Brian Cox and Dougray Scott talk 'The Day of the Triffids'

Scottish actors Brian Cox and Dougray Scott play father and son in BBC1's update of The Day of the Triffids which airs on December 28 and 29 at 9pm. Both actors were interviewed on the set a few months ago and you can read part of their interview below:
Cox was brought up in Dundee, while Scott hails from Glenrothes. "Dougray and I have a great affinity – we come from places just a few miles away from each other," says Cox, 63. "I'm from North of the Tay, he's from South of the Tay. That part of Scotland is very interesting. It's cut off from the rest of the country, almost as though they've forgotten about it. When you come from somewhere like that, it instantly binds you.

"People brought up in that area are very dry and comical. Dougray absolutely has that – he has a great wit and a very gentle quality about him. My part of the world is very similar – and we hit it off immediately."

There was, according to Cox, only one bone of contention between him and his co-star. "Dougray plays golf, which to me is a good walk spoilt. I did once try to play, but the idea of trying to get a little ball into a tiny hole defeated me.

"We found a happy compromise when we were both invited to Gleneagles recently. Dougray played golf, and I discovered skeet shooting, which I loved. However, I have to reveal that I did see Ben Hogan win the Open at Carnoustie in 1953, so I still think I'm one up on Dougray."

Golf aside, the actors' evident bond made it much easier for the pair to play father and son in The Day Of The Triffids. "It's so helpful to have that rapport at once," continues Cox. "You have a shorthand right away. We share the same language. We even put a few 'ayes' into the script that were absent before.

...When we meet, Scott is taking a break from shooting a scene in post-apocalyptic north London. Bill has been holed up in a ruined pub near Lord's Cricket Ground and has been stumped by the scenes of mass devastation all around him.

Wearing a battered old leather jacket, dirty trousers and scuffed shoes, Scott has a livid red (prosthetic) scar down his temple from an earlier close encounter with a Triffid. He looks like a renegade from Mad Max.

"This drama has great resonance," says the 44-year-old actor. "It reflects the way things are going with the environment. People are now saying that we've reached a critical moment – that is certainly stated very clearly in An Inconvenient Truth," he says, referring to the film about Al Gore's climate change campaign. "Very soon the damage we have done will be irreversible. So we'd better sit up and take notice.

"In this drama, the Triffids' oil appears to have saved the human race from an energy crisis. But ironically, it also causes our destruction, because the Triffids have been genetically modified. Mother Nature is now working hand in hand with the Triffids to say, 'this is your punishment for screwing up the planet'."

"This drama is in many ways an ecological scream of despair, a reaction against the harm we've wreaked on the planet," chips in Cox. "Science is very simple – it's all about cause and effect. You reap what you sow." [Scotsman.com]

David Tennant's LA Times interview + on set photos from 'Rex Is Not Your Lawyer'

David Tennant talked to Robert Lloyd about Doctor Who and NBC pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer. An excerpt to his interview is below:

And yet in some strange quantum mechanical way, he is also already not the Doctor, having filmed his last scenes some months back. And even as he is and is not the Doctor, he is (possibly) becoming someone else, the eponymous star of an NBC pilot called "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer," in which he plays an attorney who coaches clients to represent themselves after he begins suffering panic attacks.

We spoke by telephone on a recent rainy day in Los Angeles. ("I can understand it's a novelty here," he said, "but I watched the news last night and it sounded like the world was coming to an end.") Of "Rex," which also features Jane Curtin and Jeffrey Tambor, he would only say, because "I don't know how much I'm allowed to say," that "it's a great part. It's a very dramatic role, it's quite funny -- you get to do a bit of everything and that always appeals."

...Tennant will likely next be seen on American television when "Great Performances" airs the film of his "Hamlet," which he performed at Stratford in 2008 with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has performed with the company over the years, including as Romeo in 2000, but this was his first performance after becoming a pop-cultural action figure.

"On the opening night in Stratford, when outside my dressing room window the BBC News 24 truck pulled up, I realized that if I failed at this it was going to be on a fairly international level," he said. But the Times called his performance "riveting throughout," and the Guardian praised his Hamlet's "quicksilver intelligence, mimetic vigor and wild humor" -- qualities that describe his Doctor as well. [L.A. Times]

Below are some more photos of David Tennant on the set of Rex Is Not Your Lawyer:

There's also a QI preview with David and Stephen Fry. David's episode airs on December 24 at 10pm on BBC One.

