Kathleen McDermott: 'New Tricks' interview

Kathleen McDermott on the difference between snogging Ewan McGregor and his uncle Denis Lawson

The TV star plays Denis Lawson's girlfriend in New Tricks - and said she felt comfortable doing their passionate scenes.

TV star Kathleen McDermott admits that, when it comes to snogging, Ewan McGregor and his uncle Denis Lawson can’t be split.

The stunning redhead, who plays Lawson’s girlfriend in hit TV police drama New Tricks, had to pucker up to the Local Hero star in every scene.
Joker Kathleen, 35, from Glasgow, could not resist teasing Denis, 64, about his kissing prowess.

She said: “I had to snog Ewan McGregor when I was auditioning for Young Adam and, before I snogged Denis, I joked that he better be as good as his nephew – and he was.
“I can’t really remember much about my kiss with Ewan but, in our business, you have to snog so many people, it all fades into one.
“Luckily, Denis was a great laugh so I felt quite comfortable doing scenes with him, which is good as we had to get passionate a lot.”

Kathleen, who plays forensics expert Charley Scott in episode nine of the current series, hopes her character will become a regular.

The BBC show, which also stars Dennis Waterman and Amanda Redman, follows a team of retired police officers as they try to solve cold cases.

Kathleen, who won a Scottish Bafta for her role in Morvern Callar, said: “I loved working on the show. There is a great atmosphere and both the Dennii, as they are called, have a great sense of humour.

Denis Lawson plays ex-Detective Inspector Steve McAndrew and I play his girlfriend, who has a gritty past.
“I’m hoping they will want to include a lot more of Steve’s personal life in the next series so I can stay on in the show.”

Kathleen, who has also starred in Rab C Nesbitt, Wedding Belles and E4 zombie series Dead Set, was gobsmacked when she was offered the role.
She said: “I got an email from Philip John, who directed Wedding Belles and was directing some episodes of New Tricks.
“It said, ‘I’m coming to get you’. I had no idea what it meant until my agent called about an audition.”

The actress, who is married to electrician Martin Carberry, 29, and has two children Lana, three and Jackson, nine months, has kept out of the limelight for the past few years.
Kathleen, who’s been singing in Glasgow karaoke venue Shanghai Shuffle for the last 17 years, said: “I’ve been concentrating on my kids. My best role will always be as a mum.
“I’ve done a couple of short films since I had them but New Tricks is my first major part. I hope it’s the first of many. I’m so happy.”
