Also at The Barbican there will be 10 seats for £5 at each performance for people aged between 16 and 25, plus 30 stalls tickets for only £10 for each performance which will go on sale at 10.30am at The Barbican each day. These day seats will be limited to one per person.

The Royal Shakespeare Company has confirmed that Thursday 12th December is the London Press Night for Richard II. The performance starts at 7pm that evening. The RSC has also confirmed that Wednesday 15th January is a rare London weekday matinee performance and not an understudy performance. Kevin McKidd: ebay auction in support of Save The Children

From WetPaint:

One of Kevin's most beloved charities is Save the Children, an organization devoted to — you guessed it! — helping children in need. He's supported the charity for years, and even donated the proceeds from his folk album to it.

Now, he's hosting a charity auction that his fans can take part in!

Now through Monday, February 25, you can bid on items ranging from message cards to keychains to photo frames on eBay. They're all hand crafted items from The Scrappy Tree, and each one is signed by Kevin himself. As of now, it looks like most items are in the $10-20 range.

The proceeds will go to Save the Children's international emergency response campaigns. According to Kevin's website, the funds will help "recovery and life saving support efforts involving USA Hurricane Sandy, Philippine flooding, South Sudan shelter aid, African food and hunger crises, and Haiti earthquake relief, to name a few."

James McAvoy: Macbeth reviews, and 'Neverwhere' cast photo

James McAvoy in Macbeth, Trafalgar Studios, review
Macbeth, starring James McAvoy, packs a powerful punch says Charles Spencer.
4 out of 5 stars
James McAvoy and Claire Foy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios
James McAvoy and Claire Foy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios. Photo: Johan Persson
James McAvoy, best known as a film actor, proves a commanding Macbeth, and the relationship with his wife is powerfully caught. The text makes it clear that the couple had a child who died in infancy and McAvoy and Claire Foy as Lady Macbeth suggest both an undertow of grief and the sense that their murderous ambition is some kind of sick compensation for their loss.
At the start it is Foy’s Lady Macbeth who leads the way, like a bossy schoolgirl who has set her heart on becoming head-girl. Unlike his morally blind wife, however, Macbeth knows what murder will cost, and initially at least, has a strong sense of what is right. McAvoy thrillingly suggests a man on the rack of his own guilty mind who learns that the only way to secure his position and silence his conscience is to become inured to atrocity with further killings.
He also does full justice to the haunting poetry of the last act in which Macbeth realises just what he has lost - not least himself and any sense of purpose or meaning in life. It is the reason that Macbeth is a genuinely tragic character and not just a serial killer.

From Hollywood Spy:
Hollywood Spy spotlight on spectacular new epic SF show "Defiance"
I am sure that you will agree with me that there aren't many science fiction series on the small screens, so we are looking forward to all new shows of that genre. Probably the only new sf show to premiere this Spring is DEFIANCE which is ready to start its television life April 15th over at SyFy channel in US and UK, and Showcase in Canada! The innovative serial drama from the minds behind "Battlestar Galactica" and "Farscape" will follow a mysterious man who, drifting through a terramorphed American landscape, settles in a border town where aliens and humans fight against the fragility of peace.

James Cosmo: interview at the Glasgow Film Festival

James Cosmo talks Citadel, Game of Thrones, his career and Scottish film
From STV:
James Cosmo has appeared in some of the country’s best known films including Braveheart, Trainspotting and Highlander, and received considerable acclaim throughout his career including a recent Scottish Bafta for Donkeys.

Speaking at the Glasgow Film Festival, where he had appeared to talk about his career, the 64-year-old Scottish actor revealed to STV about what he thinks set those films apart.
He said that Highlander director Russell Mulcahy had “brought something new to the business”, while having worked with Trainspotting director Danny Boyle on TV before he knew “the quality that Danny would bring to the game”.

Meanwhile Cosmo explained how Braveheart had come at exactly the right time for him, while he was going through a rough patch getting enough work to look after his wife and baby.

