Exclusive: new trailer for Irvine Welsh’s "Ecstasy"

When Danny Boyle delivered the groundbreaking Trainspotting, it proved that the unique language, tenor and prose of Scottish writer Irvine Welsh could be brought to the big screen with both style and substance. An adaptation of “The Acid House” soon followed and “Filth” is gearing up to shoot next year, and the next Welsh story to hit the big screen will be Ecstasy. But it was no easy journey.

The project has been in development for more than a decade, with financing coming and going before it was finally locked into place, with Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd, Adam Sinclair, Colin Mochrie and Dean McDermott coming on board to star. “Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy” follows Heather (Kreuk) and Lloyd (Sinclair) as they explore a chemical romance and discover whether their love for one another is real or not. Surrounding the story is a thriller that dives into the politics and lifestyles of the clubbers and gangsters, along with the good and the evil that comes with their world. The Playlist is premiering the brand new trailer for the film which you can see below, and we recently caught up with director Rob Heydon and author Irvine Welsh to talk about the project.

John Hannah to star in detective spoof

Sky1HD is making a feature-length detective spoof, A Touch of Cloth, starring Suranne Jones and John Hannah.

Co-written by Screenwipe's Charlie Brooker and Daniel Maier, it will star John as DCI Jack Cloth - a maverick, heavy drinking loner who has thrown himself into his work following the mysterious death of his wife. Cloth is teamed with plucky no-nonsense sidekick DC Anne Oldman, played by Suranne.

Together the pair investigate a series of increasingly grisly murders and find themselves on the trail of a devious killer. As you do if you’re a detective...

Sky1HD says the film will be a spoof of every British crime drama made in the last decade.

Co-writer Charlie Brooker said: “After you’ve seen A Touch of Cloth you’ll never be able to watch another detective show again. Not because it’s a devastating p***take, but because you’ll have smashed your TV to pieces in a disappointed fury."

There's no word yet on a broadcast date for A Touch of Cloth.

Gerard Butler is showcased in a new trailer for Machine Gun Preacher. His character finds a purpose in life after he tangles with a Sudanese warlord in an effort to prevent him from enlisting children in his army.

In other news, Gerard Butler may be circling submarine thriller Hunter Killer
Shortly after the trailer for his drug-dealer-turned-freedom-fighter drama Machine Gun Preacher reached the Web, we’re seeing a story that links the burly 300 star to another thriller that would cast Butler as the captain of some butt-kicking Navy SEALS.

The story would be Hunter Killer, the name given to an adaptation of Don Keith and George Wallace’s novel Firing Point, which has been optioned by producer Neil Moritz’s Original Films with a potential to be distributed by Relativity Media. Coming Soon posted the news that Butler’s name was being considered for the role of Joe Glass, the captain of a submarine who must lead a team behind enemy lines in Russia to stop an adversary from launching an all-out war against the United States. At least they’re not officially calling it a remake of Crimson Tide or The Hunt for Red October.

Fright Night premiere closes Empire’s BIG SCREEN weekend

Empire magazine’s BIG SCREEN weekend closed on Sunday with the premiere of Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night – a remake of the 1985 film starring Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale.

Star David Tennant attended the packed premiere at London’s O2 on the last night of a successful weekend of film and television related panels, Q&A’s and screenings.

In the film Tennant plans Peter Vincent, played by McDowall in the original, a Vegas entertainer and vampire expert.

When High school student Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) suspects neighbour Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell) is a vampire he turns to Vincent for help.

Speaking to seenit.co.uk ahead of the screening, Tennant told us: “there’s no attempt to what [McDowall] did, it’s a very different character. Probably of all the characters in the movie he’s the one that’s most repositioned.”
The former Doctor Who star said the new film “has some gruesome moments, some proper shocking, thrilling horror moments.”

CORIOLANUS trailer

In Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut, watch the UK trailer for CORIOLANUS starring Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave, James Nesbitt, Jessica Chastain and Brian Cox. The film showed In Competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.

As to CORIOLANUS’ Academy Awards hopes, Anne Thompson of indieWIRE recently wrote, “Vanessa Redgrave, as his Machiavellian mother Volumnia, could win the Oscar for best supporting actress. She is extraordinary as a naturally beautiful older woman who is powerful yet maternal, wicked yet loving, logical yet insane.”

