Happy birthday Robbie Coltrane!
Gerard Butler also at the Empire Awards
I searched to see if Gerard Butler and James McAvoy took any photos together like James and Ewan McGregor did last year, but alas, no luck yet. Gerard appeared onstage with Guy Ritchie and his RocknRolla cast mates to accept the Jameson Empire Award (from James McAvoy's lovely wife, Anne-Marie Duff) for Best British Film. You can watch the video of the acceptance speech at Empire's website. Below are the transcript of the acceptance speech and photos of Gerry at the award show:
The Acceptance Speech
Guy Ritchie: "Thank you very much indeed. There's not much more I'll say because Gerry Butler is the eloquent one among us, so Gerry, perhaps you'd like to say a couple of words but just before you do, the Warner Bros team, thank you very much for doing the job that you all did. Empire readers, thank you very much indeed, Empire thank you very much indeed. Gerry Butler, you're on."Butler: "This was supposed to be Guy speaking but as usual he dumped it on me. Listen, I want to thank Guy who really wrote all the words and directed all the stuff and did a great job and it's about time he got SOMETHING right... you did put me up here you bastard!"
Ritchie: (chases Butler away from the mike)"That's quite enough out of you Gerry."
Mark Strong: "It's over Ger, that's it, your time's up. It's great that people who know about movies and love movies decided to vote this Best British Film; thank you very much."

James McAvoy at the Empire Awards
The Acceptance Speech
"Oh my god, I got an award from the CAG! Er, not everyone's going to get that. I wasn't sure what to say but I was inspired by another winner tonight so I think I'll just say... (adopts deep, serious tones)'stop all the clocks...' No, seriously. Please. Bullshit is all I have, to take this award away. What a brilliant year for British directors and British actors and British stories. So it's when I chose to leave for the Czech Republic and make an American-funded film about superheroes. But I really did have a cracking time and I did learn to bend bullets, and on behalf of everybody... Timur: Mad, evil, Kazakhstanian director I'd like to say thank you. Cheers!"Photo Credit: Gareth Gay / Alpha

Gerard Butler is doing a nude scene
Yay! I got your attention. This is my shallow post for the year. Gerard shot nude scenes on a closed set in Pennsylvania last Friday for Law Abiding Citizen. The nudity is for a scene in which the police break into Gerard's character's house, so it isn't a love scene or anything. You can tell that today is a bit of a slow news day.

Even more bad news for 'I Love You Phillip Morris'
I Love You Phillip Morris starring Ewan McGregor is still trying to find a US distributor. Here's an excerpt from an article explaining why:
A prison comedy starring Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey as gay lovers may not be shown in American cinemas because it is considered too risqué.
I Love You Phillip Morris, in which the stars play inmates who find love behind bars, has failed to find a US distributor and is expected to go straight to DVD.
Film industry insiders said the movie, which features a graphic sex scene and frequent references to gay sex, had fallen foul of anti-gay prejudice in America.
The independent movie, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, has attracted mixed reviews, with one critic for Variety, the movie bible, remarking that the “clingy physicality of Steven and Phillip” and “spectacular, ride ’em-cowboy sex scene” would give some fans of Carrey’s mainstream movies a heart attack.
Lewis Tice, director of publicity and marketing, at distributors TLA Releasing, said he believed the graphic homosexual sex depicted in the film had turned off distributors.
“The depiction of the sexual activity was far more than I’ve ever seen in a mainstream film with a mainstream celebrity,” he said. “There’s a graphic sex scene in the first 10 minutes that I was surprised to see.”
Tice added: “Lesbian gay bisexual and transvestite cinema is still seen as an underground, specific genre. When it comes to Hollywood mainstream, they want the widest audience possible for the amount of money they spend.”
Scott Stiffler, author of Why Hollywood Avoids Gay Movies, added: “Mostly straight, multiplex-going audiences don’t want to see a romantic comedy in which two dudes get it on; unless it is meant as a joke.
The film is currently being re-edited in a last ditch attempt to find an American distributor. If it fails to do so, it will go straight to DVD.
Well, this is sort of depressing to be honest. I, for one will pay money to see two hot dudes (well Jim Carrey is okay), get it on. I honestly, don't think the distributors are giving audiences credit, but what do I know.