Of new film Citadel, an Irish/Scottish co-production by Bl!nder Films and Scotland’s Sigma Films, he spoke effusively about writer-director Ciaran Foy.
After revealing that he chose to work on Citadel because of its “terrific script”, of its claustrophobic nature he added: “It was great fun to do, really good – and by goodness it makes you jump.”

He has also appeared in two of the most acclaimed US TV shows of recent years – Sons of Anarchy and most recently in Game of Thrones, and explained to us how it was to work on those much loved series.

Billy Boyd and John Barrowman in a Dogs Trust advertisement

From Boyd-oh-Boyd:
Swingcats find purr-fect way to help out their canine friends
Scottish girl group enlist stars to help make video to raise money for The Dogs Trust.
A Scottish group called the Swingcats are raising cash for dogs.
All profits of the trio’s new single The One are being donated to The Dogs Trust.
And they persuaded dog-lovers John Barrowman, Lord of the Rings star Billy Boyd and Still Game’s Paul Riley to star in the video.
The song was inspired by singer Alyson Orr’s dog Angus, who died a month ago.
Alyson said: “Angus was a second-hand dog and I wanted to give something back. Many dogs need loving new homes – often after suffering terrible cruelty.”
Once the Swingcats – Alyson, Laura Ellis and Nicola Auld – had finished the song they pulled in some favours to make the video.
Alyson added: “I knew John was a big supporter of the Dogs Trust so when he was in Glasgow doing panto I asked if he’d be willing to help and he gave up his time in between shows.
“Billy is a friend of mine and I also wanted someone to play a traffic warden and asked Paul, who said yes.”

Ewan McGregor: Broadway aspirations, and 'Star Wars' ideas

Ewan McGregor eyeing Broadway debut

Scottish star Ewan McGregor is seriously considering a stint on the Broadway stage - and he'd love the project to be a musical.

The Star Wars actor showed off his singing skills in the movies Moulin Rouge! and Down With Love and he also hit the stage for a 2005 West End revival of hit show Guys and Dolls, in which he played Sky Masterson, and now he's got his sights set on making his New York debut.
McGregor was quizzed about his theatre aspirations during a question and answer session with fans via Twitter.com, during which he replied, "I'm considering options on Broadway... I'd love to do another musical. There's nothing quite like it on stage or in film."

'Star Wars' Spin-Offs: Ewan McGregor totally 'Up For' Obi-Wan movie
Prequel actor rolled with the 'good idea' by adding suggestions of his own.
Last week, when the possibility of "Star Wars" spin-offs and standalone films became a reality instead of nerdy conjecture, minds began racing to figure out which characters from the galaxy far, far away might get the call. There were rumors of a Boba Fett film and the adventures of young Han Solo, but Harrison Ford doesn't exactly fit into that black vest anymore.
Many of the actors from the prequel films, however, are thankfully still close enough in age to their characters to allow a standalone movie. And if we're comparing that list with yet uncovered portions the "Star Wars" mythos, Ewan McGregor certainly springs to mind, and, guess what, he's totally up for it.

MTV News sat down with McGregor and his "Jack the Giant Slayer" co-star Stanley Tucci during a press event for the new film, and the former Obi-Wan Kenobi shared his thoughts on a possible spin-off movie.
"I think it's a good idea," McGregor said of getting his own film. "The only bit that I could get away with doing is after the last one I made, 'Episode III,' before Alec Guinness, there's that period where he's in the desert."