Synopsis:

Caius Martius ‘Coriolanus’ (Ralph Fiennes), a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave) to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuses to support him, Coriolanus’s anger prompts a riot that culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler) to take his revenge on the city.

Based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy, The Weinstein Company will release the film in the U.S. on December 2, 2011.

Gerard Butler to star in FBI thriller 'The Bricklayer'

The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that Millennium Films has acquired the rights to The Bricklayer, the best-selling novel by former FBI agent Noah Boyd, and attached Gerard Butler to star as a rogue former agent who’s called in to help battle a criminal group that is demanding an escalating series of multi-million dollar ransom payments.

It’s the first project to be assembled by Mark Gill since he stepped into the role of Millenium president in June, and he’ll oversee it along with Boaz Davidson, head of development and creative affairs, and head of production John Thompson. Hanna Weg (Enigma) is adapting the novel for the screen. Butler, Alan Siegel and Danielle Robinson are producing, with Erik Lindsay and Weg serving as executive producers.

The Bricklayer was published by William Morrow in January, 2010. Boyd is actually a pseudonym used by former FBI agent Paul Lindsay. In the book, his main character, Steve Vail, is a former FBI agent, working as a Chicago bricklayer, whom the agency reaches out to help track down and combat the criminal gang. The plot also involves a female deputy director at the FBI who is assigned to work with Vail – a part that that has not yet been cast.

Pound of Flesh release on Blu-ray

Independent distributors Cult Epics have revealed that they are preparing a Blu-ray release of Tamar Simon Hoffs' Pound of Flesh (2010), starring Malcolm McDowell, Angus Macfadyen, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Timothy Bottoms, and Dee Wallace. Technical specs and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment, but the preliminary release date set by the distributors is November 15th.

Barden College's most revered professor, Noah Melville (Malcolm McDowell), meets his tragic downfall in the shoddy underworld where sex meets scholarship, in Tamar Simon Hoffs' dark comedic thriller.

Professor Melville teaches the most popular Shakespeare class at the idyllic college. His beautiful wife and daughter adore him, as do his students. Yet all is not as it seems. Between lectures, the professor runs an upscale escort service using gorgeous coeds whose steep tuition is financed through Melville's prestigious "Scholarship" program. Pillars of the community, faculty, and the school's wealthy chairman of the board, Cameron Morris (Timothy Bottoms), are among Melville's satisfied clients.

Charges of abuse of force have relegated hardened Detective Patrick Kelly (Angus Macfadyen) to a lowly desk job in Barden, where his only distraction is his feisty boss, Sergeant Rebecca Ferraro (Elizabeth Rodriguez). When an unidentified young woman's body is found near campus, Kelly intuitively suspects the cocky Professor in the crime. A late night alcohol driven brawl unexpectedly implicates Cameron.

Kelly and Ferraro's rough interrogation is stunted by the Chief of Police, who deems the case closed. Furious, Kelly relentlessly seeks justice for the dead girl, leading to Melville's arrest for pandering.

Tortured by the specter of a long prison sentence, the professor flees. Taking the law into his own hands, Kelly, driven by his own skeletons, is determined to track Melville down at any cost, even losing his job. The sensualist professor and the disgraced detective will meet and duel to a brutal conclusion filled with unexpected revelations.

David Tennant joins voice cast for new CBeebies animated series

Former Doctor Who star David Tennant is teaming up with another veteran of the time-travelling show for a new animated children's television programme.

Sophie Aldred, who played Ace alongside Sylvester McCoy as the seventh doctor, is going to be the voice behind Tree Fu Tom in the CBeebies series of the same name.

It follows the adventures of an eight-year-old boy who is transformed into a hero by putting on a magic belt. Tennant will play his sidekick, Twigs, in the show which follows the pair's adventures in a magic world called Treetopolis.

CBeebies controller Kay Benbow said: "We have a fantastic cast on this show who work brilliantly as a team. Their rapport permeates through to the programme reflecting the characters as a group of friends working together.
"We are delighted to have David on board as part of the team. The physical energy in his performance works so well for animation and his sense of fun and cheeky humour will delight the older CBeebies audience.
"We have many incredibly talented actors on CBeebies - in shows and the Bedtime Hour - because the very young deserve the very best. It's about seeking out great performances and offering the best possible quality to our viewers."