Alan Cumming's thoughts on Natasha Richardson
As you all know, Natasha Richardson passed away yesterday. Alan Cumming wrote a lovely little tribute to his Cabaret co-star on his blog, so I thought I'd post it:
I, like everyone, am totally devastated by the sudden death of Natasha Richardson. The term 'life force' seems trite but that is what she was: a woman who powered through life and fascinated everyone she encountered. I have been thinking about the times I spent with her since I heard the news of her tragic accident, and the strongest memory I have is of her laughter, her unmistakeable throaty laugh. I think that's a great way to remember someone.Source
She was a brilliant actress. I will never forget her Blanche Dubois. It was almost too much, too real and raw. Liam and the boys and her whole family have lost an amazing woman. We all have. Goodbye, darling.

New 'Law Abiding Citizen' article and photo
GerardButler.net points us to a new photo and article from the Philadelphia Inquirer. The article reveals director, F. Gary Grey's film making process, and has a profile of Gerard Butler's career and his experience making Law Abiding Citizen. Here's an excerpt from the article:
On Day 35 of the 48-day shoot, Gray and Butler, cheerleaders for Philadelphia, share their impressions of the movie, the city and its mayor.
"Mayor Nutter - nicest guy in Philly, a lovely, big soul who's supportive and welcoming, indicative of its citizens," says Butler, the strapping Scot who starred in 300 and Phantom of the Opera.

That guy on Twitter is not Ewan McGregor
SourceActor Ewan McGregor is threatening legal action over an Internet impostor pretending to be him on various social networking sites.
The online fraudster purporting to be McGregor has convinced nearly 20,000 fans to subscribe to his regular updates on Twitter.com.
The phony messages tell followers the alleged star is "about to enjoy banana pancakes" and "finally has some relaxing time".
But McGregor is adamant the messages aren't from him.
A spokesperson for the star says, "Ewan does not have a Twitter site or one on MySpace either. Someone is just making it all up. People monitor his movements. We are looking into taking action to have the Twitter site removed."

Radio Times cover update
More than 1.1m issues of the magazine were printed and distributed to six different TV regions across the UK.I don't think James McAvoy's cover will be released outside of Scotland, sadly.
Publisher BBC Magazines produced equal numbers of all 21, except for the David Tennant version, which appeared in London, Scotland and Wales.

Bad news for 'I Love You Phillip Morris'
We might not get to watch it in North America. It has only been a few weeks since it premiered to good reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, but I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Ewan McGregor still not been sold. The producer of the dark comedy says it has been taken off the market.
He added: "If it's a film that has somebody with marketing value, but it's a more difficult film, the price may not be large. Whoever's handling the sale of the film may take a while to come to terms with that."
The film was one of the most anticipated films of Sundance, but the complexity of the movie left distributors not knowing how the film could find an audience. Even those who loved the film were unsure of how to market it.
Producer Andrew Lazar says the film starring Ewan McGregor, is no longer on the market and the production company plans to announce a theatrical deal "very soon." However, during the festival, the filmmakers said they were going to continue editing the film -- turning its debut at Sundance into a work-in-progress screening -- so it remains unclear how the newer version will play.
I know how to market this and here's the premise: Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey make out in this movie. See distributors?

New Roman Polanski thriller The Ghost has started shooting on the German island of Sylt in the North Sea. The island is being used as a stand in for Martha's Vineyard, located on the Atlantic Ocean. Ewan McGregor, co-star Pierce Brosnan and the rest of the crew will be on location in Sylt until March 6, 2009.
I Love You Phillip Morris to open in the UK this summer
I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Ewan McGregor has finally gotten distributors in the UK. Only a few European countries like Italy, and the countries in Scandinavia have also gotten rights to show the film. America and Canada are waiting to get news about their distribution status, and sadly the wait is partially due to the state of the economy. Luckily, since the distribution has finally been confirmed for the UK, the US and Canada won't have much longer to wait to find out about release dates.
