Billy Connolly to star in Hoffman-directed 'Quartet'

With many top actors also directing films, from George Clooney to Clint Eastwood, Dustin Hoffman has remained on the other side of the camera - until now, with the filming of Quartet, the actor will finally take on directing for the big screen, it was announced by the BBC Films and other producers on September 12.

Oscar-winning Hoffman will adapt the stage play Quartet by Ronald Harwood, who also wrote the screenplay, and is best-known for his scripts of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and his Oscar winner The Pianist.

Hoffman assembled a venerable cast of British actors, including Dame Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon, both of Gosford Park and Harry Potter films, Tom Courtenay (Billy Liar, The Dresser) and Billy Connolly (Gulliver's Travels, Mrs. Brown).

The story about aging and mortality follows ex-opera stars living in a retirement home who gather each year to celebrate the birthday of Giuseppe Verdi. When an ex-diva arrives, old conflicts arise to jeopardize the annual concert.

Quartet began shooting this week in England for release in theaters in 2012.
