Foreign trailer for 'The Ugly Truth'

This trailer has been online for a few days. I thought it was funny, which is surprising because I'm not big on romantic comedies. Maybe its R rating has something to do with it:

Henry Ian Cusick talks about Darwin

After an 18-day shooting schedule, I, Darwin starring Henry Ian Cusick has just wrapped shooting. The made-for TV film is set in 1858, and Charles Darwin's voyage on the Beagle will be shown in flashbacks. Henry Ian Cusick discussed what it was like to play Darwin as a young man:

For Cusick, assuming the mantle of a man who changed the way we look at life on this planet is a much different task from running through the jungle and tripping through time on Lost, although he previously held the role of Darwin’s predecessor, pioneering 19th century palaeontologist Gideon Mantell, in National Geographic’s documentary The Dinosaur Hunters. His portrayal is a far cry from the common image of an aged Darwin, bald and heavily bearded, and confined to his home in Kent by a series of illnesses.

“We never think of Darwin as a young man, but imagine him doing the Beagle voyage around South America for five years; you’d have to be fit, strong, brave and adventurous to go to all of these places," says Cusick, looking pretty fit himself under starchy layers of Victorian finery. “It’s not like travelling now; you’d arrive in some remote place and not know how you would be greeted by the natives. You really had to have your wits about you, and when we think about Darwin, we don’t think of the adventurer or the brave man, we think of the intellectual.

“But he was a crack shot, a fantastic horseman, although when he came back to England he developed these illnesses. He might have picked up a parasite on his journeys, or perhaps it was stress-related because he had this answer to something that he really didn’t want to give to the world, until Wallace’s paper forced his hand." First TV spot for 'The Ugly Truth'

The TV spot has been airing on American TV for a few days and Trailer Addict now has it online:

So, James McAvoy might not be in 'Wanted 2' ?

Earlier this week Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov confirmed that he had started pre-production for Wanted 2 and had found a way to bring back Angelina Jolie's character, Fox. He didn't actually mention James McAvoy, but I assumed, like a few others that James was automatically doing a sequel. Mark Millar (the writer of the Wanted comic books) confirmed in September of 2008 that not only were there two sequels that were greenlit, but that James McAvoy had signed on for both sequels. But, Cinematical seems to think that McAvoy's return is even less likely than Angelina Jolie's:

Jolie might not be the only familiar face returning to the comic book flick, although it's not who you might think. Bekmabetov has already hinted that Kostya Khabenskiy could return as The Exterminator, and Terrence Stamp seems to think he'll be a part of the sequel as well. But the big question mark hanging over the film is still: "What about James McAvoy?" Well, I wouldn't hold your breath, because it looks like his return is even less likely than Jolie's. Bekmabetov doesn't even mention McAvoy in the interview, and the Scottish actor appears to be booked solid for the coming months. Although, if Bekmabetov is willing to bring people back from the dead, who knows what he might come up with to get McAvoy back in the picture.

I have no idea what to make of this, but I'll keep you posted.

David Tennant and John Barrowman will be at Comic-Con

BBC America sent out this press release earlier today. It's pretty long, but if you'll be attending Comic-Con this year, then check it out:

- BBC hosts Doctor Who talent for their first ever appearance at Comic-Con -

New York, NY – June 17, 2009 – In support of BBC AMERICA’s U.S. premiere of four Doctor Who Specials, the Doctor himself, David Tennant, will appear alongside writer/executive producer Russell T Davies at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego. They will take part in a Doctor Who panel along with executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn, Sunday July 26, 10:00-11:00am PT.

David will travel to Comic-Con, fresh from the Doctor Who set, having shot his final scenes as the tenth Time Lord. He and fellow panelists will discuss the latest incarnation of television’s longest running science fiction series and take questions from the floor. There will also be exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming specials.

Fans can visit the BBC AMERICA booth (#3629) to capture their own photograph alongside part of the Doctor Who set – as well as purchase exclusive merchandise including David Tennant figures.

Fans of BBC AMERICA’s highest rated show ever, Torchwood, which will have just completed the five-part special, Children of Earth, will get to chat with the stars and makers of the show first-hand. Just 48 hours after the last episode, the show makes a return visit to Comic-Con with a panel featuring star John Barrowman, writer/executive producer Russell T Davies, executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn, Sunday July 26, 2:15-3:45pm PT.

Cult comedy favorite and BAFTA-nominated, The Mighty Boosh, comes to Comic-Con for the first time to celebrate the airing of all three seasons on Adult Swim, and the BBC’s DVD release, just two days before the convention begins. Inspired by the Perrier Comedy Award-winning live comedy show, creators-stars Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding, along with actors Michael Fielding, Rich Fulcher and Dave Brown, will be on stage to discuss the magical, bizarre and exciting world of The Boosh, Friday, July 24, 4:45-5:45pm. The hit UK comedy series follows crazy zookeepers Howard Moon and Vince Noir and was described by The San Jose Mercury News as “an acid-trip fantasy-comedy [that] is seriously deranged and seriously funny.”