Danny Boyle's 'Trance': James McAvoy Blows Minds, Literally...and Gorily — NSFW Trailer
James McAvoy in Trailer for Danny Boyle's 'Trance'
From Hollywood.com:
And now for something completely crazy: the trailer for Danny Boyle’s upcoming hypnotism/art-world thriller, Trance (in limited release April 5). The Slumdog Millionaire director seems to be creating a psychotic hybrid of Inception and The Thomas Crown Affair in which James McAvoy plays a sap who undergoes hypnosis by a scheming Rosario Dawson.
He’s either hypnotized into unwittingly helping Dawson and her fellow baddies steal a painting or he’s undergoing a second round of hypnosis to unpack and recover memories from a heist he’s already had purged from his consciousness. If you ask us, McAvoy’s cryptic response to whether he’s ever submitted to hypnosis before—“Uh, no, at least not that I can remember”—favors the latter interpretation. Either way, Boyle is abandoning his Slumdog and 127 Hours Oscar-bat schmaltz and heading back into nasty, gnarly Shallow Grave and Trainspotting territory. Blood spurts. Fingernails are ripped out. Nubile bodies are on display. And people can still talk even after having half their noggin blown off. (Be forewarned, that list image, occurring at the 1:12 is really grisly.)
Thought that Boyle couldn’t get any crazier than when he had a Mary Poppins army battle a giant, inflatable Voldemort at the Olympics Opening Ceremony last summer? Looks like he’s topped himself.

Check out this slightly NSFW (courtesy of the bloody mayhem) clip:

Tony Curran: 'Defiance' character photos and interviews

Defiance: Exclusive New Images
Check out new characters pics from the Syfy series.
As we get closer to the April 15th debut of Defiance, IGN has the exclusive debut of new character photos from the Syfy series.

Defiance takes place in a future where the arrival of seven alien races has changed society forever. In the wake of a great war, an uneasy peace has been found and Defiance centers on life in a town where humans and aliens coexist.

Defiance is part of an ambitious plan to launch a TV series and game simultaneously, with the game taking place in the same continuity. The game is set in San Francisco and the TV series in what was once St. Louis, MO, though at least a couple of the TV show characters will be seen in the game.

Defiance Character Photos Show Us The Humans And Aliens In Syfy's New Series
Coming up in April, Syfy's Defiance will premiere, along with the video game which will interconnect the world between two mediums, for those TV viewers who also also manage to find time to do a bit of gaming. And for those of us who prefer one over the other, we hear the series and video game will work independently enough so that you aren't required to follow one in order to follow the other. That's thinking a bit ahead though. For now, what we really have to look forward to is a sci-fi series on Syfy.

The character photos released for the series make it very clear that we're dealing with science fiction here. The drama is set on earth where humans now live with seven other unique alien races. They're all trying to get along and reform society in the transformed landscape. As you can see in the cast photo below, St. Louis, Missouri is the backdrop for Defiance's story - or the new version St. Louis, now known as Defiance.

‘Defiance’ Cast Photos Introduce Viewers To An Exciting New Sci-Fi World
Even though we’re still two months away from the premiere, it is already apparent that Syfy’s upcoming multiplatform series Defiance is the cable channel’s most ambitious project in years. Syfy has released a collection of character photos that introduce us to the series’ sprawling cast while also giving us a glimpse of the impressive amount of detail that has gone into constructing the futuristic world inhabited by humans and aliens alike.

Set on Earth after it has been ravaged, terraformed and colonized by seven alien races collectively known as Votans, Defiance focuses on the town formerly known as St. Louis and its inhabitants. The series is part of a larger world that also comprises a MMO video game that will also debut April, but viewers won’t have to play the game in order to understand the series.

Defiance premieres Monday, April 15th at 9/8c on Syfy

DEFIANCE Cast Photos
In April of 2013, Syfy will present a revolution in storytelling: Defiance, an epic drama that will unfold as both an original series and a multi-platform video game. An unprecedented collaboration between Syfy and Trion Worlds, “Defiance” is the first-ever convergence of television and online gaming, featuring an interconnected world between the two mediums as they evolve together into one overall story.

The series’ luminous cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Mia Kirshner.

Set in the near future, “Defiance” introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. Each week, viewers will follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, MO, while in the game, players will experience the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area.