Doctor Who's David Tennant Celebrated on DVD

David Tennant is about to feel the love.
The man voted as our personal favorite Doctor of all-time will receive this wonderful box set in his honor, containing every episode starring Tennant as the Tenth Doctor -- allons-y! It's truly hard to crack what makes the Tenth Doctor so iconic, but one of the many reasons we loved him is his ability convey all emotions, to go from wise-crackin' and enthusiastic to richly dark and completely sinister on a whim. Now you can experience every adventure the Tenth Doctor had with this box set.
Titled Doctor Who: The David Tennant Years, the box set will contain Series 2, Series 3, Series 4, The Complete Specials and even the two animated endeavors, The Infinite Quest and Dreamland, just to prolong your love affair of Tennant, a true fanboy to the series who brings as much passion to the lore as an actor as he does a viewer to the benefit of everybody.

Warner Home Video and the BBC will be bringing this one out exclusively on DVD come October 11, 2011, leaving those clamoring for a Blu-ray release someday a little sad. The mega set will contain 26 discs that are holstered inside of a spiffy collector's book, and should contain all of the special features from the prior releases. No word was mentioned on our promotional flyer regarding new special features, but the price is set at the MSRP of $199.98.

We hope to have images of the box, the book it comes in, and all sorts of packaging very soon. Stay tuned to IGN DVD for more information about this and other upcoming releases!

James McAvoy and Alan Cumming join the cast of Filth

The lead character of Irvine Welsh's Filth sounds like a dream job for any actor. Bruce Robertson is a Scottish cop and misanthrope who is addicted to sex and drugs and would rather spend his days pranking his fellow police offers than doing his job. It's nothing you wouldn't expect from the author of Trainspotting, but what performer wouldn't want to try their hand at playing someone like that? In that sense, James McAvoy has just won the lottery.

The Playlist has received confirmation from Welsh himself that casting has begun for an adaptation of Filth, and McAvoy has landed the lead role. What's more, Jamie Bell and Alan Cumming have both come on-board as well, starring as Ray Lennox (Robertson's partner) and Chief Inspector Bob Toal (Roberton's boss), respectively. The project is being directed by Jon S. Baird, who only has one feature credit to his name, but it impressed Welsh to the point that he knew he wanted the filmmaker on board. "Jon did a biopic of Cass Pennant, a film called Cass, which was well received in the U.K," Welsh said. "It was compared favourably by some of the critics to This Is England. It was the same kind of style and really kind of a beautiful little film."

Baird as also done a rewrite on the script, which Welsh called "absolutely brilliant." The project is scheduled to start production in January 2012. Given the three actors that have already been wrangled, this could definitely turn out to be a project to look out for.

Doctor Who's Karen Gillan gets her own Rom-Com

Doctor Who is currently in its sixth season on BBC (and on BBC America in the States) and it’s the best show on television you probably aren’t watching. Acclaimed though the last few incarnations of the series have been, somehow that hasn’t really translated into much mainstream success for most of the cast. Maybe that’ll change when the tenth doctor David Tennant rocks your socks off as Peter Vincent in Fright Night, or maybe it’ll change when the eleventh Doctor’s companion becomes a rom-com star.

Karen Gillan, who currently stars on Doctor Who as the fiery, adventurous Amy Pond opposite Matt Smith’s eleventh Doctor, has just landed a role in a Scottish comedy called Not Another Happy Ending. Screen Daily says Gillan would play a “beautiful but eccentric writer of miserable, but best selling fiction”. One problem, now that she’s successful she’s not feeling so miserable, and her newfound happiness is giving her writer’s block. Her publisher played by Emun Elliott, then sets out to make her life miserable to get her writing again. It’s a rom-com, so yeah, along the way he falls in love. Who can blame him? It’s Karen Gillan.

Not Another Happy Ending is an indie production written by David Solomoms and being produced by Synchronicity Films. Translation: You’ll probably have to put some legwork in if you want to see it. It’s not likely to show up at your local megaplex any time soon. But if you’re a Doctor Who fan (and if you’re not, get working on that), you know that Gillan’s worth the effort.
