Dougray to bring classic hero to TV

Dougray Scott is being lined up to bring Victorian literary hero Allan Quatermain to the small screen.
The Scottish actor is favourite to take the lead in a new 10-part series based on Sir H Rider Haggard’s classic sequence of adventure novels.

African hunter Quatermain endeared himself to thousands of readers with adventures which included King Solomon’s Mines. Sir Sean Connery last played the character in 2003 in a £50million adaptation of graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

The new series is being produced by Scottish film and television boss Douglas Rae.

The ambitious new project was announced yesterday at MIPTV, the television market for buyers and sellers in Cannes. Rae, whose previous TV work includes Mistresses, Camelot and Monarch of the Glen, said: “Allan Quatermain is one of the greatest adventure heroes in all of literature.
“In the years since his introduction, he has subsequently inspired many hugely successful characters and franchises, including the Indiana Jones series.”
He added: “We are extremely excited about this opportunity as we introduce Quatermain to a new generation and bring his timeless exploits into the 21st century.”

The producers of the show, titled simply Quatermain, have Mission: Impossible 2 star Scott, 46, on their wish-list. The Glenrothes-born actor has enjoyed a string of recent TV successes including Sinbad, United, and Day of the Triffids.
