? If you live in Los Angeles, you might not have to. MTV tells EW exclusively that from Monday, May 30 through Friday, June 3, it’s hosting screenings of five of summer’s hottest movies — including the three named above, Fright Night (starring David Tennant), and The Art of Getting By. Each screening will be followed by a 30-minute-long Q&A between MTV news correspondent Josh Horowitz and talent from the film; Emma Stone, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aziz Ansari, and cast members from Horrible Bosses are all scheduled to make appearances. Those interviews will all stream live at MTV.com as well.

But wait, there’s more! EW will also be the only news outlet present at the screenings, so be sure to check back at EW.com to see what scoop we manage to get from the stars in attendance. And even if you’re not one of the lucky few average Joes present at the screenings, you can still see exclusive clips from all five movies on MTV itself. The network will premiere one new clip each day from each movie. Here’s the schedule of the clips, as well as a list of the talent being interviewed:

David Tennant to appear in This Is Jinsy

David Tennant will be appearing as a guest in an episode of the new series of the Sky television programme This Is Jinsy. The pilot was originally made for BBC Three but declined to commission a series so Sky instead snapped it up.

This Is Jinsy
is described as:
“A surreal sitcom set on Jinsy, an island whose 762 residents are monitored by 1,067 tessellators. These tessellators include video cameras for surveillance as well as little screens to allow the residents to watch important island events, such as the tri-annual island cow wash (live from Glotters field). They also include a handy slot for paying fines, and a sphincter nozzle for product and pill downloads. Arbiter Maven (the 17th Arbiter and 'Wearer of the Hat') is assisted by Operative Sporall (nice hair and 'Wearer of the Beige Suit'). From the Great Tower in the parish of Veen, they observe video feeds from the tessellators and keep a watchful eye on the residents.”

The eight part series is directed by Matt Lipsey and will air on Sky's new channel Sky Atlantic HD in the summer. Chris Bran and Justin Chubb write and star in the series.

David Tennant has already recorded his one episode of the series which is listed in his CV for Much Ado About Nothing.

James McAvoy tipped to play Tommy Sheridan

The Scots actor is the first choice of author Denise Mina, whose forthcoming novel is based on the politician. James McAvoy has made a name for himself as an action hero in Wanted and X-Men First Class, but it’s his roots in British drama Shameless that could see him playing disgraced politician Tommy Sheridan.

The actor is the first choice of author Denise Mina, who is in the middle of discussing film rights ahead of the release of her new novel based on the turbulent life of the Solidarity leader.

Speaking to STV’s Grant Lauchlan, McAvoy originally laughed at the thought before admitting that “quite possibly” it could work.

“Quite possibly, quite possibly,” he said. “You think to yourself: ‘Aw, I don’t think that would make a good movie’. I’ll be honest with you, that’s what I’m thinking right now. But, sometimes it’s the oddest things in life that make the best stories.

“So maybe it would be the best thing to come out of Britain in the last 20 years. Or maybe it would be rotten.”

'Young Hearts Run Free' + Director Q&A and Networking

Scottish Actors received an email this week from the producer of a new independent Scottish film. The content of the email is reproduced here:

The special screening events are more involving and have a Q&A so audiences can meet the team and ask anything they like about the award-winning performances, directing, production and innovative new distribution strategy and can learn how this film (which features 1970s period detail, scenes down a coal-mine and a full riot) was made for 'less than the price of a family car'.

Synopsis
'Young Hearts Run Free'
Friendship, First Loves, Rebellion!
1974; during a violent coal-miners strike in a quiet village a teenage artist falls in love with the gorgeous new girl but their attempts to escape cause him to betray his family, community and best friends. This award-winning coming of age story is an uplifting and soulful mix of cool 1970s styles, warm-hearted romance, teenage angst and gritty social realism.

Much Ado About Nothing - DVD Appeal

As many of you know, there’s an appeal going around to get Catherine Tate and David Tennant’s production of Much Ado About Nothing onto DVD for posterity but also because, quite frankly, many, many fans of both actors will never get a chance to see this amazing production.

