Tony Curran: 'Defiance' character photos and interviews

Defiance: Exclusive New Images
Check out new characters pics from the Syfy series.
As we get closer to the April 15th debut of Defiance, IGN has the exclusive debut of new character photos from the Syfy series.

Defiance takes place in a future where the arrival of seven alien races has changed society forever. In the wake of a great war, an uneasy peace has been found and Defiance centers on life in a town where humans and aliens coexist.

Defiance is part of an ambitious plan to launch a TV series and game simultaneously, with the game taking place in the same continuity. The game is set in San Francisco and the TV series in what was once St. Louis, MO, though at least a couple of the TV show characters will be seen in the game.

Defiance Character Photos Show Us The Humans And Aliens In Syfy's New Series
Coming up in April, Syfy's Defiance will premiere, along with the video game which will interconnect the world between two mediums, for those TV viewers who also also manage to find time to do a bit of gaming. And for those of us who prefer one over the other, we hear the series and video game will work independently enough so that you aren't required to follow one in order to follow the other. That's thinking a bit ahead though. For now, what we really have to look forward to is a sci-fi series on Syfy.

The character photos released for the series make it very clear that we're dealing with science fiction here. The drama is set on earth where humans now live with seven other unique alien races. They're all trying to get along and reform society in the transformed landscape. As you can see in the cast photo below, St. Louis, Missouri is the backdrop for Defiance's story - or the new version St. Louis, now known as Defiance.

‘Defiance’ Cast Photos Introduce Viewers To An Exciting New Sci-Fi World
Even though we’re still two months away from the premiere, it is already apparent that Syfy’s upcoming multiplatform series Defiance is the cable channel’s most ambitious project in years. Syfy has released a collection of character photos that introduce us to the series’ sprawling cast while also giving us a glimpse of the impressive amount of detail that has gone into constructing the futuristic world inhabited by humans and aliens alike.

Set on Earth after it has been ravaged, terraformed and colonized by seven alien races collectively known as Votans, Defiance focuses on the town formerly known as St. Louis and its inhabitants. The series is part of a larger world that also comprises a MMO video game that will also debut April, but viewers won’t have to play the game in order to understand the series.

Defiance premieres Monday, April 15th at 9/8c on Syfy

DEFIANCE Cast Photos
In April of 2013, Syfy will present a revolution in storytelling: Defiance, an epic drama that will unfold as both an original series and a multi-platform video game. An unprecedented collaboration between Syfy and Trion Worlds, “Defiance” is the first-ever convergence of television and online gaming, featuring an interconnected world between the two mediums as they evolve together into one overall story.

The series’ luminous cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Mia Kirshner.

Set in the near future, “Defiance” introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. Each week, viewers will follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, MO, while in the game, players will experience the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area.

The series is executive produced by Kevin Murphy (“Desperate Housewives,” “Caprica,” “Hellcats”), who also serves as showrunner, Michael Taylor (“Battlestar Galactica”) and Rockne O’Bannon (“Farscape”). Scott Stewart (“Legion,” “Priest”) directed the pilot; Michael Nankin will serve as supervising producer/director on the series. “Defiance” is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

"During the war, the Votans drop 'terraformers' on the planet, transforming the surface, scorching the earth, opening chasms in the ground and covering the surface of the planet in dust and debris.
"After decades of war, a ceasefire is declared when both sides realize they must focus on survival on this new almost alien planet.
"Jeb Nolan' was only ten years old when the Votans arrived and he served in the military during the war. With the war now over, he returns to his hometown of St Louis to find it’s is no longer the city he left; it is little more than refugee camp.