The series is executive produced by Kevin Murphy (“Desperate Housewives,” “Caprica,” “Hellcats”), who also serves as showrunner, Michael Taylor (“Battlestar Galactica”) and Rockne O’Bannon (“Farscape”). Scott Stewart (“Legion,” “Priest”) directed the pilot; Michael Nankin will serve as supervising producer/director on the series. “Defiance” is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

Sneak Peek Syfy's upcoming action adventure TV series "Defiance" debuting April 15, 2013, starring Grant Bowler, Nicole Muñoz, Jessica Nichols, Julie Benz, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Stephanie Leonidas, Graham Greene, and Mia Kirshner:
"...aliens known collectively as 'Votans' have come to Earth seeking a new home after their solar system was destroyed. However, when they reached Earth, they discovered despite a prolonged negotiation with the government on Earth, they were not welcome. Rather than turn away, they began a war with the humans as they are determined to make Earth their new home.
"During the war, the Votans drop 'terraformers' on the planet, transforming the surface, scorching the earth, opening chasms in the ground and covering the surface of the planet in dust and debris.
"After decades of war, a ceasefire is declared when both sides realize they must focus on survival on this new almost alien planet.
"Jeb Nolan' was only ten years old when the Votans arrived and he served in the military during the war. With the war now over, he returns to his hometown of St Louis to find it’s is no longer the city he left; it is little more than refugee camp. Deciding his services are needed, Jeb takes up a position as the 'Chief Lawkeeper' so he can protect the town from dangerous clashes between humans, aliens, military scavengers and other dangerous visitors who occasionally enter the town..."

Cumming just helped intsall the marquee at the Barrymore Theatre and BroadwayWorld was there to chat with the leading man about the show. Check out what he had to say below!
Produced by Ken Davenport, The National Theatre of Scotland's Macbeth will play a strictly limited 73-performance engagement at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street).
A tour-de-force performance directed by Tony Award winner John Tiffany ("Once") and Andrew Goldberg ("Black Watch"), this Macbeth is set in a clinical room deep within a dark psychiatric unit. The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi will play Leonardo Da Vinci in a new 3D dramatised documentary based on the Italian's journals.

David Tennant: project news and upates

  • Richard II
"One less performance of Richard II for David Tennant?"

From David Tennant on Twitter:
Eagle-eyed Paksena on the GallifreyBase forum has spotted that the Richard II performance on Wednesday 13th November is no longer showing on the Royal Shakespeare Company website.

It has been removed in two places on the website including the ticket purchase link but there is nothing to say why or even whether there will be no performance on that day.

When the dates were first announced Monday 11th November was not listed so it now means that during the final week in Stratford-Upon-Avon there will be performances on Tuesday 12th, matinee and evening on Thursday 14th, Friday 15th and then matinee and evening on Saturday 15th. The production then moves to the Barbican Centre in London from 9th December.

One suggestion (and we stress that this is only a suggestion) is that POSSIBLY David Tennant could be involved in some promotion for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary on those two days. Nothing has been announced about David doing anything for the 50th on 23rd November but even so various media may wish to interview him.

Another alternative could be that on Monday 11th and / or Wednesday 13th November they will be playing a private or corporate performance which will not go on sale to the public.

This means that David Tennant is now playing 39 performances of Richard II. Tickets to Full RSC Members go on sale tomorrow online at 10am.

  • The Escape Artist
It seems that David Tennant has been reported a couple of times this week filming the BBC drama The Escape Artist in Surrey this week which may explain why there have been less sightings than if the production was filming in London.
Both of these reports only come from one person so are unsubstantiated but on Wednesday he was reported filming in Guildford and yesterday in a horse yard near Cranleigh in Surrey.
These dates have been added to the Known Filming Dates and Locations section of  The Escape Artist page on DavidTennantOnTwitter.com (which also includes David's prep word and costume fittings).

New clips of David Tennant in Broadchurch are shown in the new ITV trailer called Where Life Lives, It also includes the first chance to hear David Tennant using his own accent as this character.
ITV have published their press pack for Broadchurch. It includes an interview with David Tennant
A little tidbit about Broadchurch is that David Tennant uses his own Scottish accent in the drama. In the ITV press kit he says that he presumes his character comes from Glasgow.
David Tennant's interview from the Broadchurch ITV press pack has been reproduced on the blog.