Dougray Scott cast in 'The Veil of Maya'

New trailer for 'The End of Time' + star in 'Burke and Hare' with David Tennant

Here's the new TV trailer for Doctor Who special, The End of Time, Part One:

The End of Time, Part One will air on BBC America on December 26 at 9pm ET/PT.

Okay, this is cutting it close, but there's still a little time to audition as an extra in Burk and Hare:
Thugs, footmen, dignitaries, doctors, and ladies of the night are being sought for a new comedy feature film about Edinburgh's famous grave-robbers-turned-murderers Burke and Hare. Universal Extras are holding auditions for the parts at the Tolbooth in Stirling on Thursday 17th December from 9am to 5pm (people can turn up any time on the day according to the announcement).

It is an exciting project considering that the film is being made by John Landis, the director behind comedy classics such as the Blues Brothers, Trading Places, An American Werewolf in London, and Animal House.

Among the stars lined up are Simon Pegg as William Burke, Bill Nighy, Dan Aykroyd, Minnie Driver and John Cleese.

Set in 19th Century Edinburgh, the black comedy follows the two miscreants as they get into the grave-robbery business after discovering a body in their house and realising that fresh corpses can yield a pretty penny when delivered promptly to Edinburgh's pioneering medical school.

When the two start cutting corners, killing to order instead of digging up stiffs from the graveyard like other "resurrectionists", they soon attract the attentions of the authorities.

With the law closing in, Hare persuades Burke that they should raise a last bit of cash to go straight and open a funeral parlour.

The open call for extras on the Universal Extras bulletin board states:

"Parts available in this truly full of laughter feature film will include you playing role(s) such as; Thugs, Students, Pub goers, Footmen, Dignitaries, Doctors, Market sellers, Ladies of the Night and many more! Payment per filming day will be around £80. The role you are selected for will determine what you will be paid and the amount of days you will be required for over February and March 2010." James McAvoy's 'Last Station' interview + new 'Last Station' clips

James McAvoy recently did an interview and talked about his role in The Last Station and working with actors Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, and Paul Giamatti. Both Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer were nominated for Golden Globes earlier today in the Best Actress, Drama and the Best Supporting Actor categories for The Last Station. You can mosey on over to Awards Daily for the full list of nominees.

An excerpt of the interview is below and you can read the full interview here.
Back Stage: You were speaking with Michael Hoffman about this film long ago. How did the role finally become yours?

James McAvoy
: There was a point when I wasn't certain the job was being offered to me—probably because nobody knew who I was. But he knew who I was, enough that he liked my work, I think. But the job still wasn't an offer. Anyway, he couldn't get the film made, and then by the time that it came back around, he could offer me the job.

Back Stage
: Do you know why he was interested in you in particular?

McAvoy
: I think he thought I was a good person at playing the lead role in something in which the lead character wasn't the focal point, and that was the case with "The Last King of Scotland"—playing that guy who carries you through the film, even though he's not the sort of über-figure in that film.

Back Stage: And you have a purity onscreen.

McAvoy: It's just something I think I've been able to do, that people have picked up on. And when you do something once, people kind of go, "Well, that's what you can do." It's a nice quality to portray, and I like that. But I can't lie: There will be a part of me that goes, "Ya, I want to play a bad guy; I want to play nasty people." And actually I've played quite a few egotistical people as well, and that's something that I'm quite interested in. Ego is something that I think is quite a fun thing to play. [Backstage via James McAvoy Message Board]

Some new clips with James from The Last Station are now online. I can't embed them so be sure to go here and here to watch them.

There's also a little bit of news on The Conspirator. The film, which has been shooting in Savannah since October, wraps today. Savannah is being used to substitute for 1860s Washington, D.C. The film centers on Mary Surratt's trial after she is accused of conspiring to kill President Lincoln.

Ewan McGregor's 'The Ghost' finds a U.S. distributor

Though it remains undetermined whether Roman Polanski will be coming to the United States, his latest film will be playing in this country. On Friday, Summit Entertainment, said it had acquired North American distribution rights for Mr. Polanski’s feature “The Ghost Writer.” The film, adapted from the Robert Harris novel “The Ghost,” tells the story of an author (played by Ewan McGregor) who agrees to help write the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan) and finds himself drawn into political and sexual intrigues. The film is directed by Mr. Polanski, who also wrote the screenplay with Mr. Harris.

In a statement, Summit said it planned to release the film during the first half of next year. Mr. Polanski fled the United States in 1978 after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. [NYTimes]