Key talent from both shows introduce the last episode of the five part series Torchwood: Children of Earth and a U.S. premiere viewing of Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead, the first of four specials starring David Tennant.

Underground Toys (#3949) will be selling their entire Doctor Who and Torchwood lines of toys and novelty items. In addition, this year they will once again introduce new limited edition Comic-Con action figures that have never been seen before.

'Grey's Anatomy' returns in September

Grey's Anatomy will return to ABC on Thursday, September 24 at 9pm in the US. For now, it's hard to tell what will happen to Kevin McKidd's character Owen. No one is entirely certain if Kevin McKidd actually has a contract yet for next year. Fellow cast member Jessica Capshaw may not have a contract yet either, and Chandra Wilson is actually waiting for her own offer to return to the show. My guess is that Kevin's contract will be renewed, it just seems sort of weird that these three actors are still waiting to get confirmation from ABC.

Sean Biggerstaff answers fan questions

Over at Sean Biggerstaff's official website fans can post questions and every once in a while Sean takes the time to answer them. Some new answers were posted today, and my favorite is a question about fellow Scottish actor James McAvoy:

Do you know James McAvoy?

I just read you interview with The Scotsman, Mon 12 Feb 2007, A rising Scottish star who is definitely not the new James McAvoy.

I didnt know who James Mc Avoy was, so I looked him up on-line. Among other things it mentioned that he worked as a baker during two years in Sainsbury. Did you meet him there?

Really, is he a fellow actor acquaintance?

Jim E. - San Antoni, TX, USA

Jim, No, I don't know Jamesand neither did I know he worked in Sainsbury's. I wonder if he's seen Cashback. I vaguely know his Sister, Joy, who is very nice from bumping into her around Glasgow (We used to live on the same bus route), but that's hardly relevant. Sean

You can head on over to Sean's website to see the rest of the questions and answers.

Craig Ferguson or Neil Patrick Harris to host the Emmys?

Last week, there was speculation that Emmy producer Dan Mischer was considering Craig Ferguson to host the Emmys in September. Now there's word that because Neil Patrick Harris did such a great job hosting the Tonys (he really did, he was adorable), he might also be considered to host the show on September 13. Since they both work for CBS, it's really hard to guess who Mischer will choose.

'The Details' gets shut down

James McAvoy had been scheduled to start shooting The Details in Seattle this summer, but the film has suddenly been shut down.

"They've run into some challenges," says Amy Lillard Dee, head of WashingtonFilmWorks, which provides financial incentives to movie-makers who agree to work in the state. This year, the state legislature increased those tax benefits, a move that Dee had credited with bringing The Details to Seattle.

Dee says the producers are "still fighting to get the movie made."

UPDATE: The film's executive producer, Jennifer Roth, sent me this statement: "The production of THE DETAILS is currently on hold due to unforeseen circumstances. We look forward to resuming business in Seattle shortly as this community is the perfect home for the movie." [Seattle Weekly]

I had really been looking forward to the film, and hopefully they manage to get enough funding to eventually make it.

Could Craig Ferguson host the Emmys?

Emmy producer Dan Mischer might be considering Craig Ferguson to host the show this year:

All the talk has been about Conan O'Brien taking over The Tonight Show and Jimmy Fallon taking over Late Night, but let's not forget Craig Ferguson over at CBS' Late Late Show. He might host the Emmys this year.

That's one of the changes being discussed by producer Dan Mischer. And let's be honest here: anything would be better than last year's horrifying hosting job done by the team of Ryan Seacrest, Jeff Probst, Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel. It was a train wreck from start to finish, with only one moment that was kinda funny (when they gave the award for Best Reality Host and dramatically went to a commercial before announcing the winner.

I like Ferguson (though I'm not a fan of his talk show) and he'd probably make for a good host. Of course, people like Stephen Colbert, David Letterman, and the casts of 30 Rock and The Office would be good too. CBS could go with someone from their network but they don't have to (and the network that hosts the award show usually doesn't). [TV Squad]

Ewan McGregor to star in Mike Mills' next film

The folks over at The Playlist point us to some news from recent interviews Ewan McGregor did to promote Angels and Demons. He will next appear in Mike Mills' newest film which will start shooting in October in Los Angeles. Here's a little more information on the film:

McGregor: I've been working with Polanski in Germany and Berlin for the last few months. I've had an amazing time. Very challenging and very long, tough days, but great. I'm just about to finish that film. I've got the summer off and then I go back to Scotland in August to do a film with my friend David Mackenzie who I did 'Young Adam' with. We're doing a second film up there. And then I'm making a film with Mike Mills in LA in October. So, I'm looking very much forward to that as well. [Hitfix]

Where it takes place, I know. I may well be doing one – the next two films I’m doing, I think, will be a story with David Mackenzie set in Glasgow, which is meant to be Glasgow. And then a story with Mike Mills in LA, which is meant to be in LA. I hope. I mean, you know, you never quite know until they give you the go-ahead. LA can very easily become New Mexico, or very easily become Vancouver, you know? Before you know it. But hopefully it’s going to be shot in LA. [Dark Horizons]