Watch are to repeat Series Four of Doctor Who (starring David Tennant)

Series Four of Doctor Who will start being repeated on the satellite station Watch from Friday 15th February.

Starting on Tuesday 15th January Watch started a new run of repeats of David Tennant's episodes of Doctor Who following a repeat of Christopher Eccleston's series at the beginning of 2013.

Although there were 13 episodes in Series Two, Watch only showed 10 of the episodes on weekdays between Tuesday 15th and Monday 28th January. Due to the nature of the episodes Watch do not show Tooth & Claw, The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit during the day but instead reserve them for late night slots.

Watch started repeating series three on Tuesday 29th January and that series ends on Thursday 14th February.

Each episode is broadcast at 8am and again at 5pm plus it is repeated an hour later on Watch + 1.

Douglas Henshall: BBC Media interview ('Shetland')

Shetland: new crime drama for BBC one starring Douglas Henshall
As a curiosity it’s worth taking a look at Shetland and you’ll discover it’s a truly beautiful place. But, above all else, Shetland is a really good crime story.

Douglas Henshall plays Jimmy Perez

What kind of person is Perez?
In terms of his character, he’s not one of those haunted types with lots of problems, he’s actually a straightforward man who would just like a quiet life. Perez is a slightly idealistic guy who thinks Shetland is a safe haven - a nice, safe place to raise his daughter.
Why does he return to Shetland?
Essentially he moves back for his daughter. Cassie’s real father lives in Shetland and Perez wants her to be close to her dad because her mother has died. I think he’s got a slightly idealised view of Shetland - a place where people don’t lock their front doors.
What is Perez’s relationship with his police partner, Tosh, like?
I suppose Perez is something of a mentor towards Tosh. She’s bright and focused and together they have quite a quirky relationship where she’s very sharp and funny and Perez is the straight man, if you like. I think they rub along nicely together.
What attracted you to the role?
It's always such a cliché but it was simple – the script. If the script’s good it makes it interesting. I really like David Kane’s writing and I’ve worked with him before [This Year’s Love] so there was a draw there for me. And Ann Cleeves’ sense of Shetland is fantastic – the way she describes the location is incredible.
What makes the island location so unique to film a crime drama such as Shetland?
Shetland is such a unique place it’s impossible to double somewhere like that. The communities are quite spread out so when a murder happens in a location like Shetland it affects everyone. With that there’s an instant sense of tension because everyone will inevitably know who the murderer is. That immediately ratchets up the tension because you think “who can I trust?” Those little things make Shetland a unique location to set a crime drama.
What was it like filming in Shetland?
It’s such a beautiful place, so stark and unique – the sky is huge, the air is fresh, the sea is clear... it’s a lovely place. I’d never been before but I’d love to go back. Everyone worried about the weather but we really didn’t have it that bad – it was lovely actually.
Everybody was incredibly helpful and they honestly couldn’t do enough for us. Shetland was the biggest film production to ever be shot on the islands so I think everyone was really excited about us being there.
We didn’t leave any mess behind so hopefully they’d be happy for us to go back.
Was it good returning to Scotland to film Shetland?
Oh absolutely, yes. I don’t get the opportunity very often so it’s always nice to get back. Glasgow [where some of the Shetland shoot was filmed] is my home city and I’m always happy to go back whenever I can.
Any memorable filming experiences?
Well I got to go back to my hometown of Barrhead which was lovely. The old Health Centre where we shot the hospital scenes was where my mother worked as a district nurse so I knew the place. There were lots of ghosts walking around.
And the old council building which doubles as our police station was where my granddad worked so it was all very interesting. But also slightly surreal.
Are you a fan of crime dramas?
There’s such a proliferation of them but if they’re well done then I’ll watch. I can’t watch for the sake of it.
But I loved The Wire – it was fantastic – and I really liked The Killing and The Bridge and, years ago, Cracker. The thing about The Wire is you could have an hour-long episode and the only thing you’d discover is they’d find a phone number but it had power.
Talking of The Killing, Sarah Lund has her jumpers... what is Perez’s chosen attire?
Whatever’s functional for Perez, really. I was thinking about jumpers for my character but everyone around about me told me to avoid any kind of jumper. Sarah Lund has cornered the jumper market.
Why should viewers tune into Shetland?
I always thought of Shetland as being a place that was so remote it was always in a wee box during the weather. Sometimes I wonder if people really know where it is or what it’s like, what the people are like and what goes on there. As a curiosity it’s worth taking a look at Shetland and you’ll discover it’s a truly beautiful place. But, above all else, Shetland is a really good crime story.
What’s next for you work-wise?
I’m currently in 55 Days at Hampstead Theatre until the end of November which is a Howard Brenton play where I’m playing Oliver Cromwell.
And then who knows? Hopefully I’ll be going back to Shetland again for more of this drama...