The lovely folks at Illuminations, who were involved with Tennant’s Hamlet DVD, have informed me that the appeal for the Hamlet DVD grossed approximately 7,500 signatures which clearly made all the difference in the world and helped give us Hamlet on DVD.

I urge you to please sign the Much Ado appeal HERE, and reblog or pass on the url to other Catherine Tate and/or David Tennant fans. We are currently at 5,700ish signatures and it would be awesome if we could get at least the 7,500 or so that Hamlet got. Thanks!

UPDATE: According to @_ophelia, Hamlet received a total of 7,892. COME ON!

Update: as at 21.30 this evening (24 May 2011), the total number of signatures had reached 7496.

'Torchwood' series on DVD and 'Torchwood: Miracle Day' character photos & bios

TV Shows On DVD reveals that Torchwood - The Complete Original UK Series arrives on DVD and Blu in time for Miracle Day

Many fans of the BBC series are counting the upcoming Starz production of Torchwood: Miracle Day this summer as the "fourth series" (or season) of the popular show which was spun off from Doctor Who. There were two traditional-length series/seasons at 13 episodes each, followed by the five-episode "third series" titled Torchwood: Children of Earth. After that adventure, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) left Earth for a bit...which is why we saw him in an alien bar in a brief cameo for David Tennant's final episode of Doctor Who ("The End of Time, Part 2"). Jack is reuniting this summer with Gwen (Eve Myles) and others in the new 10-episode production, which also stars Mekhi Phifer (ER's "Dr. Gregory Pratt") as "Rex Matheson", a CIA agent who gets caught up in events beyond his previous experience.

To celebrate the new adventures, which premiere on the Starz cable channel this July 8th, the BBC has announced today that Torchwood - The Complete Original UK Series will be available on DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc this July 19th.

A highlight of the Scottish theatre calendar, the CATS celebrates the actors, directors, playwrights and other theatre artists who have made the most significant contributions of the year.

Previous winners include actors David Tennant and Cara Kelly, works including Blackbird and Black Watch and companies Wee Stories to the National Theatre of Scotland.

Blythe Duff, star of STV's Taggart, is up for Best Female Actor for her role as Helen in David Harrower's Good with People, produced as part of the A Play Pie and A Pint series at Oran Mor, Glasgow. Her portrayal of a frustrated hotel receptionist who embarks on a strange relationship with a younger man earned her rave reviews when it opened in September last year.

Other nominations for Best Female Actor include rising star Gemma McElhinney for her performance as Duck in David Greig's The Monster in the Hall, which was produced as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival.

David Birrell is up for Best Male Actor for his enigmatic performance as Sweeney Todd at the Dundee Rep, which received 5 star reviews virtually across the board, but he faces tough competition from Ian Smith, Peter Forbes and Alex Ferns.

Meanwhile, Dundee's Rep Theatre and The Traverse Theatre Company in Edinburgh have much to celebrate as they are in the running for five awards each, just behind the National Theatre of Scotland and Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum, who both appear in six categories.

The winners will be announced at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, on Sunday 12 June and tickets for the awards ceremony can be purchased now.

Aardman Animation’s ‘The Pirates, Band of Misfits’ casts David Tennant , Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman and more

Sony and Aardman Animation have teamed for a new 3D stop-motion animated film, called The Pirates! Band of Misfits, based in part on Gideon Defoe‘s book The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists. (Which is also the film’s title in the UK, I believe.) That isn’t news, but the first still, above, and the announcement of the full cast definitely is.
Aardman co-founder and Chicken Run co-director Peter Lord is directing the film, which is animated in the now-classic Aardman clay figure style, and he’s got Hugh Grant making his clay debut as the chap you see above.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits, in addition to Hugh Grant, will feature: Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen. That’s all via a press release, which also gives up this synopsis booty, complete with a rundown of who’s playing whom:

Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!

Billy Connolly producing segment on Route 66

Scottish comedian, musician and actor Billy Connolly and three cameramen were in Pontiac on Monday, taping a segment on Old Route 66 that Connolly is producing and hopes to sell to Independent Television Authority. ITA is a United Kingdom public service network.