David Hayman: 'Sawney: Flesh of Man' screening at GFF

David Hayman sinks his teeth into notorious Scots cannibal film role
Actor plays the title role in Sawney: Flesh of Man, a modern-day take on the depraved Scots cannibal Sawney Bean, and he admits the ancient tale has terrified and fascinated him since he was young.

The new film, Sawney, starring David Hayman
The new film, Sawney, starring David Hayman

He's spent a lifetime preparing for his most bloodthirsty role – and David Hayman could not wait to get tore in.
The award-winning actor plays the title role in Sawney: Flesh of Man, a modern-day take on the depraved Scots cannibal Sawney Bean.
In the film, Bean is a religious psychopath who captures, kills and devours his victims with the help of his insane, inbred family.
It is based on the story of 16th century monster Sawney Bean and his clan, who were said to have lived in a cave at Bennane Head in Ayrshire.
David told the Sunday Mail that the ancient tale is a gruesome story that has terrified and fascinated him since he was young.
He said: “When I was a wee boy, we used to spend our summer holidays down the Ayrshire coast in Girvan. My dad had told us the stories of Sawney Bean and about all the terrible things they had done.

“During the holidays, he would take me to the cave near Ballantrae where it was said the Bean clan lived.
“I remember it vividly. There was a skinny wee entrance and I was surprised how small it was. But when you were inside the cave, it was really scary. The memories from my childhood are really clear.”
So when the star of Trial and Retribution was asked if he would like to be in a modern-day film version of the story, there was no hesitation.
“I jumped at the chance,” said David. “It’s a low-budget film. There was no money and a very small film crew but I think they might have pulled off a major coup. It is gory, bloodthirsty and, I hope, funny as well.”
Others share David’s view because Sawney: Flesh of Man has landed an US distribution deal and there is already talk of making a film prequel, which would focus on the 16th century legend.

Sawney Bean was Scotland's ultimate bogeyman
Sawney Bean was Scotland's ultimate bogeyman
Tales of the Sawney Bean saga might have scared David witless when he was a boy but the actor reckons there is a very obvious reason why the tale of the Scots cannibal has fascinated folk over the centuries.
He said: “It is because it deals with one of the ultimate taboos of humanity … cannibalism.
“Just look at the scandal that has been created this week because it has been discovered that people have eaten horse meat when they thought it was beef.
“Now, that has created a national fuss, and I appreciate the health concerns, but really it is nothing compared with eating human flesh.
“For proof of that, you just need to look at 1972 when a plane crashed in the Andes and, in order to survive, people ate the flesh of those who had died.
“That is something many folk would do under those circumstances. I would have done it to stay alive.
“But because of what they did, the survivors still live with the stigma.”
David has known the Sawney Bean story for years and is fascinated by many aspects of it.
Among them is the claim that the Bean clan did most of their vile deeds in winter because food was more scarce then.
But he is well aware that nobody knows for sure if Sawney Bean and his clan even existed at all.
“Whether the legend of Sawney Bean is true or not, it is a great story,” David added. “It just shows that there is nothing like a legend.”
  • Sawney Bean: Flesh of Man will be screened at the Glasgow Film Festival on Friday, February 22.
